I think slow players do get fined as well. But we don't know about it because the PGA Tour doesn't publish the fines.

Then, published or not, it’s not effective.

Immediate DQ.  Regardless of circumstances.

Intentionally damaging the corner/edge of a practice putting green and immediately repairing it plus owning up to the mistake on social media and stating that you wont let it happen again does not deserve an immediate DQ IMO.

Right, but I think the public shame part of it could be effective. Not for everybody, because some players with a reputation for it just don't care (Day, Holmes). But it could get some people to speed up.

My men's club started publishing pace of play stats and publicly shaming people for playing slow, and our pace of play improved.

I don't like the example that sets for your average golfer.

I don’t think it sets any example imo. Either you’re that kind of person/player or you’re not. I don’t think anybody watches that kind of behavior and thinks ‘ I can’t wait to try that when I’m angry.’ There’s a difference between an outburst that’s immediately remedied and prolonged act of poor behavior ( Sergio).

McIlroy making this look like a pitch and putt course. Gets up there and drives the first. Easy birdie. Then gets up there and drives the second. Putting for eagle now. I'm sure DJ will follow suit.

I'm assuming Bryson will get fined, and rightfully so. I think slow players do get fined as well. But we don't know about it because the PGA Tour doesn't publish the fines.

He will be.

I disagree. Owning up to and apologizing for stupid behavior does not provide any sort of deterrent effect to these guys.  Nor does a fine.

You don't know that. You don't know that at all.

For all you know, without the fines, we'd see ten instances of this per week.

He had to know it was gonna yank right when it hit the green, he allowed it the space to roll towards the hole...shivers....

I don't even care if he doesn't make the putt, that shot was worth it

Ok, I mean, I care. And he missed it.

Someone on reddit claimed that was on the practice putting green and not during the actual round

Edit - Yup what @Vinsk said. Bryson also confirmed on instagram that it was on the practice putting green:

It's a good thing the other players don't work as hard as he does or care as much as he does or the PGATour would have to budget big bucks for green repair.  SMH

No, but blaming it on the fact that he works so hard and cares so much might.  LOL

Regardless of circumstance? Sorry, I can't buy that! People are allowed to get mad when they get screwed on the course.

However, causing damage is another deal. I think there's a better way by adding strokes to their score. That will cost them plenty of money. Much more than the fines which the PGA Tour is embarrassed to reveal! It's probably like fining us 50 cents! Or make it like technical fouls in the NBA. Get enough of them and you could get DQ'd or hit with so many strokes that it will kill your paycheck.

    • Thanks for the feedback. @StuM, we are a "club without real estate" so no facilities or pro. We have a membership of around 185 players and we only play together as a group at our tournaments, which are held at public access courses. A group of us setup the tournaments, collect the money and dole out the prizes.
    • In general, granting free relief anywhere on the course isn't recommended.  Similarly, when marking GUR, the VSGA and MAPGA generally don't mark areas that are well away from the intended playing lines, no matter how poor the conditions.  If you hit it far enough offline, you don't necessarily deserve free relief.  And you don't have to damage clubs, take unplayable relief, take the stroke, and drop the ball in a better spot.
    • If it's not broken don't fix it. If you want to add grooves to it just because of looks that's your choice of course. Grooves are cut into putter faces to reduce skid, the roll faced putter is designed to do the same thing. I'm no expert but it seems counter productive to add grooves to the roll face. Maybe you can have it sand-blasted or something to clean up the face. Take a look at Tigers putter, its beat to hell but he still uses it.
    • I get trying to limit relief to the fairway, but how many roots do you typically find in the fairway? Our local rule allows for relief from roots & rocks anywhere on the course (that is in play). My home course has quite a few 100 year old oaks that separate the fairways. Lift and move the ball no closer to the hole. None of us want to damage clubs.
    • Hello, I've been playing a Teardrop td17 F.C. putter for many years and love it. It still putts and feels as good or  better than any of the new putters I've tried and it's in excellent condition except the face has dings in it ever since I bought it used that kind of bother me. I was just wondering if it's possible to have some really shallow horizontal grooves milled into the face on a "roll face" putter. I think I would rather spend some money on it instead of trying to get used to a new putter.  Thanks
