  1. Like our 2008 , 2009 , 2010 , 2011 , 2012 , 2013 , 2014, 2015, and 2016 threads, here's the official thread for 2017. The rules are the same as they've been: Post your goals personal golf-related goals for 2017. Be specific and thorough. Elaborate on how you'll go about achieving these goals. Details, people! Post just once, though if you reach all of your goals, you should quote your post and revise them later in the year. And set harder goals next year. Keep the replies to a minimum. This thread is mostly for the posting of goals. If you want to encourage more discussion of your goals, post a copy of them in your Member Swing thread. If you're looking to recap your 2016 goals, that's over here in this topic. Let's hear 'em!
  2. 2017 Player Of The Year

Dustin Johnson, Jordan Speith or Justin Thomas? Dustin for me... Feels like even with 4 wins thus far, he underachieved. When he is on (a lot), he was seemingly the most consistently dominant tee to green player seen since the hey day of TW and apparently he can hole out a clutch put too. Don't even get me started on his length..
  3. Welcome to the "5 Minutes Daily" Practice Challenge for August, 2017! The rules are the same as always: Make a detailed post describing your practice every day during the month. Try to limit the number of very short or "ditto" type posts. Describe what you did for at least five minutes of practice (indoors or out, with or without golf balls, etc.). No back-dating or pre-dating posts or practice sessions. On the last day of the month, if you completed the challenge, post about it in red text so I can notice it and give you the award. Enjoy and practice hard! Note: you can miss one day per monthly challenge if you have a good reason and still be eligible for the monthly award.
  4. This year, @mvmac and I are going to start what we think will become an integral part of the way we choose teams in the future. Those of you with Newport Cup Candidate badges (and those who will ask to be given one the rest of this year), we're going to ask you to fill out a very simple survey. How? With a video! This will help us (and your prospective teammates!) not only put a face to your name, but to learn a bit more about you than what we can discern from a username, an avatar, and what you have to say in your posts. Here are the questions we'd like you to answer: VLog a Par 3, Par 4, and Par 5. Talk as little or as much as you want. Narrate your strategy, describe the hole, tell us about your best shot ever there, whatever you like. Include your full pre-shot routine, but shoot from any appropriate angles that you like. Pretend you just holed a bomb to win the Newport Cup for your team, and show us how you'd react: a fist pump, a leap into Poppy's pond… whatever. Why do you deserve to be chosen to play in the 2017 Newport Cup? What is your best competitive golf memory? Describe your ideal Newport Cup roommate? What makes you a good roommate? Are you a night showerer or a morning washer? Do you snore? Do you require fifteen minutes of "hair prep" time? When did you join TST, why, and what have you enjoyed about it since joining the most? Tell us something about yourself that a prospective teammate or captain might not want to know. Describe your greatest sporting achievement? Who is the person on TST - regardless of location - you'd most like to have on your team? Who is the person you'd least like to face on the opposite team? (You must choose different people.) Why? Some basic rules: Production quality counts, but only for a little, and only to the point that it may demonstrate a little bit about how much you'd like to make the team. It's not a video production contest. Repeat the question (at least enough of it so we know what you're answering), then give your answer. Smile. These videos should be fun - to make, to view, etc. Be creative. So long as it's not offensive, have fun with it and be creative. Just because there's a list of questions up there doesn't mean you have to just repeat them and answer them. Have your wife interview you. Shoot it Barbara Walters style. Whatever tickles your fancy. Elaborate. Entertain us. Don't just say "I'd like to have so-and-so on my team because he's a good player" or "My best sporting achievement is when I won the city ping-pong championship in 2003. That was fun." February picks are not exempt from this… but those of you hoping to be chosen in February have almost three weeks, so get on it. Upload and embed. Upload your video to YouTube (or Vimeo) and embed it here in this topic. Make it unlisted if you want, that's fine. Title it something like "@iacas's 2017 Newport Cup Application Video." Other rules may follow if necessary. We'll append them to this first post. So… let's see 'em! Start planning and, for those of you with lower handicaps in particular, start filming your videos! Please also add (in text, to your post here) this information and anything else we may need to know: Shoe size(s) Shirt size(s) Pant size List the brand names for the sizes in case any adjustments need to be made. Note: Not listed here but very important is the amount an applicant posts. We want to get to know people before we meet them at the Newport Cup. That's part of what made 2015 so successful - we already felt like friends because we already were, and we'd gotten to know everyone already. Someone with five to ten posts per week is unlikely to be chosen.

  8. https://www.forbes.com/sites/erikmatuszewski/2017/02/20/the-nine-most-eagerly-awaited-new-golf-courses-of-2017/#42e5b0345179 Stoatin Brae (Michigan) Shepherd's Rock (Pennsylvania) The Summit Club (Las Vegas) Bayou Oaks Golf Course (Louisiana) Big Cedar Lodge - Gary Player Short Course (Missouri) Silvies Valley Ranch - (Oregon) Sand Valley - (Wisconsin) Streamsong - Black Course (Florida) Dazante Bay (Mexico) (Honorable Mention) Leaving aside the fact that the list had only EIGHT courses on it… it's a good list.
  9. They're doing a whole "selection show" right now on Golf Channel. Spieth, Moore, Ikeda, and Tanihara are in the first group. Group 5.
  10. Hi Guys, I'm fairly new to this website. I wanted to join to begin a forum on Indoor Putting Greens. I know most of us reside in the cold states where we can only sit and dream about golf. I grew tired of this routine of playing golf and finding my game by the time it was too late and the leaves began to fall and soon enough the snow-birds were snow-birding again.... lol. Anyways, I'm an avid golfer, a golf junkie, a golf pyscho, a serial golfer... whatever it is I'm just obsessed with the game. I love it, like all of us do on this site. I've got 3 kids, so this project was a MUST DO. I made a massive putting green in the basement after reading many reviews for the material Kevin Na and Ben Crane were touting about a couple years ago. I learnt many of the tour pros used this material so I HAD to get my hands on it. I thought it would've been pricey but it was super affordable. I spent about 2 weeks building and boy, was it worth it. The finished product was beyond my imagination - I've played many great golf courses and the green actually emulated the best. I even added slopes. And for the record, I'm basically here to spread the word that it is completely possible to have a massive(or small) putting green in your home without breaking the banks like these synthetic turf company's charge. The project literally cost me less than $400. The kids love it, they're down there and have practically forgotten about their Ipads and Ipods and video games(true story). But best of all, the WIFE APPROVES. Here are some pictures - If people are interested in how I constructed, please just feel free to comment. We do not need to be golf hibernators anymore! :)
  11. Welcome to the "5 Minutes Daily" Practice Challenge for February, 2017! The rules are the same as always: Make a somewhat detailed post describing your practice every day during the month. No back-dating or pre-dating posts or practice sessions. On the last day of the month, if you completed the challenge, post about it, preferably in red text or something so I can notice it and give you the award. Detail what you did for at least five minutes of practice (indoors or out, with or without golf balls, etc.). Enjoy and practice hard! Note: you can miss one day per monthly challenge if you have a good excuse and still be valid to win the monthly award. BTW since February is the shortest month… if you've ever wanted to do the least amount possible to get the 5 Minutes Award, this is your month to do it!
  12. Bubba will apparently be playing with a lime green golf ball. And this is the home of the 16th hole… one of the rowdiest spots on earth. I still think they should leave the stands up year-round. When they're not there, the hole is boring as ****.
