I think it would be crazy of Justin NOT to switch considering the deal that Steinberg will get for Justin.  Money talks.

Those deals pale in comparison to what they can earn on the golf course.

History is littered with guys who switched equipment companies and struggled afterward.

I would be shocked if he hasn't already had the new clubs fitted for him and if he hasn't already played with them and found them to be as good as the clubs he now plays with.  Do you think he would be that foolish?

Did I say anything like that?

What I said remains true: history is littered with players who have switched equipment companies and seen their games drop off the cliff.

I think it was implied in your statement.  Keep in mind that players (by the scores) drop off the cliff without changing clubs.  I am betting that the new clubs will give him the same exact feel that he has with his present clubs.  These people aren't stupid.

It was not.

Not really true. McIlroy, DJ, Koepka, Rose… etc. are all pretty consistently in the top ten in the OWGR.

And yet… "history is littered with players who have switched equipment companies and seen their games drop off the cliff."

Look at Bubba Watson switching to Volvik only a few years ago.

C'mon, man, you're making assumptions AND ignoring history.

Did you forget something?

No.

Hell, the article you cited talks about how Rory's transition to Nike came with more than a few speed bumps.

I'm not saying Justin Rose is going to have any issues, but he just won $10M playing TaylorMade equipment, and Honma isn't exactly widely used among the PGA Tour's best.

My point is your point!  Rory changed clubs, made a lot more money doing so, and is still one of the top players in the world.  So that's why I don't think Justin Rose has much to worry about.  To your point:  This is the first time I've heard of Honma clubs.

He struggled in his switch to Nike.

Fair enough.  He struggled for a while and then got used to them.  Spieth DIDN'T change clubs and he didn't even make East Lake.  That's golf.  Look at Hunter Mahan.  Did he change clubs?

Whoever heard of Honda when they first came out?

I never argued the opposite. I give up.

Hunter got married and distracted. Said it himself.

Spieth had a down year.

None of that changes what I’ve said.

I’m done.

Do you think it was money based or spite based. He didn't seem to get the same treatment as tiger and Dustin.  I mean tiger and Dustin both have prototypes named for them. This is just speculation/ guessing on my part.  The Honma irons do look nice though.

    • While I think Phil should not be playing because of all the reasons stated.  He is endorsing by his mere presence a government that has numerous instances of human rights violations.  As an elder statesman, so to speak, and future a HOF member of the PGA his presence does provide validation to the tournament. But he could have handled it so much better to avoid some of the flack he is getting. He could have used the same turning 50 logic and that he doesn't expect to have an opportunity to play the tournament again, (whether a true statement of not).  But the real response to put things into perspective would be to say... "Unlike the military weapons that have been sold to Saudi Arabia for decades, the products I use can't be used to kill Americans." I spent 30 years in the defense industry and it is pretty amazing what products are sold to foreign countries.  The products are not the latest products, or upgraded version, and lack sensitive USG capability, but they none-the-less they represent some of the best that America has made.  Unfortunately, allies can become enemies is short order.  None of this is directed to a specific administration, party, or to be interpreted as political in nature.  It has been done for years. What is the most amazing part of a Foreign Military Sale is that a branch of the service, say the Air Force, will negotiate a contract with a defense contractor using DOD acquisition regulations to the benefit of the foreign entity.  I was never able to get my head around hearing an Air Force officer tell Americans working for an American company that his job was looking out for the interests of the country of (insert name of country).  It was utterly mind boggling. So, while I agree Phil should not play, hitting a golf ball seems to pale in comparison. John
    • Probably a PhD in comparative women's studies and Social Environmental Hysteria from a California college. Fill them with scotch and we are talking.  I need a ball retrieval tool, a clean rag, a drill and a straw.
    • I agree.. OSU can not grant Clemson a 21 point lead. Though, I think OSU is equipped to make it close if they do. The number of times they go on a 21 point streak in a short amount of time is still amazing to me. It's been like clockwork. OSU feels out what the other team does for about 3 drives and then just steps on the gas on offense and defense. I am not sure that I would take the Wisconsin game as what this team is though. You have a team motivated for revenge, they worked on all the deficiencies that Illinois and OSU exposed on them, and they threw the kitchen sink at OSU. You have OSU's #1 DB go out and things start to get exposed a bit. Who would have thought that Wisconsin's QB would pull the ball and run it. Great adjustment there for Wisconsin. It gave them a lead at the half, but then OSU held them to 80 yards for the rest of the game (excluding the last drive in garbage time)  Still, OSU needs to match Clemson drive for drive if they come firing right out of the gate. Kinda like how OSU kept up with Michigan and pulled away.
    • All good points. But the lurking issue for me is how OSU performed for more than half the game against Wisconsin. You give Clemson a 21pt start...you’re done. OSU a great 3-4th quarter team but that sluggish start won’t fair well with any of the top four teams. I think (hope) it’s a dogfight. I’m not too hopeful how OU will do against LSU. Zero discipline and an iffy defense isn’t what you want against LSU.
