So,  I have been taking Golf lessons at GolfTec since September and feel that I've stalled on shallowing the club.  Well, Monday I was hitting the ball well, (was practicing for an hour),  Looks like I finally turned a corner.  I returned today and could not shallow the club to save my life. What a frustrating game.  Thanks for listening.

Yeah, that happens. It's golf, and there is not much you can do about it. Happens to all golfers.

I sometimes practice the same routine too much, and things go south.  I chalk it up to boredom, and/or complacency. I just take a break from that routine, and move on to another practice routine.

When the wheels come off when playing, I just finish out the round with my goto club, and putter.

Golf is just an enjoyable game for me. Good, bad, or average, I always have a good time practicing or playing.

A golfer can't play relaxed when frusterated.

Never, EVER make a comment like that!  The golf gods are fickle, and mean.  As soon as you say that you’ve “turned a corner”, or “figured something out”, they will hand you a beat down of epic proportions!

You can think it.  But never say it out loud!  ;-)

First, have you used a video camera or smartphone to video tape yourself practicing what GolfTec is trying to get you to do?

Second, there could be something going on in the backswing that could hinder your ability to shallow the club.

How do you know you weren't just grooving the old swing? Did you practice properly, or just hit balls "trying" to do something? Did you record video?

Yes, thats a thought I've had as well.   I don't just hit balls.  After each swing I replay video and see if I'm hitting the key positions.

But you were still just making swings? Or… what? Can you describe your practice session?

Yes.  I usually practice 1 hour twice a week at GolfTec.  I do mostly full swings as this is the only place I can right now and see ball flight and replay the swing. But, I do practice drills given to me by my instructor mostly at the Gym after I work out.  They have a mirrors on all the walls in the group exercise room and i can see the correct position I should be in at each stage of the swing. The last thing we worked at was pushing the hips towards target or shifting weight to the left to shallow out the club.  I did it well Monday and felt I had really turned a corner but as I stated in my original post when I returned Tuesday I could not seem to keep the clubhead behind my hands at parallel on the downswing.  I probably hit 60 balls in 1 hour. Hmmmm, now that I see that thats about 1 a minute.

1. Keeping the clubhead behind the hands with club at parallel backswing and downswing.

2.  Shoulder turn

3. Starting the downswing with the upper body not the hips.

4. Hands in front of the ball at impact.

5. Keeping head as still as possible

6. Keeping left wrist more bowed then cocked.

7. Drawing the ball.

Thanks

I would like 1 day with "this game is easy." Right now, I'm satisfied with "it feels like it's getting better." I'm sure tonight's practice session will fall into 'I look like I have never played."

Full swings likely aren't "short" or "slow." You're likely not having anywhere near a 70%+ "success" rate either.

You should start doing the drills with a ball at GolfTec and lay off or dramatically reduce the "full swings" you make.

That's four to six things too many.

Hitting balls at a screen or even on the range has no consequences so you just use a natural swing. On the course you see a target along with water or trees or sand and most start swinging too hard. The “I got to get it there” mentality sets in and the smooth strokes go away. I like to practice on a real course when I can get out alone in off times. That’s how you learn all the shots.

    • However, have you ever considered using small summer houses for such setups? They offer a great solution for creating dedicated practice areas, especially for an affluent audience looking to enhance their outdoor living space.
    • I've played Bali Hai, Bear's Best and Painted Desert. I enjoyed Bali Hai the most--course was in great shape, friendly staff and got paired in a great group. Bear's Best greens were very fast, didn't hold the ball well (I normally have enough spin to stop the ball after 1-2 hops).  The sand was different on many holes. Some were even dark sand (recreation of holes from Hawaii). Unfortunately I was single and paired with a local "member" who only played the front 9.  We were stuck behind a slow 4-some who wouldn't let me through even when the local left. Painted Desert was decent, just a bit far from the Strip where we were staying.

    • Honestly, unless there's something about that rough there that makes it abnormally penal or a lost ball likely, this might be the play. I don't know how the mystrategy cone works, but per LSW, you don't use every shot for your shot zones. In that scatter plot, you have no balls in the bunker, and 1 in the penalty area. The median outcome seems to be a 50 yard pitch. Even if you aren't great from 50 yards, you're better off there than in a fairway bunker or the penalty area on the right of the fairway. It could also be a strategy you keep in your back pocket if you need to make up ground. Maybe this is a higher average score with driver, but better chance at a birdie. Maybe you are hitting your driver well and feel comfortable with letting one rip.  I get not wanting to wait and not wanting to endanger people on the tee, but in a tournament, I think I value playing for score more than waiting. I don't value that over hurting people, but you can always yell fore 😆 Only thing I would say is I'm not sure whether that cone is the best representation of the strategy (see my comment above about LSW's shot zones). To me, it looks like a 4 iron where you're aiming closer to the bunker might be the play. You have a lot of shots out to the right and only a few to the left. Obviously, I don't know where you are aiming (and this is a limitation of MyStrategy), but it seems like most of your 4 iron shots are right. You have 2 in the bunker but aiming a bit closer to the bunker won't bring more of your shots into the bunker. It does bring a few away from the penalty area on the right.  This could also depend on how severe the penalties are for missing the green. Do you need to be closer to avoid issues around the green?  It's not a bad strategy to hit 6 iron off the tee, be in the fairway, and have 150ish in. I'm probably overthinking this.
