Ask golf fans which professional has had the greatest fall from greatness and immediately names such as Duval, Beem, or Micheel come to mind. However, few people remember the name Ian Baker-Finch. Although it was only fourteen years ago that Baker-Finch hoisted the Claret Jug high over his head, it might has well been a century ago. After Baker-Finch won the Open title at Royal Birkdale in 1991, he attempted to re-tool his swing which lead to him losing confidence. In an interview in the January 2005 issue of Golf Digest, Baker-Finch described the frustration of playing well in practice rounds, but during competition simply hitting snap hooks off the tee and duffing chips on the green. These problems forced Baker-Finch to leave competitive golf and take up a career as a commentator on the ABC sports team.
However, it now appears that the Australian is preparing for a comeback. In a story on the PGA’s website Baker Finch says, “I’d like to play some events on tour, the smaller events, or maybe the Colonial or a Nationwide Tour event or a couple back in Australia. When I get to 50, I’d like to really try to compete on the Champions Tour.” Although he realizes he may never win another major, Baker-Finch has not lost perspective on his accomplishments, “I had a time when I played well. I’m a has-been, but I’m not a never-was. At least I had my moment in the sun.”
Ian Baker-Finch Contemplates Return
After eight years away from competition, Ian Baker Finch is considering a return to competitive golf.
Really hope to see Finchie play the tour again.
What a great player he was, lets hope he can produce some great golf again.
We should set up the Finchie Fan Club!!
I met Ian Baker-Finch yesterday in the Merrill Lynch Shark Shoot out in Naples Fl. yesterday. He came over and spoke with us about his job with CBS. He was a true gentleman with a great personality. He should continue to do very well in broadcasting. A true class act.
I watched Ian hitting balls today on the practice range at the Merrill Lynch Shootout. He was hitting the ball every bit as good as the players in the tournament! I believe he’d do extremely well if he would get back into competition. A formidable player is coming to the Senior Tour in a couple years if he chooses that route.
All the best to him.
