I would love to play if I get my index back into single digits. Think of me as a last chance fill a spot kind of guy as I’d love to see others get a chance to play in the event.

You'd also be switching teams, which is a big deal!

Of course, you're able to share best what a great time this event can be, having been to the last two, as can anyone who has participated in 2015 or 2017. That list includes:

I'll be following closely.  For those who may be new to TST, or who haven't paid attention to previous Newport Cup competitions, I can tell you that this event is just about the most fun I've ever had related to golf.  I have met players from all over the country, and I feel like each one became a new friend.  Thanks in advance to @mvmac and @iacas for all the hard work I know it must take to put this together.

One small detail, Erik, the Newport Cup webpage needs to be updated just a bit, it doesn't show the winner of the 2017 competition.

Yeah, I'll certainly need to update the 2017 page. @RandallT was going to do that before life happened a bit.

Like @DaveP043 already outlined if you have the chance you should definitely play. Lots of golf and even better friendships. Las Vegas has tons of good golf and food, the location choice is fabulous, although I am very partial to Pinehurst, Las Vegas has the potential to hang out a few days ahead or behind the event just like Pinehurst did.

I have played in the last two therefore like @DaveP043 I will keep a close eye on the applications. Some of you young guys should be all over this.

It’s been a decade since my last Newport Cup appearance. Would love to join the fun again if it works out. Vegas, baby!

This competition should be on every TSTer's bucket list.  Erik and Mike select a great group of people.  The accommodations are terrific and the courses are top notch.  Anyone would be hard pressed to plan and execute a "buddy trip" that comes close to this.

Don't be concerned about the "application" process.  Two years ago it was fun and, for me, educational.  Everyone should toss their hat in the ring and then commit to following through with the selection process.

I’m planning on applying this year! I’m very confident that I’ll be a single digit by then. I’ve been wanting to take part for a while and have just never been in the position to apply. For sure following!

I will agree with a lot of others who have already chimed in here. It's a great event, and you should seriously think about applying to attend if you meet the criteria. It's basically a golf trip with your buddies that's more competitive than a normal golf trip.

I will definitely be applying because it was so much fun last time.

I'll add on to the others, only having played once, it was a blast and I will definitely be applying again.  Erik and Mike do a great job with this event and it is definitely one of the best golf related events I've ever played in.  If not the best.  Great people and fun competition.

I've been lucky to enjoy this competition more than once...the first one many, many moons ago. Erik and Mike did a great job last year putting this together at some awesome courses and added some excellent swag as well.  You never know what to expect going into a golf trip never meeting anyone before but I have to say all the guys were great and would have absolutely no reservations on doing it again (except playing @DeadMan every round) and hope some new blood will get to enjoy this experience.

I definitely plan on applying!

My handicap will likely be towards the upper end (probably 7-9) but I do plan on practicing a lot more this year than I have previously, so I don't think I should have any issue in keeping my handicap under 10.

Based on everything I have read from the 2017 Newport Cup, it sounds like an awesome event.

I know exactly what you mean.  I was paired against @mchepp in the final round in both 2015 and 2017.  That's hard work!

    • Makes sense.  Like I said, I wouldn't have been upset at their original offer either, and based on the fine print it seems like they've held up their end of the deal.
    • If you've only had to adjust retroactively one time in 8 years and have around 5 people each year without handicaps, that's like 40-50 people total so it sounds like you're doing a pretty good job. I think your questions give enough to go off of. This might be a good way to get new people to actually post a few scores during the 6 weeks leading into the first event. Something like "New members will be eligible for tournament money once they have at least 3 posted rounds in GHIN" or something like that. If they can get 3 rounds in prior to their first event, then they're eligible. If not, they'll soon become eligible after an event or two assuming they play a little bit outside of events.
    • This is a loooooong winded narrative so if you don't like long stories, move on. 😉 Our senior club typically gets about 25 new members each year. We lose about 25 members each year for various reasons (moved to FL/AZ, disabled, dead, too expensive). Of the new members, usually 20 have an active GHIN handicap. About 5 each year do not have a GHIN handicap. When they join our club, we give each member a state association membership that includes GHIN handicapping services. We play a series of handicapped tournaments over the summer. When we sign up a new member who does not have a GHIN handicap, we attempt to give them an estimated index until they have sufficient scores posted to have an actual GHIN index.  Our first event typically is around May 15 so, in theory, a new member has about 6 weeks to post a few scores. Posting season in the Mitten starts April 1. Inevitably, several of the unhandicapped individuals seem  to either not play until the first tournament or can't figure out how to enter scores (hey, they are seniors). That situation then leads to my contacting the new member and asking a series of questions: a. Did you ever have a GHIN handicap? If yes, which State and do you recall what it was? b. Do you have an alternate handicap through a non-GHIN handicap service or a league? c. What do you think your average score was last year (for 9 or 18) d. What was your best score last year? Where did you play and which tee was used? e. What do you consider a very good score for yourself? Based on their responses I attempt to give them an index that makes them competitive in the first couple events BUT does not allow them to win their flight in the first couple events. We don't want the new members to finish last and at the same time, we don't want someone with a "20" playing handicap to win the third flight with a net 57. In the event some new member did shoot a net 57, we also advise everyone that we can and will adjust handicaps retroactively when it is clear to us that a member's handicap does not accurately reflect their potential. We don't like to adjust things retroactively and in the 8 years I have chaired the Handicap Committee, we have only done it once. So here are the questions to the mob: Any ideas how to do this better? Any questions one might ask an unhandicapped individual to better estimate their index/handicap? Would it be reasonable to have a new player play once (or more?) without being eligible to place in the money?
