Overrated/Underrated #16: PGA Tour Player Opinions on the Rules

In other words, how much attention we (or the media, or the ruling bodies) give their opinion.

Overrated, the complaining about the unfairness of the rules applying to them is idiotic.

Overrated...by a good bit actually. It almost never fails that when a rule affects a prominent player, a player in contention, or results in a DQ of someone that a few players will moan about how the rule needs to be changed. I have never understood how just because a rule effects someone in a negative manner that in some way it must be a bad rule.

They are entitled to their opinions on the rules, just like everyone else, but it doesn't mean that rule changes should be strongly considered just because a pro doesn't like it.

Overrated.  The PGA Tour is, for lack of a better word, a union whose membership and leadership advocates what's best for its members without any thought about what's best for the game of golf.  So you almost always hear tour players advocate what's best for them, not what's best for golf.

Overrated. Give them all a rules exam, post their scores and I’ll see if my opinion changes. What I do think is worth paying attention to is what tour player’s opinions are regarding what ‘punishment’ is appropriate for issues like Garcia’s for example. A clear understanding of the rules should be present before an opinion holds much weight. Imo.

Overrated.  Some of them don't even know the rules, so why should those opinions be given any weight? They push for getting rid of "unfair" rules and making play faster but scoff at the idea that their own pace is slow and at situations that negatively effect them.  Oh, that's right they play for a living and for millions of dollars... as if that is supposed to exempt them from certain rules they don't like.

Ok, yeah they play a ton of golf and are good examples of how the rules guide play, so the USGA R&A make decisions based on situations that arise on Tour. This is different, though, than the ruling bodies or media giving attention to their opinions on those situations.

Overrated as far as the general carping by Tour members.  When there are, however, highly publicized situations that seem contrary to the spirit of the game, the ruling bodies do react. Some of the Rules changes for 2019 seem to have their origin as a result of publicity from a Rules snafu on one of the pro tours.

Nice. Is there prize money for the winner of the rules exam? Does he get FedEx points?😁

Way overrated. PGA Tour players are experts at getting the ball in the hole in as few strokes as possible. They are not experts on almost anything else, and we shouldn't treat them as such. Half of PGA Tour players call in a rules official when they need to take a simple drop from a cart path.

I personally don't spend any time on it.

In general - Overrated, when i see them calling the officials over for even simple things, it leads me to think they aren't really experts at all.  I think it would be more worthwhile if we got to hear the opinions from really good caddies.  I respect players for their commitment and talent.

But I think the media does it just to fill in time and lend some false credibilty to it.

all that said, I suspect the worst tour pro knows the rules 1000x better than I do.....but he should.  However, I consider a pro should know them 10000x better than I do.

They don’t but they definitely should. If I don’t know and apply the rules pertaining to my job then I will probably get fired/go to jail/get sued.....

100% Overrated

The rules are made by the USGA and R&A with input from groups like the PGA and PGA Tour, but the players themselves have opinions that are no more important than the opinions of you and I.

Claims of a rule being unfair are pretty ludicrous when you consider everyone is playing under the same set of rules. Unless the rules state something like "unless you carry the ball 300 yards, take a 2 stroke penalty" there's nothing about them that will affect one player more than another in any significant fashion.

I don't pay much attention to them in most cases. I usually chalk it up to unenlightened self interest.

I know the situation you're speaking of, and in that case I do think the officials decision was precipitous.

Seriously overrated. But who's going to read what Dave from Virginia says, or even someone as knowledgeable as Erik from Erie, when they can read what the one-time #1 Golfer in the World thinks.  Media is all about viewers (or readers), not necessarily about accuracy or knowledge.  This issue isn't totally dissimilar from the idea of taking political advice from movie stars.  People would rather hear from Brad Pitt than from Dave in Virginia.

I think there is a dichotomy IMO.

Overrated, for people who know and understand rules. They know the Tour players whine about rules like most people whine about paying taxes.

Underrated, for general masses who consider many golf rules 'unfair' at face value and think all PGA Tour players have a doctorate degree in rules. Many of these are people who think Lexi is a victim.

Overrated/Underrated #17: Getting Custom Fit for a Putter.

I know we did the overrated/underrated custom fitting already. But this time I am specifically interested in putter fitting. I'm considering going through a putter fitting, but can't quite bring myself to commit yet. I know @Saevel25 got custom fit for his putter, so I'd be interested in his opinion. I know @iacas does custom putter fittings. What do the rest of you think? BTW - If this topic is too close the other custom fitting topic feel free to boot it.

My bag is an ever-changing combination of clubs.

A mix I am forever tinkering with.

    • Makes sense.  Like I said, I wouldn't have been upset at their original offer either, and based on the fine print it seems like they've held up their end of the deal.
    • If you've only had to adjust retroactively one time in 8 years and have around 5 people each year without handicaps, that's like 40-50 people total so it sounds like you're doing a pretty good job. I think your questions give enough to go off of. This might be a good way to get new people to actually post a few scores during the 6 weeks leading into the first event. Something like "New members will be eligible for tournament money once they have at least 3 posted rounds in GHIN" or something like that. If they can get 3 rounds in prior to their first event, then they're eligible. If not, they'll soon become eligible after an event or two assuming they play a little bit outside of events.
    • This is a loooooong winded narrative so if you don't like long stories, move on. 😉 Our senior club typically gets about 25 new members each year. We lose about 25 members each year for various reasons (moved to FL/AZ, disabled, dead, too expensive). Of the new members, usually 20 have an active GHIN handicap. About 5 each year do not have a GHIN handicap. When they join our club, we give each member a state association membership that includes GHIN handicapping services. We play a series of handicapped tournaments over the summer. When we sign up a new member who does not have a GHIN handicap, we attempt to give them an estimated index until they have sufficient scores posted to have an actual GHIN index.  Our first event typically is around May 15 so, in theory, a new member has about 6 weeks to post a few scores. Posting season in the Mitten starts April 1. Inevitably, several of the unhandicapped individuals seem  to either not play until the first tournament or can't figure out how to enter scores (hey, they are seniors). That situation then leads to my contacting the new member and asking a series of questions: a. Did you ever have a GHIN handicap? If yes, which State and do you recall what it was? b. Do you have an alternate handicap through a non-GHIN handicap service or a league? c. What do you think your average score was last year (for 9 or 18) d. What was your best score last year? Where did you play and which tee was used? e. What do you consider a very good score for yourself? Based on their responses I attempt to give them an index that makes them competitive in the first couple events BUT does not allow them to win their flight in the first couple events. We don't want the new members to finish last and at the same time, we don't want someone with a "20" playing handicap to win the third flight with a net 57. In the event some new member did shoot a net 57, we also advise everyone that we can and will adjust handicaps retroactively when it is clear to us that a member's handicap does not accurately reflect their potential. We don't like to adjust things retroactively and in the 8 years I have chaired the Handicap Committee, we have only done it once. So here are the questions to the mob: Any ideas how to do this better? Any questions one might ask an unhandicapped individual to better estimate their index/handicap? Would it be reasonable to have a new player play once (or more?) without being eligible to place in the money?
