One key to helping friends who have to play iffy clubs, is to play with them, maybe make no more than ONE suggestion, and try not to belittle the clubs they use. I know and have known many golf snobs who put down far too many beginners. I know one at the range I most often use, who loved making comments about my driver. I knew I needed a new driver, but as a retired person, I am not in a position to whip out the old Master Card and buy a $500 driver. We all were iffy and poor hitting beginners, well, except for Tiger. Encourage the beginners, including those who have clubs from First Tee.

Day 487 Got a bit of physical routine practice in today to make sure I fully rotate. It was 5 minutes here and there between other requirements for the day.

Day 436 More work one getting the hips around and keeping the lag solid. What came about today is a much better sense of line and a return to my slight draw. As well, better yardage off of the tee with both the driver and 7i. Need another day of focus to get the actions back into my swing without thinking too much.

Day 485 Finish 3 days of physically working on the turn sequence to allow a better loading up on the right side of the body, better shoulder position and fuller hip rotation. It helped that I did a lot od the work with the infamous Orange Whip® which allowed be to feel not only the fullest of actions but work as well on a better sense of the lag. Tomorrow I will load up with the clubs and balls.

Day 483 Made adjustment to my plan for today to work on my shoulder and hip rotation to get rid of a captain hook that seemed to have come for a visit this past week or so. Perhaps it came in when I twisted my back a few weeks ago and which I simply ignored and kept playing. Some good progress as I went on, but not comfortable with the changes yet.

Every once in a while, I say it is fun to see such a risk taker. And, Bubba seems to have fun as well.

Day 482 Ok, I was a bit lazy today. Last week was a lot of golf swings. Many were simply trying out the new toy and not keeping track of just how many swings I had taken. So, while not achingly sore, I best can describe by shoulders as tired; I can say the same about my legs and hip muscles as well. So, I simply took about 15 minutes this AM to go through the swing at various speeds. I set the timer so I would not go wildly beyond the time I wanted to do. This was primarily being done to keep the muscles active and not create physical problems in the long run. I also concentrated a lot on the plane of the swing as I have been going too far in to out and creating a hook on many of this weeks non-driver shots. This will be the concentration of the week starting with a range session tomorrow and a round on Tuesday.

Day 481 Easy day as it is football Saturday. I took out my ancient blade putter, more for something to change up, to see if it were possible to do a better job with speed on putts over 15'. I was fairly pleased with the results. I still tended to miss on the longer putts, but got it down to the point where I basically had a somewhat short tip in. That I can take. From within 6' I was a sharpshooter. Either drained it or missed by no more than a full roll. No clinkers off the back of the hole.

The two courses I primarily play call the so called women's tees as simply Forward. Simply a third choice. And, at my age and given my somewhat handicapped body, I play the forward tees, regardless of the designation. Heck, I became aware of a young woman in the foursome I was assigned to join, who played from the Champion tees and out drove everybody, including me at the Forwards and, in the end made the rest of us look like really bad hacks (instead of the mere old hack I consider myself.) Get rid of any sex reference in how one names the tees.

Day 480 Would that practice today would have been only 5 minutes. I am exhausted. I did once through the bag with Top Tracer. I have not really sat down to look at the numbers, but a few things hit me. Compared to my first use of Top Tracer 18 months ago, vast improvement is shown. Even in the areas I felt were not solid today ( I am talking to you, irons), the results were significantly better. Distance, dispersion, and angles all were much better. Some problems were quite different, My favoring a fade has now moved into a draw. And iron mishits often were what I call an unsigned left turn. Wedges were ok, though not perfect. Best of my three was the 60º. 50º also tended to go left. Hybrids were ok, though the spheres only rose to 12' in average. Irons were at best ok. Greater distance and more predictable distance. But, on this day, dispersion was very poor. Usually left but one really bad slice zinger on both the 6i and 7i. Onto the Driver. First time attacking the Top Tracer with the G410. Good Distance (195-205) with an Angle loft of 22º. Not sure if that is too much as the club was only added last Monday. The dispersion was about 3-8 feet to the right (I had adjusted for the draw). Of all of the numbers TT gave, these were the ones I watched the most. Height was almost set in stone at 30' and the same for my ball speed at 109. This is WAY up from when I started when I muddled along at 89. Practice, technique and new toy all helped. Now I need to make some adjustments in technique to translate the ball speed into a few more yards. 100 shots over just under 2 hours. That is a LOT for this old body. However, came home and the dog wanted a walk, a LONG walk. I still love him!

Day 479 Today would be best called "Twist and Shout Day"! Looking at recent videos indicated rather anemic movement of the hits and less than firm shifting of weight on the knees Yes, I did hit about 15 round things, but one would have noticed the majority of time today was with the driver and Orange Whip®. As a result I smacked some solid drives, even into the swirling wind. The poor rotations, I feel, were the result of a week with back pain. Now that the back feel much stronger, I need to get back on track, especially with the hybrids.

Day 478 It arrived today. What arrived was my new driver: a Ping 410 Plus with Alta CB Red Soft Regular Shaft. As I am still getting used to the new toy, I started with all the adjustable parts set to the most neutral settings. Soon I adjusted to help with a slice. All after that change were straight where I was aiming. I seemed to have picked up 10 MPH in terms of ball speed. I need to work now on the results not being so high. I intended to hit only 20-25 balls. I ended up hitting 45 as this club made driving fun. It was easy to hit towards various target greens. What I need to adjust after a few more practice section I the launch angle to lower the fact that wit my older drive I tend to hit high spin. I rarely, if ever, fall in love with a club so quickly, but even with days of getting used to it ahead, as I said in my review on the Ping web site, it was love at first whack.

Day 477 9i day While I did not get the distance I was hoping for, I was off only by a few yards. Dispersion was the best today and I was able to keep it very much o target. 50 solid whacks at a nice group of targets.

Day 476 Took time to work on the 3w off of the turf. Nice solid distances (180 yards on average), good dispersion, and loft. As I had not done this as a single focus in a long, long, time, I was happy, but it will not be untilI have done this again that I will know if it were not just dumb luck!

I agree. I am using an Alta CB 55 (SR) and get excellent loft. The. soft regular may be too flexible for you; go back to your fitter and tell them they got it wrong. It does happen

I started out with a bag of hand me downs, mostly MacGregor. I played them for almost 6 years, only changed my putter. In 1975, I finally got my first set of new clubs. I settled on on set from Wilson. I am very glad I got "basic" golf down before I bought them. Not a lot of options from most brands. Blades only, steel shafts and not much on the basic market of items such as the 30 options I choose from for new grips. Price was average for the time ($275.00). If I were new to golf today, I would go try out some clubs. Then, I would do my best to find a most similar set on many of the sites that deal in used cubs. A phone class my even get you some good advice.

As a great drive for me the days is anything over 200, I do that often unless it is a par 3

A PGA tour pro I was playing a round with once told me, as he was having a not too great of a round, that today he was teaching me how to make good recovery shots as he was having to make more than a handful of them himself. I chuckled and he continued, if you cannot laugh at yourself on a bad day, you will not survive this game. Advice still good 40 years later. My bad habit is rushing myself in thought and action.

Day 475 Despite frustration with my Bucky Badgers, I got in a fairly good workout in terms of rotation and lag. All in all, I spent 30-40 minutes just going through the motions followed by maybe hitting 20 shots. Faults with the rotation were obvious: I found myself inn weird positions at impact, often with the full torso leaning too far back away from the strike point. And/or being so stiff as to end up topping or chunking. So, before heading out to the range, I took out the popular camera and videoed my process. I was all over the place. I knew what I should look like to rotate for the best results. It took many repetitions, slowly, of a good process. I finally felt, while checking with the video, that I had made a good number of good actins in a row. I took them withy 7i. No chunks, no topping, just dod sounding and good looking shots. Tomorrow Iwill do the same. It seems as if the lack of videoing any practice ended up with poor habits of the past returning.

Dat 473 Only 6i work today. Taking suggestions on how to hit much straighter and somewhat faster mid iron shots was primarily watching address position, turn turn turn, simply swinging freely. Speed showed improvement and I was able to keep most of the shots well with a 8' width os my imaginary fairway. Even as I went for greater distance. Was it dumb luck? Looking forward to working with a top tracer tomorrow to check results.

Day 472 Wonderful day in terms of weather and work. 73º and a light breeze. Decided to work with the driver. 20 hits with a focus on line and distance. I was most pleased that all went straight with a very nice draw. Lately I have noticed a great increase in speed; I have been whacking between 110 and 120 for the most part. Given my weapon (Ping G5 120º with offset) and my old body, this has been about 20 mph over the last month or so. To be honest, I do not think too much of this when I tee off. When done I will note an average or so. Now I need to continue to adjust. With the new speed, I need to work to increase the distance and roll. I have been stuck at 175-190 in flight and another 20-25 on bounce and roll. This is hitting the range balls. Using non-range balls for a round yesterday, I even got a drive of 240 in flight. Yes, it was an outlier, but it brought a big smile to my face. Thus ends mu catechism for today.

Day 471 The practicing yesterday, which was the overall best in months, so I was ready for today. Had time to play 9. Mainly Par 4, with 2 Par 5 and only one Par 3. My drives are where I noticed a solid from the last time. I gained ~ 7 yard improvement on my drives with good loft and sold direction. I was often well in position to go for a par of birdie. It was primarily with my 4h and 7i were, that I saw the most improvement in direction. I hit my only penalty of the day into water with when I pitched with my 56º, hit a cart path causing the ball to roll right into water’s edge. Final score was 40. Solid round; best round in fact for me at this course. Plans are for an round of 18 this week and a round of 9.
