The Young Americans Need to Step Up

Will any young Americans step up and compete with Sergio Garcia, Adam Scott, and Luke Donald?

Thrash TalkThe PGA Tour season is officially over, and it’s time to get ready for 2006. I watched the Tour Championship this past weekend, and I definitely enjoyed the golf. It will have to hold me over for a couple months. I’ve been known to notice things in various tournaments that some people don’t really care to notice, and this past weekend was no different.

First off, congrats to Bart Bryant for winning his second event of the season. Bryant outlasted a tough field and definitely isn’t a no-name winner anymore. Tiger Woods battled the entire event and was in contention as usual. Other Americans in the top-10 included Scott Verplank, Davis Love III, and Ben Crane. Verplank and Love are both in their 40s as far as age goes, and Woods and Crane will both turn 30 in the next four or five months.

2005 Year in Review

The year 2005 has had its fair share of ups, downs, and everything in between.

Thrash TalkWith the Tour Championship on the horizon this week, the 2005 PGA Tour season is quickly coming to an end. The top golfers on tour will do all kinds of different things in preparation for next season. Some will play in charity events, skins games, etc. Others will simply use their free time to work on their golf games and spend much-needed time with family.

Annika’s Still on Top

With all the talk about the young guns coming to the LPGA, people are forgetting just how dominant Annika Sorenstam still is.

Thrash TalkThere have been numerous articles written worldwide about Michelle Wie’s disqualification at last week’s Samsung World Championship, including a few right here at The Sand Trap. That’s definitely the hottest topic in the golf world right now, all tours included. I thought it was pretty interesting at first, but I have to admit, I’m already tired of hearing about it.

Who are These Golfers?

Is it good for the PGA Tour when no-names walk away winners?

Thrash TalkIt’s been a wild last few days for yours truly, but in a good way this time. I flew out to North Carolina to meet some of my fellow Sand Trap staff members for the Newport Cup. The entire weekend was very fun and entertaining. I had a great time with everyone, and the golf courses were great. We definitely don’t have many courses like Pine Needles in Oklahoma. I wouldn’t mind playing golf in North Carolina for a month or two straight, but I guess two days will have to do. My team did take the loss, but we are better because of it.

Now it’s back to reality and back to Thrash Talk. I didn’t catch very much of the PGA Tour’s Michelin Championship at Las Vegas this past weekend, but I’ve seen some highlights from the final round. Wes Short Jr. defeated Jim Furyk in a playoff to win his first-ever PGA Tour event. If you are wondering who Wes Short Jr. is, well, join the club.

The Full Monty

Colin Montgomerie’s hopes of finally winning on United States soil were dashed once again after a mediocre final round.

Thrash TalkWGC-American Express Championship was an awesome event for golf! The last man standing was the best golfer in the world, Tiger Woods. Tiger defeated John Daly in a playoff after Daly three-putted from 15 feet. It was great to see two fan favorites battle it out until the very end, and it was great to see John Daly play so well alongside the big guns in the sport. Unfortunately for Big John, he three-putted twice in his last four holes to give the event to Mr. Woods. The victory was Tiger’s tenth in his World Golf Championship career.

Here Wie Go Again

In this week’s Thrash Talk, I’m going to sound off on a few topics that really get under my skin.

Thrash TalkFirst off, I hope everyone has had a more relaxing week than I have. My wife and I closed on our first house Thursday, and it’s been chaos ever since! That being said, I’m ready to settle in and talk a little golf. I’ve done my best to catch the main headlines this past week in the golf world, and a few of them have caught my attention. Michelle Wie, the soon-to-be professional, dominated the news once again.

Any golf fan who halfway pays attention to the sport knew Wie would turn professional as soon as she had the chance, and that seems to be the case. Wie announced this past week she intends on turning pro tomorrow. Well, actually her dad made the decision, which also comes as no suprise to yours truly. Wie’s dad has been a little controversial as of late, making just about every business decision for his daughter.

Presidents Cup Gets Two Thumbs Up

The Presidents Cup stepped up to the plate and hit a home run this past weekend.

Thrash TalkThe only things I heard last week about the Presidents Cup was the constant talk of the event being the “Ryder Cup wannabe.” I could care less about all the talk because the Presidents Cup is one of my favorite events in all of golf. The last time the event was played, it ended in a 17-17 tie, and that gave the critics a bigger excuse to moan and groan. Well, the 2005 version has come and gone, and the winner wasn’t decided until the birdie putt was holed by Chris DiMarco on the 18th hole in the final pairing at Robert Trent Jones Golf Club.

Is College Golf Extinct?

There are so many young golfers skipping college or leaving early, and it’s time for a change.

Thrash TalkThere is no secret by now that I am a huge Oklahoma State Cowboys fan! I follow Oklahoma State athletics very closely, including the golf program. The program has produced a lot of PGA Tour golfers including Scott Verplank, Bob Tway, Charles Howell III, Hunter Mahan, etc. I don’t like to brag too much, but it’s definitely one of the best golf programs in the nation. I take a lot of pride in this, and it’s always exciting to see the new recruits each season.

Salute to the Solheim Cup

The Solheim Cup definitely gained at least one new fan this past weekend.

Thrash TalkIn last week’s Thrash Talk, I talked a little bit about the Ryder Cup. This week, however, I’m going to discuss the Ryder Cup’s female counterpart, the Solheim Cup. The event was this past weekend as most golf fans know, and it was honestly the first one I have ever been interested in. I have been trying to make an effort to get more involved in watching women’s golf, and the Solheim Cup definitely gave me many more reasons to become a bigger fan.
