Up to this point, nothing in the current irons lineup from the folks at Cobra Golf did much for me as they seemed to fit more in the game improvement category and were also a bit “busy” looking for my taste.

With input gathered from their Tour staff, we now have some irons for the better golfer in mind with the introduction of the Pro CB and Pro MB irons. These new additions look more up my alley. I’m not saying I’m good enough to play either, but they pass my “do they look nice” test.

Just how good are these new offerings? JB Holmes used a set of Pro CBs to win the FBR Open (hitting over 70% of greens in regulation) and Geoff Ogilvy used a set of Pro MBs to win the WGC-CA Championship (and was #1 in GIR) just a couple of weeks ago. I would say these new irons are off to a pretty great start.

The folks at MacGregor Golf have been making golf equipment for 110 years. Recently, some profitability issues, ownership changes, and some rather bland product lines have made them almost an afterthought in today’s golf equipment world.

Happily, those days seem to be in the past with the release of their new MT line of clubs that include drivers, woods, hybrids, wedges, and five new iron sets. So come along as we peruse all that MacGregor Golf has to offer.

I’m doing something a bit different this week for The Bag Drop (don’t worry, we’ll get back to introducing you to new clubs next week!) and instead focusing on a great event that is coming up for those of us who live in the northern part of the United States.

That’s right, golf season is right around the corner. And it couldn’t have come at a better time for those of us who’s cabin fever is driving them (and our spouses) nuts. George highlighted a few items last week and that got me thinking about what I need to do in order to hit the ground running for the fast approaching golf season.

There have been a ton of new clubs released in the past few months, and the folks at TaylorMade are jumping into the fray as they have a couple of new drivers, new irons, and a new wedge coming out just in time for spring.

I was able to take a closer look at several of the new offerings while attending the Minnesota Golf Show last month and I think TaylorMade has some pretty nice clubs coming out. I’m looking forward to see if any of their new offerings will knock out my golf bag’s current occupants.

Ah, it’s finally March, which means for us in the non-golfing areas of the United States, we can see the light at the end of our long, dark winter and finally play golf again.

What does that have to do with TaylorMade’s new Rossa Monza Spider putter? Not much except that you’ll be able to roll one of the bad boy’s out on the putting green when they become available to the golfing masses later in March.

The Rossa Monza Spider has already appeared in the winner’s circle as J.B. Holmes used one to win at the FBR Open about a month ago. Let’s take a look at one of the more interesting looking putters for 2008.

The folks at Cleveland Golf have been quite busy as of late as they have introduced new putters, a couple of new iron sets, as well as the latest incarnation of the HiBore drivers, fairway woods, and hybrids – all within the past month.

The “scooped-out” shape still remains in the HiBore XLS line but new for this year features a higher Moment of Inertia (MOI), more customization options, and even larger heads.

Let’s take a look at version 3.0.

Now that Cleveland Golf is getting settled in with their new parent company, they can get back to the business of what they do best: making golf clubs. What they are coming out with however, may surprise you a bit.

Cleveland Golf purchased this little putter company called Never Compromise back in 2003 and has had pretty good success on the PGA Tour with the distinctive black and gray putters. While still maintaining the Never Compromise brand, Cleveland continued to make its own line of putters and is coming out with a new line in 2008: the VP Milled putters.

Quick, what is the first thing that pops into your mind when I say Tour Edge? Reasonably priced clubs that always seem to make all the “hot lists” and score well on club tests in various publications? A lifetime warranty for all their clubs? The crazy-long Exotics line? I’ve never heard of them?

If you answered one of the first three then you already know what I am talking about. If your response was more along the lines of “never heard of them” then you may need to get out a bit more as the folks down in Batavia, IL make some outstanding clubs. We came away quite impressed by both the Exotics CB2 fairway wood and the Bazooka GeoMax driver in reviews last year.

Keeping with that tradition, the Exotics line has added two new drivers for 2008, the XCG and the XLD. Sporting some fancy technology, these two new drivers should be on everyone’s demo list. Unless of course, you have something against hitting the ball far.
