The month of September was dominated by two things in golf: Tiger’s continuous stroke-play winning streak and the European Ryder Cup domination. Tiger won the Deutsche Bank Championship the first week of September and the WGC-American Express Championship the last week of September (it actually ended October 1st). Tiger said his streak ended when he lost in the World Match Play Championship, but it’s actually still going strong at six in a row.
The 36th playing of The Ryder Cup was just as impressive in the month of September. The hype was higher than ever, and the performance of the Europeans was better than ever. Europe beat the United States in a landslide en route to winning The Ryder Cup for the third straight time.
Was Tiger’s play good enough to outlast the great play of the European Ryder Cup team? Also, who else performed well in the month of September? These questions and more are answered in this month’s Bunker’s Dozen. If you have anything to add, feel free to comment below or discuss it in the forum. I hope everyone enjoys the list!
European Ryder Cup Team dominated the United States by a score of 18½ to 9½. The Europeans won all five sessions.
Tiger Woods won both of the stroke-play events he entered in September, but came up short in his two match-play events. He is still decent, by the way.
The 36th Ryder Cup showed once again why the event continues to be one of the best in the entire world of sports. I can’t wait for the 2008 Ryder Cup!
Karrie Webb won for the fourth time this season and is right on Lorena Ochoa’s heels on the LPGA Tour money list and for Player of the Year honors.
Paul Casey won the World Match Play Championship, moved to the top of the European Tour Order of Merit, and won three points in The Ryder Cup (including a hole-in-one on Saturday).
Jim Furyk won the Canadian Open for his second PGA Tour win of the season. He is the second best in the world in my book.
Annika Sorenstam won her third tournament of the season and continues to sneak up the money list (currently third place).
Ian Woosnam was criticized a little going into The Ryder Cup, but he quickly shut the critics up by coaching the Europeans to victory.
Byron Nelson passed away in late September. Nelson was a great ambassador for the game and won 11 straight tournaments in 1945. Read Byron’s ProFile for more.
Ben Curtis Ben Curtis won for the second time this season and proved he isn’t a one-hit wonder or two-hit wonder.
The Big Break VI kicked into gear on The Golf Channel in September, and it should be interesting with Donald Trump constantly lurking.
Cristie Kerr won an event for the second consecutive month. After starting slow this season, Kerr is up to fourth on the LPGA Tour money list.
Tom Lehman seemingly did everything right with the United States Ryder Cup team, but his team took a beatdown nonetheless.
Dropped Out: Steve Williams, Richie Ramsay, Lorena Ochoa, Sherri Steinhauer, Stewart Cink, Medinah, Dean Wilson, Steroid Talk, and Luke Donald.
what about Newport Cup 2006 ?!?!
🙂
Cody you are desperately grasping at straws. Tiger’s streak is dead. Tiger even says it has ended, stroke play match play or what ever. I know it’s popular to love Tiger, but stop grasping and just watch what he does accomplish. No doubt it will be great, there’s no need to falsely keep a random streak stat alive just to placate your Tiger envy.
Donald Trump is an egotistical moron. And, no, the Big Break VI doesn’t rank at all on any top list except all time rediculas game shows.
Tom Lehman? …The worst captain since Hal Sutton. My choice for 2008 Ryder Cup Captain, …Johnny Miller! He would at least keep it interesting and you can bet a guy like Stu Cink don’t make it as a pick.
…just my $0.02,

Brad,
If you have read my other articles, and I hope you have, you would know I’m probably at or near the top of the anti-Tiger list. I’m not a fan at all. His streak of six consecutive PGA Tour wins IS still going. Name the last PGA Tour event he didn’t win when he was in the field.
As for Tom Lehman, he pulled the strings just like everyone else would have. He just got saddled with the blame when it obviously should have gone to the players themselves.
I like The Big Break. That’s all I’ll say about that. 🙂
Thanks for reading.
How can any golfer not be a TW fan??? I’m perplexed.
And as to the superficial qualifier of consecutive “PGA” events, Tiger’s streak stands now at one in a row. Even Tiger knows that. Although Tiger does beleive he has a Grand Slam — he does not — he realizes his loss in the World Match Play was the end of his win streak.
His cut streak is still alive, and I think he may break his previous record. But that’ll be awhile, right?
Hey the big break is a great game show, but the Trump factor turns me off. So does the fact the cutest girls get eliminated too soon. Maybe they should get a hot Jennifer Connely looking beverage cart girl.
Tiger rules,
