Who Wins This 30-year Bet (3 and 16 Handicap)?
StKildaSenators replied to iacas's topic in Golf Talk
If he is a 16 after only 2 years I think that shows he puts in a lot of effort. Assuming he keeps that up (and the bet may be good motivation to), I think there is a good chance he gets close enough to a 3 handicap that a good round from him can beat a bad round from a 3. - Today

I all but guarantee Rahm is having second thoughts. Just my opinion of course.

"5 Minutes Daily" Practice Challenge
retoid replied to iacas's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
Day 15 - Still practicing chipping in the backyard, starting to show improvements. Been hitting off the rough grass in the backyard up until yesterday. Ordered a hitting mat and just started hitting off of it. I'll probably still mix it up. Improvements are: not blading the ball as often, starting to get a bit more accurate in both distance and direction. Still have a lot to learn. Also been trying to make it to the driving range about once a week to practice mostly driving, fairway woods and hybrids. Here's a short vid: video0.mov Shared with Dropbox- 15,057 replies

I have posted three scores now since the Philly section opened on April 1. 41-43-84 (72.1/135), 42-47-89 (72.1/135) and 42-45-87 (70.3/129). Same course, the last score from the forward tees. Weird that my best score was the first one out. It usually takes me about a month to get anything much lower than around 90 and my handicap usually shows it. But now it is holding steady. The range on grass is finally open. I hate the mats. My scores will improve accordingly.

I see that guys like Rahm and Phil are suggesting they now play 72 holes. They appear to be conceding that their circus is viewed as less than a true competitive event. Rahm was a whiney bitch all weekend at Augusta. Regrets?

Yeah, in the lessons I have taken we have worked on swinging less steeply. I probably still swing too steep with woods. Average yardages through my bag according to my Garmin watch (won't be 100% accurate due to sometimes the watch not picking up a shot, or me accidently clicking the wrong club): 60 - 100 yds 56 - 106 yds 52 - 125 yds PW - 149 yds (this one seems off to me) 9i - 149 yds 8i - 157 yds 7i - 167 yds 6i - 178 yds 5i - 190 yds 4i - 202 yds And longer than that is where I get into trouble: 2i - 208 yds (small sample size on this one, still mostly just practicing with it one the range as the slice % is too high for my liking) 4 wood - 202 yds (haven't used it much last season due to not liking it) Driver - 241 yds My driver has a huge variance as well. So for example on Sunday (the first round of the year) I hit it 5 times. 2 were big slices (186, and 179 well off to the right). 2 were my hands getting too closed and hitting a much too low draw/hook (239 and 225 on the left rough), and one came out low like the draw, but actually had a fade on it (210, just off the right side of the fairway. Looking back at some past rounds, the good drives (maybe 10% of shots) tend to be between 250 and 280. So when it is outside of 200 yds is where I really get into a lot of trouble. I will often play irons off the tee, or on a par 5 lay up to gap wedge range to try and give myself a comfortable shot in.

And yet on they have no problem calling every wooden club a persimmon even though they’re not all made of persimmon. As @iacas said, it’s just what the clubs are called.

Not Sure What to Put in the Bag as a 14th Club
billchao replied to StKildaSenators's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
Hybrids you're supposed to play much like your long irons. I don't really like them anymore because I have a tendency to hook them. I'm probably going to replace my 2h with a 5w soon. Fairway woods are meant to be hit off the ground with a shallower angle. You don't want to take too steep of a swing that you're taking much of a divot. If you have difficulty with the length you can try to choke down on the grip a little. I honestly don't think, based on what you're written so far, that a 3i is really the answer. Maybe learning how to hit the fairway woods better so you can play your 4w or even get a 5w might be the play. What are your yardages through the bag? Do you even need another club just because you can fit one in? -
And by 'growing the game' they mean growing their bank account. It's just a weak and stupid rationale.

Sorry I kinda snapped at you yesterday. I just got a little frustrated feeling that some of what I said was ignored. I don't claim to be some super good ball striker, just relatively good for my handicap. And I also find woods and hybrids much more difficult to hit. I'm not great with my long irons, but I made huge strides with my 4 iron over the last couple years and now hit it better than my 4 wood. I just don't seem to know how how to hit woods and hybrids. And I think there is a psychological factor too where it just feels a bit awkward to be using such a huge club on the fairway. I'll probably try and film some swings next time I go to the driving range. Oh definitely. I just think it makes sense do use the clubs that best fit my game. Although if I want to get my handicap down lower I definitely should try and improve all around.

Stage 5 - Time to Get Golfing
StuM commented on StuM's blog entry in My Personal Golf Transformation
Well, I got insanely busy and fell behind on my Evolvr & 5 minute daily practice in less that 2 weeks. I even skipped my 1st week of league, that has never happened. I need to be more disciplined! Therapist this morning decided to try something new. He added some kinesiology tape on the foot & ankle. That was about 8 am. By 10am I was feeling a whole lot less pain. 😀 -
I still use the "hit it on the screws" from time to time.

Almost 90 pounds, that is impressive. Well done.

I never like it when announcers call clubs "metals." I am old and thoroughly used to hearing clubs called woods and irons. Toss in wedges, hybrids and putters and I think we are done. Inevitably, there will be some in favor of using "Composites" or "Alloys". We did eventually move away from cleeks, spoons and mashies. Maybe I am just holding on to irrelevant tradition. Sigh.
-
I picked up two for the "Away" listing. It was somewhat of a surprise that I did not double up on either birdie but both holes were open. I hope to work on the "Home" listing this Friday.

So I played in my first league match and it was fun. I bogeyed every freaking hole. A 9 over 45. No real trend in the hiccups, a chunk here, a missed put there, fly one in the water, flew the green on a par three. There were 5 of us in our group and we got around in 2 hrs and 8 minutes walking. Not too bad. A load of fun.

Taking 5 strokes off your handicap is no small feat. I would agree in meeting with an instructor and practice. One thing that will help you is getting something that tracks your shots, i.e; Shot Scope or similar. After a handful of rounds that will give you true data on where you need to focus your practice. Also, take a look at your course management, that's a whole different topic but something to look at. I met with an instructor a year or so ago and in one quick look he identified my alignment issue in my set up, made a change and it helped considerably. I meet with with the instructor more often now and hopefully this time next year I'll be a little lower. Currently 15.7. It's a journey. Another thing that will help you is to compete. There's various tournament leagues, maybe one at your course that's flighted you can get in. Makes you think before you strike. If you want to get better once a week at the range probably wont be enough. There's drills here you can do inside or in the backyard if you have one. Do something everyday. Oh you said you don't have a ton of discretionary income so one thing you can do is post your swing here and Erik @iacasand a few others can give you some pointers. It's free, they are happy to help.

Not Sure What to Put in the Bag as a 14th Club
iacas replied to StKildaSenators's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
Two things are likely true here: You're not the ball striker you think you are with long irons. It's nearly impossible for anyone here to help you without seeing your swing. To the former, this topic might apply. To the latter, this is where you do it. -

Based on your post in a different thread you should be able to just about get from a 20 to a 15 by working on your putts inside 2 feet, right? Sounds like this should be your #1 focus in the short term while working on chipping and driving over the mid/long term.
