Today’s Session 2-26-21. too busy to get FO video

GOALS:

  1. BACKSWING: Internal rotation of trail hip
  2. DOWNSWING: Hand-path = down

7i Swing: full speed

GOAL 2: Hand-path = down

  • Most swings were at slower speed and often overdone
  • Started having more success at higher speeds feeling as if right elbow straightens from P4-P6

Today’s Session 2-28-21

Goals:

  1. BACKSWING: Wide takeaway, internal rotation of trail hip
  2. DOWNSWING: Hand-path = down from P4-P6 (main priority)

I had success last session with goal 2 with the feeling of extending trail elbow in downswing.

7i Swing -very full speed, like gave it extra

I found much success with a fake rhyme. “Swing it wide, sweet spot behind”

1728DEF6-BD98-41DE-9A60-90F6CCBD140B.jpeg.69f9370bb0740fb04f4b35bae8c9e3ad.jpeg

FWIW: Sweet spot of club feels like it’s in the circle. Very far behind me.

I think this is pretty good for downswing goal. Prob the best it’s been at full speed.

Again, most swings were still slow or drills.

Yesterday’s Session 3-11-21

Really good session

GOALS:

  1. BACKSWING: Hinge wrists during takeaway. Trail hip stuff, turn rib cage “up” from P3-P4
  2. TRANSITION: Hand-path = down
  3. Impact: Less wrist roll, turn chest through

7i Swings

Drill (pause at P4)

7i Swings (reasonable speed)

Goal 1: Backswing

  • Wrist Hinge

1B9D8E5C-2716-4D77-BCA0-02CCD905DB1A.jpeg.d590e0572a8b1dfb2e1d4f92bb8ad5b5.jpeg

The clubface was getting way to open at  P2. This looks better

  • Trail Hip

773B52B5-BDC7-4964-BD09-3533988AF920.jpeg.537c2ab712bc4cb180ceacabc1c8be64.jpeg

Internal rotation of trail hip looks decent. Leg and knee is facing FO camera.

GOAL 2: Transition (Hand-path = down)

83672649-BEDB-4388-B5E0-38D5E7373411.jpeg.340c8301f4f14f465ad351f33eb833c3.jpeg

  • It’s getting there. I must feel like the sweet spot is super far behind me. If I think “drop hands or arms” -I don’t have success
  • I would like club to be more upright at P4, but I must ingrain this first

GOAL 3: Less wrist roll at impact (drill swings, good speed tho)

3E76100A-13E3-45DF-91F3-3FE3356692D8.jpeg.6ad5f75adefbf8a845900d911f143f3b.jpeg

  • Perfect drill (one in a row)
  • If I do this release without getting the club deep at P5...  I will shank it.
  • Extra incentive to get the club deep is good... but punishment is severe. I don’t want to be shanking it on the course. Will train very hard on this.

Today’s Session 3-15-21

Continued to work on staying deep and not flipping my wrists.

Also added working on my distance wedges.

  • weight stays forward at 60/40
  • shallow the club at end of backswing

Wedge swings to P3

The first few times I tried this technique I was coming way over the top...so I tried to shallow the club with my hands at end of backswing

  • This seems too flippy?

  • not sure why I need to flip from here... this seems ok

Has anyone ran into this issue before? I’m a little new to hitting half wedges like this.

For a distance wedge? A bit. Keep the chest going.

Today’s Session 3-16-21

Continued full swing work and drills. The thought of turning my chest through really helped my pivot. (I lost it just a bit the last couple days during drills)

Distance Wedges

  1. Weight forward without leaning upper body
  2. Shallow at end of backswing with wrists
  3. Turn chest through - to not flip
  4. Worry about the rest later

”P3 Swings”

Better than yesterday. Thanks for the tip to keep the chest going!

Will work on getting a wider, better turn with these for next time.

Yesterday’s Session 3-25-21

My priority has been: hand-path = down from P4-P6

I got into some bad habits in my backswing (long, flat, bad trail leg) and have spent the last week getting that back under control.

7i Swings at speed

P4

E1F3425B-94ED-4C48-9CB4-83E935928E41.jpeg.fd859bf5af8a03f71e34a109e3a18509.jpeg

  • Backswing length looks better
  • Probably the best my trail hip piece has looked / worked at speed

Couple “problems” (not so bad)

  • Did not flow forward at P4 (or ever)
  • Still a tad steep coming down. Not in love with handpath from P4-P5

Backswing looked better again, was able to spend the 2nd half of session working on handpath from P4-P6

60% Speed 7i

Wish my muscle memory would work faster on this, but it’s coming along. Trying to work at the “edge of success” on this.

Good session

Golf Lesson 3-28-21

1st issue: Duck hooks with big clubs

B0481156-BAAA-4636-8467-90BD029CD87B.jpeg.e1ee5bd8f2073341d342efff5239b3d8.jpeg

I was doing some weird things while setting my wrists and with my forearms after P2.

Trail wrist was folding back on itself

  • Must hinge wrists up
  • Must have extension in trail wrist after P2
  • forearms go “up”

Ive also been practicing a feel with my trail arm.

  • It feels like turning a steering wheel (right hand on 2pm) to the left.
  • I do this feel at/after P2

39214213-60CF-4AE2-9C9B-6AC85708BC89.jpeg.12ad85cef61337f6750ca1eb4d83ded9.jpeg

Downswing with driver:

  • Cast in direction of green arrow, adding loft until impact

2nd Issue: Problems loading in the backswing

EB6D64BD-EF2E-4376-8E5C-D5F07020AA62.jpeg.82c39423f0882f2f58e307a3290bffe9.jpeg

My head was moving toward the ball and trail heel was lifting up (prob to counterbalance)

This is how I was “loading or crunching” into my trail leg/ hip.

How to load better in the. backswing:

  • Smash trail heel into ground while keeping the trail thigh facing straightish
  • feels like head moves back (P2), then up and forward (P3-P4)

Today’s Session 4-2-21 —first real session after lesson (that isn’t mapping in the mirror)

GOALS:

  1. Check to see how im loading into trail leg (like in lesson above)
  2. Check wrists and arms to make sure club isn’t too closed (duck hook part of lesson above)

Swing after mapping in the mirror for a week. Not expecting the world- just want to see what we’re dealing with

F205EED9-8BA2-46DC-8848-15390FA5D0DC.jpeg.6fb582af0f2a57c43d73f67e648a2967.jpeg

  • The duck hook fix looks great! Forearms up, face not closed. Good
  • 8i Swing is a tad long lol. The odd part is that: when I normally swing too long- the trail leg is spinning around and not keeping flex. Trail leg looks okay. Odd?
  • Swinging wide especially to P2 also helps when I’m overswinging, will try that.

After that I narrowed my focus to:

  • Trail heel slams and stays slammed into ground. (While keeping trial leg, hip stuff)
  • Don’t let head go towards ball
  • Swing wide to P2

I spent most of my session doing this (felt like a P2 drill). It was harder than I thought to keep my trail heel from lifting up while loading.

First session after a lesson is always the hardest, not bad.

Slim pivot,

All those things you are working on are fine , but just for your knowledge the human brain can only sort out, prepare and preprogram one thought in the 2/10 seconds allowed for the DS . So- you have to determine which part of the body will be responsible for CONTROLLING that one thing. That will be the only part if the human body that is connected / attached to the implement designed to do the job- the most dominant part of the body - the hands ! Not to hit with ,  it to control the movement!

Today’s Session 4-5-21

This will be the last long post. I wanted to put context of what I’m trying and why in case I get lost.

GOALS:

  1. Smash trail heel into ground and do not let it rise up in backswing.
  2. Work on Head stuff. (Basically don’t let it go “down and forward” in backswing)
  3. Keep working on integrating backswing with new move. I’ll post more on this below.

Some “issues” that I’m working through / figuring out.

FIRST

Below are older images of P2-P4 where my head was going down + forward and trail heel was lifting up

503BB13A-7DE7-4746-8ACF-663F5CA9A070.jpeg.71eddf897ae96d383c8fd248625cfd63.jpeg
I used that combination of moves to “cheat” and get the club and shoulders to pitch steep enough on the backswing.

SECOND

Below are a couple “problems” that I’ve run into trying the new moves. These are images from prior sessions.

I used to avoid these positions by the “cheating counterbalance” mentioned above

EEE135BC-DC81-4382-9531-40C7A044AD1A.jpeg.7af7f95d9aed7ec7c22104ed4c2efc5b.jpeg

Club really sucking to inside. No explanation needed.

5B122482-97CF-4225-A220-7C4907A170FD.jpeg.74d37408b48ea3b6371a12c601bc8237.jpeg

8i way too long. I just worked all winter on shortening my swing. I refuse to immediately start swinging this long again with an 8i.

TODAYS SWINGS 7i

HEAD MOVEMENT

  • looks ok to P2
  • not good enough at P4 (forward is worse than down)

CB8756B4-C179-4AB8-92DB-FF1CEACDE999.jpeg.74aa05ab8386c84e4657f2d8ab3eefba.jpeg

  • head can flow back to P2- ok

The good:

  • the head an heel were successful to P2
  • Swing was not too long

Ill keep working in the mirror so I can figure out what moves / feels to make.

Slim- pivot,

If the goal is to pull the clubface into the inside quadrant of the ball ( and it is )wouldn’t it make sense to cock your head back to the right to allow your eyes to direct the clubface in that desired part of the ball ? Kinda like the great Jack Nicklaus and many other greats.
Wouldn’t rotating your head back slightly also make it easier to rotate your shoulders more fluidly under your chin during  the BS ? It is not necessary to keep the head perfectly still . Moving the head slightly back allows more freedom of movement!

I mean, maybe?  But the problem isn’t that it’s rotating from side to side.

The problem is that my head is going down and forward in the backswing while my trail heel lifts.

The issue is explained with pictures in the previous swing post.

Yesterday’s Session 4-21-21

I went on a 7 day golf trip where I had the duck hooks pretty bad with big clubs. I just didn’t have enough days to change the pattern before we left.

But I got around ok while doing weird swings with the driver - but i kept it between the hazards / tree line.

So I wanted to see where my swing is at and really get the most recent lesson cemented in.

GOALS:

  1. Get the club (more) open at the top. Slight cup in wrist would be great.
  2. Check head movement
  3. Keep trail heel down. Flow back into trail leg

7i Swing. The indoor range was full (due to snow) so I only got DTL.

Goal 1: Club face more open

704E7D53-D122-4147-8148-3758B335959C.jpeg.3ef5464221d14017f255cdf1fab1ab58.jpeg

This is much better. From here I feel like I can actually shut the face in the downswing.

Goal 2: Head movement

511517F9-D173-4198-B91E-4747DD96B6F1.jpeg.8a5a7cbb6c5953ff17436022e0e0869d.jpeg

  • Kind of bummed on this one, I thought I was doing really good before I drew the circles!
  • Head is moving down and forward. Maybe it’s less than before...but not good enough.
  • It’s only the first session after a lot of play. Hopefully next time is a bit better.

Goal 3: Trail heel stays down while flowing into trail leg

BEE7E638-D5BC-4307-8A45-692ED7679F7F.jpeg.57e78c6d8b821c4d041566ef2e82cea4.jpeg

  • My heel was cut off in all the videos...I’ll get better videos next time.
  • Trail leg looks good (internal rotation stuff), maybe the best it’s been
  • I think I had success flowing Again, need FO video to be sure.

@Lane Holt, the issue is often not any "rotation" of his head.

@Slim_Pivot can look up your history here and is a smart enough guy to know to avoid your "facts."

P.S. The goal is not to access the "inside quadrant" of the golf ball. We hit pretty much the back of the golf ball, and relative to the target line, Jack Nicklaus typically hit the outside-back quadrant of the golf ball by a degree or two.

Today’s Session 4-22-21

GOALS:

  1. More cup in wrist during backswing
  2. Trail heel stays planted in the backswing while flowing into a steady trail leg
  3. Keep head from moving down and straight ahead (toward a FO camera)

7i Swings

Goal 1: More cup in wrist, club face more open at P4

C64D5E8E-6294-4D83-A3F0-9CAE7751428A.jpeg.3b2bb9078f116702c3d9158c11736c0b.jpeg

Pretty good, could be a tad more open? I just have to integrate the pattern to stop the duck hooks

Goal 2: Trail heel stays planted during backswing. Flow into steady trail leg

66EB1418-3DE7-4281-AB42-A9E02509932F.jpeg.3eb64d6ce94ae4d7b8169c9aa4390375.jpeg

  • trail heel looks to be planted throughout swing (DTL vid)
  •  Trail hip did not flow back enough
  • Trail leg is nice and steady though

Goal 3: Head not moving down and straight ahead

04CA4732-6B41-45DE-AAEB-7FF47492D0D0.jpeg.9b66ca6cc77ea8a4fd32c5b149148c8a.jpeg

  • looks pretty good at P2!
  • head did not move down!
  • but...it did move straight ahead (toward FO camera)

I think I’m making progress, I’ll just keep at it.
