Volume Fifty-Eight

Volume Fifty-Eight of this fine weekly article.

Hittin' The LinksThis week, I’ve wrangled up a hodgepodge of links from topics ranging from John Daly’s book to the passing of Earl Woods and grass that doesn’t need to be cut. Although the topics seem random, they all share one thing in common: they’re worth a look. So let’s get started…

Hole 1: Earl Woods
After a long and hard-fought battle against prostate cancer, the man who helped shape the world’s greatest golfer has passed away. This story has been heavily reported over the last few days and the only reason I’m reposting it here is because this specific report boasts an interesting perspective and is worth at least a glance if not a read. [Link]

Hole 2: An Interview with Earl
This interview was in the February 2004 issue of Golf Digest and offers a view we rarely get into how Tiger was raised. Caught my attention and its worth taking a look at. [Link]

Hole 3: No-Mow Grass
A thread about this strain of grass was posted in the forums and I thought it was noteworthy. There’s nothing like a freshly cut fairway, but grass is ingrained into this game and an advancement in agriculture is an advancement in golf. [Link]

Hole 4: Continually Updated Golf Photos
This page is updated rather frequently with candid golf photos from pro events around the world. These photos aren’t the normal picture-perfect action shots normally seen, they’re a little rough around the edges but they’re fun to look at. [Link]

Hole 5: Big Money Hustlers
My friends and I play $5 nassaus, you know, just to keep things intersting. These guys play for $10,000 holes. Thats a hell of a lot of money. Nice insight into the lives of the super-rich and the crazy-cocky. [Link]

Hole 6: John Daly’s AutoBiography
Another high-rotation news topic lately has been Big John’s ridiculous gambling habit. He’s always been golf’s bad boy, but its a shame what he’s wasted. The book is supposed to be a good read. [Link]

Hole 7: EDS Byron Nelson
Next week, the PGA Tour stops at the TPC Four Seasons for the EDS Byron Nelson, the event in which Tiger missed the cut last year. The course is an interesting array of both long and short holes. If it can take down Tiger, its sure to produce some drama this week. [Link]

Hole 8: A New Phil
Gone is the Phil of old. The Phil that made bad course-management decisions, the Phil that four-putted, the Phil that choked. Phil 2.0 is more than capable of winning majors, he plays with a level head and confidence. He knows he can get the job done. This is a worthwhile article on the new Phil. [Link]

Hole 9: Ermenegildo Zegna
The search for a fine pair of golf pants has led me to one man. Ermenegildo Zegna. As funny as his name is, there’s nothing funny about his trousers, they’re as fine as they get. Numerous touring pros sport his duds, known for their excellent thread count and superiour build-quality. Its a shame they cost a million dollars. [Link]
