I am looking at getting a Fairway Wood with around 16 degrees of loft on it. I would prefer either a Ping or a Taylormade. From my research I've come up with the G SF Tec (16') and the M2 3HL (16.5'). Please note that I am a beginner and I haven't really developed any particular behaviours (slicing, etc) so I don't know how much the G SF Tec would help me right now. But I've heard it is more forgiving than the TM which is really what I'm after.

Anyone have any thoughts on which one I should get or any experience comparing them?

I recommend getting custom fit that way you can get into the proper shaft as well as having the ability to try out multiple heads and see which models looks and feels the best.

Like @klineka wrote..you’ll really not know unless you hit them both. I’ve hit the Ping and love it. I don’t think you’ll get a huge difference in the different heads... it the shaft can make a substantial difference in feel and performance.

What @klineka said; also, get on a good launch monitor and try out a bunch of different fairway woods.  The testing is part of the fun.  I've said this far too many times on this forum, but seriously look at the Adams Tight Lies Titanium fairway woods.

I'm a broken record.  I have a 13.5* and it's the best fairway I've ever had.  The shallower head helps you catch the ball higher on the face for higher launch and lower spin.  I HATE chunky fairway woods as all I can do is catch them thin or feel I have to deloft them so much to catch them clean that I defeat the purpose of trying to get the higher strike.  I'm not sure as to all the different lofts, but I know they make the black Adams Tight Lies 2 in a 16* 3-4 wood.  For me, the titanium feels better and the 13.5* still gets up in the air and with more carry.  Plus, you can find these clubs on ebay much cheaper than the clubs you're looking at.
