Hole in One Registry

You can register and view holes-in-one across the country at PGA.com.

If you took dead aim and recorded a hole-in-one, you can register your ace at PGA.com and bask in your own glory. Enter your details for the world to see, or poke fun at. For example, this fine lady used her trusty driver to conquer the monstrous sixty-yard par 3 in 2001.

Ahh, who am I kidding. I’m just annoyed that Tiger bagged his first ace when he was six, and I’m still hoping.

Duval Has Best Round of the Year

David and Bob Duval team up with Special Olympics athletes Kevin Erickson and Oliver Doherty in a made-for-TV match.

david_duval.jpgDavid Duval and father, Bob Duval, played golf at the Timuquana Country Club with Special Olympics athletes Kevin Erickson of Wisconsin and Oliver Doherty of Ireland in a made-for-TV match called “A Tee Time Like No Other” to be televised by CBS Sports on New Year’s Day. The match was set up by the Special Olympics, who wanted to feature some of their finest athletes.

During the first hole of the made-for-TV match, that paired David with Kevin and Bob with Oliver, Erickson hit a slight draw and landed in the middle of the fairway. Duval hit a slice into the trees. “At least one of us is in the fairway,” Erickson told him. Duval shot right back, “Fairways are overrated.”

Pine Valley

Ro lives near Pine Valley, but will never have the pleasure of playing it.

It’s hard to fathom sometimes that I reside within a twenty mile radius of Pine Valley Golf Club, the perennial #1 golf course in America. It’s actually quite maddening because, even though it is seemingly right around the corner, I most likely will never have the pleasure of staring down Hell’s Half Acre in person. Sure I can play a similar course across the street, but it’s not the same.

A chauvinistic smirk emerged on my face reading this blurb: “While Augusta National allows women to play, Pine Valley doesn’t even let women on the property” until I realized that, 99.99% of all males, including myself are in the same boat.

Maybe I’ll picket…

Perfectly Annoying

Peter Kessler and his Perfect Club, a thirty second bit of garbage that seems to run at every stinkin’ commercial break on The Golf Channel.

Peter KesslerAfter a long day at work, I like to unwind by plopping down on the old leather couch and flipping on The Golf Channel. There’s no better calming effect than watching some high quality golf programming, preferably featuring Kelly Tilghman.

However, in the midst of this relaxation, there is a thirty second bit of garbage that seems to run at every stinkin’ commercial break. Peter Kessler and his Perfect Club. These grating spots generally consist of seemingly ordinary hackers, knocking a 210-yard shot stiff. Very believable… hrm. In his smarmy tone, Kessler tells us we can’t live without this wonder equipment.

After seeing the commercial for the 5th time in the past hour, I think I might order one and smash my TV with it.

Isabelle Beisiegel Fails PGA Tour Qualifier

Coming in last among those who played all four rounds, Isabelle Beisiegel fails PGA Q-school.

Isabelle BeisiegelIsabelle Beisiegel failed to qualify for the PGA Tour this weekend at the Greg Norman Course at PGA West in La Quinta, CA. Beisiegel shot rounds of 84, 80, 80 and 79 for a 35-over-par 323 which placed her last among 78 golfers playing all four rounds. Seven golfers withdrew from the tournament.

After her relatively poor performance, however, Isabelle was disappointed, but not discouraged. “The biggest thing I am going to take away from this week is that strength and length were not a factor,” she said. “I already knew that, but now I have proof.”

Beisiegel, a native of Canada who played golf at the University of Oklahoma, said failing to qualify this year won’t stop her from trying the process next year or trying some one-day qualifying events for PGA Tour stops in 2005.

Awareness and Creativity

Good players use creativity and awareness of the situation to their advantage on the course.

I was late in watching The Big Break II on the Golf Channel again this week. These baseball playoff games lasting until midnight and later are killing me and my regular viewing schedule. Anyhow, I wanted to note something about this week’s competition. My absolute favorite challenge so far in this whole series was the elimination challenge from this episode.

The Never Ending Season

Ernie Els is upset with Tim Finchem over the “never-ending PGA Tour season.”

A good read over at GolfToday concerning the never-ending PGA Tour “season.” A juicy little tidbit from the article reports how the Tour office sent Ernie Els a letter imploring him to cease his globetrotting ways. Needless to say, The Big Easy is pretty pissed off about it.

Way to alienate one of your top draws Finchem.

Isabelle Beisiegel To Try PGA Q-School

Isabelle Beisiegel will attempt to qualify for the PGA Tour.

Isabelle BeisiegelAfter just one season on the LPGA tour, Isabelle Beisiegel is ready to try the PGA tour. She has paid the $4,500 entry fee for the PGA Tour qualifying tournament that starts October 19th on the Greg Norman course at PGA West in La Quinta, CA.

Don’t get your hopes up, however. Isabelle tried to qualify for both the Nissan Open and the Buick Invitational this year, but didn’t even come close.

HSBC World Matchplay – Round up

Ernie Els wins his 6th HSBC World Match Play Championship, along with the £1 million prize cheque on his 35th birthday.

Els with trophyErnie Els continued his amazing record in the HSBC World Match Play Championship with his 6th victory in the event. He beat Lee Westwood in the 36-hole final by 2&1, and in doing so eclipsed the record of five wins in the event previously held by himself, Seve Ballesteros and Gary Player.

Neither Els nor Westwood played their best golf in the final, but both players contributed to a tense and exciting match; such is the beauty of match play. Two down playing the 33rd hole, Westwood stiffed his approach shot to move within one of Els, but three-putt bogeyed the next to hand the advantage back to the South African. Els closed out the match in now typical fashion, holing a 15 footer to halve the 35th hole and take the match.

For the first in the event’s history, the losing semi-finalists did not play off for 3rd and 4th places. Instead, the players were separated by a bad haircut competition, Jiménez’s curly mullet narrowly beating Harrington’s dodgy bleach.
