Groove Sharpener
TropicalSandTrap replied to TropicalSandTrap's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
"Go buy new clubs" is not advice on groove sharpeners Wasn't mark calcaveccia using old ping eye 2's until recently? Just gets his grooves resharpened. If a career touring pro finds using older clubs with fresh grooves acceptable certainly buying new clubs is not the only option. -
Yeah I'm talking about it on a message board. Does that increase golf channel viewership? How? i was going to watch the 2016 open replay yesterday whether Chamblee fabricated a controversy on Sunday or not. I am, however, less likely to watch shows where this guy is featured moving forward. Unfortunately they feature him during prime times so we are stuck with him.

I have not played much in the past five years but I have played hundreds of rounds with these wedges. I also frequently use them in the practice area. If you guys like to buy new wedges, fine. I have enjoyed the results from just using the wedges I have for a long period of time and having them freshened up. I disagree that I need to invest in new wedges every other year. And yes I have more than one wedge, that's why they add up in price. For vokeys I have a 48, 52, 54, 56, 58, 60 and 64 (with multiple 52 and 56 degrees). I have never seen the reason to have to go it and buy new ones because the grooves are worn, I am plenty comfortable with just having the grooves freshened up. I only have the 52, 56 and 60 in my bag now it the grooves are worn And like I said above I have always just had a professional club dude do it for me but don't have one available now, so I am asking for advice on groove sharpeners. I do know people who have been fine with doing it themselves so the response of "they are all bad, go buy new clubs" is bogus. I understand some people like to buy new ones every other year. To each their own. -
Does brandel Chamblee stirring the pot really increase golf channel viewership? I find that hard to believe. People who watch the golf channel are not watching to see if Chamblee is fabricating controversies. If anything he is a turn off. Just doesn't seem like golf viewership is dependent on creating controversies that don't exist. Most people who watch golf channel are golfers interested in golf, not some made up controversy over marking a ball.

Yeah, my conscience is clear. Right now my grooves are worn. If I get I groove sharpener I'm not going to go plowing them down to gain an advantage, im just going to try to freshen them up as they should be. In all likelihood they won't even come close to reaching the max level for depth sand width as I can barely sharpen a knife enough to cut a tomato. It seems like regrooving your clubs is something a golfer should be permitted to do with a clear conscious. I have watched a few youtube tutorials on it, doesn't seem too complex. Shouldn't have to invest in new wedges every other year or send the clubs to a professional (which I would do if one were nearby) to keep a clear conscious If I had a local guy who could do it like I used I would use that person, but I don't. Also, I have a few extra wedges hanging around that I would probably practice with first. -
Exactly. There was no pot to be stirred. The rules official addressed the issue at the appropriate time and made a decision, one that was ultimately correct. Yet this guy devoted his day to incorrectly complaining about it. I don't watch the golf channel to watch pot stirrig or contrived controversies or fake news. I watch it to see players hit shots, see what they are hitting from where, see how they get out of trouble, see amazing shots, see what how they handle themselves under pressure. If I want fake news drama I will just go to Facebook and read political posts.

Why would a groove sharpener make the clubs "illegal"? I know there are restrictions on the groove depth but the ones I see online say they have a restrictor so that they don't go below usga regulations. I used to just get them done professionally by a guy near my club, but I don't have anybody where I live now to do that (can't even find someone to regrip clubs) and I'm not shipping the clubs off. I also have never heard of anybody being disqualified from the local member or accused of cheating because they use older clubs but just get the grooves freshened up once a year. -

Vokey. The best out there and like I said, they last forever with a little tender loving care. -

No way do they need replacing. Nice wedges are like putters, they can last forever. Just need to get the grooves sharpened every couple of years. (And mine might be closer to 20 years old than 10 years old) -
Another thing you can do if you are on the fence about register or stiff shaft is just grab one of each. If you follow the price points I set up above, you could grab a regular and stiff flex and still be well under $500 for the complete set. Still much cheaper than buying a new driver with professional fitting. And just go to the range and hit a million balls with each and decide which one you like best. And what's the worst that comes of it? You have an extra driver sitting around? and while manufacturers can vary on flex, just get the same brand if you are worried about that. Callaway and taylormade and ping have enough quality control in their manufacturing where they are consistent. I was hitting my stiff driver the other day because I didn't have my regular flex. I still hit it fine, just was a little shorter and seems more "steered" or "aimed" than smooth flowing to me. But it's not like I hurt my game but my game taking 20 swings with a different club

My wedges cost between $450-600 new. I'm not going to go purchase new wedges when I already really like my current ones that I have had for over a decade but they just need some tender love and care. That would be a ridiculous move. I used to be able to just take them to a golf shop and have somebody sharpen the grooves for me, but nobody where I live does that. -
A beginner doesn't need to get fitted. A beginners swing is going to change so much from week to week, and the swing get are using now probably isn't he swing they even want to keep long term. Pay $60-80 on a driver, see how it goes. If it doesn't feel right then you haven't committed much and you can try again. Fittings and purchasing new clubs are expensive and don't make much sense for beginners.

Any advice on groove sharpeners? I see some online for $10-15, but do they work and how difficult are they to use? Is there one that somebody would recommend. Not looking to do all my clubs but want to get my wedges back in shape.

Also: unless you are larger than normal or very strong, I would start with regular flex for driver and fairway wood and hybrid. Most amateurs are fine with regular flex. If you are much larger and stronger than normal then stiff might be the way to go, but if you are in the realm of normalness go regular. I hit the ball a decent distance for an amateur and I still use regular flex (I'm not huge but if we went to a driving range I would be hitting my 7 iron and 3W as far Or in most cases farther than 90% of the people at the range). I can hit stiff flex, and I have stiff flex driver and fairwAy woods and hybrids in a spare bag, but regular is my preference. If regular isn't a fit for you, oh well, that's why you buy used at value condition to start most irons just use a standard shaft flex. Get steel shaft for your irons. Only old people use graphite shaft irons.

USed clubs are great value I think global golf is a good gauge as to price and quality be careful on eBay, but if you check the club versus what it is going for on global golf then eBay can be good too. I have found even the value condition clubs are fine. They are good bargains so if you get one and really don't like it then you can purchase a different one about 10-15 years ago huge improvements were made in golf clubs, but it hasn't gone stagnant the past 5 years. You can get real good used clubs for decent price for example: driver: you can get a decent callaway or ping or whatever driver for $60-80. It's more important to get the right shaft flex and a good loft than the brand fairwAy wood. Good fairwAy woods are cheap used. The callaway diablo that henrik stenson was using last yr in the open runs for $30 used hybrid. You can get a good hybrid for $30 as well. The Adams idea hybrids go for $150+ new, but $30 used irons. I saw a set of callaway x-18 5I - PW for $125 recently. Heck, I still use those exact irons. They are awesome. Not that you need those same ones, but most high end irons from the past decade are still up to date. Wedges: vokey wedges run from $30-60 used. Grab a 56, maybe a 52 and a 60 putter: again, you can get a used anser for like $20-30. Most high end putters are all designed after the anser. I randomly bought a used ping pal 2 from the 90's the other day for $20, it's in great shape. I have 3 Camerons and a bettinardi all of which are plenty expensive but this $20 putter is still just as playable. TO sum up: driver $75'ish fairway wood: $35 hybrid: $30 irons: $150 wedges: $60 putter: $35 thats a full set of high end clubs for $400'ish. And if you decide down the line you want to spend $250 on a driver or $100 on a putter or invest in a new set of irons you can always do that later.

It just seems funny that Chamblee believes in such high standards of accountability, but when he's wrong everyone says let it go. Chamblee devotes his day to calling rahm a rules breaker, but when it turns out rahm did not violate any rules the Chamblee defenders all say let it go, no big deal, Chamblee didn't realize he was wrong.
-
Why are you defending him? if Chamblee that all mistakes should be punished, then shouldn't he be punished if he went nuts over a perceived break in the rules when he was ultimately wrong? rahm didn't try to cheat, yet Chamblee has been on a crusade calling him a rules breaker. So even though Chamblee didn't intend to be wrong, should not he incur some sort of punishment for being a low class jerk?
-
Ok, so I guess we disagree what his job is. I don't view a golf channel post match show as a place to be stirring the pot. Create some pardon the interruption type show that airs during the week to stir the pot. After the round show some respect to the competitors and recap the round. Don't try to create stories that don't exist. Don't accuse some 22 year old champion of breaking rules when he didn't . That's low class And like you said, in his mind the guy broke the rules. But ultimately he was wrong. No rules were broken. So if he thinks rahm should be penalized for making a mistake I would say he should be suspended for trying to create a controversy that didn't exist because he was wrong. It's only fair right? Let's hold him to the same standard he is trying to hold others to Also, the officials did address the issue. Show them some respect. After all, the official was correct and Chamblee was wrong. And I don't mind them showing what happened but it was such a minor issue in the grand scheme of the tournament. Yet they made it the main story, which is my real beef with what was essentially tabloid journalism and I don't think people tune into a euro tour post game show to watch tabloid journalism, most are golfers just looking for a recap of the highlights, not Chamblee incorrectly ranting about something
-
I care. And I don't think that's what his job is. No other sport would they devote the entire post game to some inconsequential (and ultimately correct) call that took place halfway through the match. This wasn't like some game changing offsides in soccer. This was like a controversial called strike in the third inning of what ended up being a 5 run win in baseball Problem is, Chamblee thinks his job is the Hall monitor of the rules of golf. It's not. He should show some respect to the players who are putting themselves out there and competing rather than the role he has decided to take. Feel free to disagree if you want. That's just my opinion. Guy like Chamblee is a black eye for the sport.

TST Explores GAME Golf
TropicalSandTrap replied to iacas's topic in Balls, Carts/Bags, Apparel, Gear, Etc.
From what I can tell most of you have the physical unit. Thoughts on the app? -
Hahaha. For whatever reason I am watching the full replay of the 1987 us open at Olympic club on YouTube and on the 11th hole Seve has a 2 footer that his caddy is tending the pin on.
-
When is the last time you watched a football game that wasn't really that close and the entire post game show was devoted to a holding call that either was or wasn't called in the 3rd quarter? thats my problem. Golf channel devoted their entire Sunday to a call where the official did address it at the appropriate time, made a ruling, and his ruling turned out to be correct. Yet because it was a perceived breach of the strict technicality of the rules of golf (even though it wasn't even a violation at all), it turned into a scandal that overshadowed everything else. the guy didn't cheat. He tried to place the ball where it belonged. He ultimately did place it where it belonged. And he made a 2 foot putt. The official addressed any issues at the appropriate time and made he right call. Why did it become the scandal of the year? I mean, of the dude is playing hozel hockey in the rough, or caught dropping a ball down the pant leg through a hole in his pocket, or lying about his score on a hole, that's cheating. MArking the ball where it was supposed to be isn't cheating. It's not even a violation.
-
So it was not a violation. Just like the official correctly determined during the round Yet golf channel devoted its Sunday to this because brandel Chamblee has some weird obsession with trying to knock down those who achieve more than he could.
-
In my time zone the round was over by 6 am

What is game golf and how does it differ from an app like golf logix?
