Off-Season Fitness

Working out over the off-season doesn’t have to be bore. Make a plan and stick with it before your treadmill becomes a clothes rack.

As I continue through my off-season plan (which you can read here and here), one aspect that I have tried to work on is a more golf specific fitness plan. Not the “I made a resolution to workout, blah, blah, blah” plan, but to actually incorporate exercises that will help ingrain better muscle memory for my golf swing, increase flexibility, and prevent me from losing any time during my golf season due to injury.

I also have another motivating factor which is purely selfish as I want to be one of the first men not to gain any “sympathy weight” during my wife’s pregnancy.

Maybe Tiger was thinking whether or not his tournament should be an invitational or full field event.

Hittin' the LinksWell, my brackets destroyed and my favorite team was sent packing on Sunday but that was nothing compared to Tiger Woods’ meltdown in the final round at Arnie’s party.

This week we have a recap of the Arnold Palmer Invitational presented by MasterCard, the true cost of sportsmanship, and a little advice for tournament directors looking to get Tiger Woods to play their event.

This week we have PODS, grapes and bobcats, oh my!

Health Slocum’s last putt of the day lipped out in his attempt to force a playoff and Mark Calcavecchia walked off with a victory at the PODS Championship (after missing a short one of his own to even give Slocum a chance).

This week we have a recap of The PODS Championship, more commentary on the grooves controversy, wine making, and a playing partner you shouldn’t anger.

It’s a Monday finish on the PGA Tour (Mark Wilson wins). Also, Ernie Els a Callaway Boy now? John Daly injured by a camera’s click? What’s going on here???

Boo Weekly missed a three-foot putt on the final hole at The Honda Classic on Sunday to blow an opportunity to win his first PGA Tour event. The Golf Channel aired coverage this morning at 8:30, and by 9:00 it was obvious Boo wouldn’t redeem himself.

This week we have a recap of The Honda Classic, the greatest streak ever, and a story about a tennis pro turned golfer that is truly unbelievable.

This week we review the Accenture Match Play, Cancun, eBay and a Wikipedia entry worthy of a lawsuit.

Henrick Stenson and Geoff Ogilvy battled it out for match play supremacy over the weekend. I’m betting NBC wasn’t too happy with that lineup.

This week we have a recap of the Accenture Match Play, the PGA Tour in Cancun, a chance to own one of “Tiger’s putters” and Fuzzy Zoeller shoots one across the bow of Wikipedia.

The demons of Winged Foot or just a freakish drive? You decide.

Well, that was quite an exciting bit of action on Sunday as one of the PGA Tour’s young guns pulled the victory rug right out under old Philly (nice drives on 18, buddy). Could we have a new challenger to Tiger? Ha, just joking.

This week we have a recap of the Nissan Open, the return of the LPGA, the new Wandering Golfer, and some visual help for you rules aficionados.

Volume Eighty-Five

This week we have a Phil sighting, the Pink Panther at Hooters and the end of funky scoring system known as the Stableford.

Hey, a Phil Mickelson sighting! Phil got to hoist a trophy and accept a large cardboard check this weekend! Has he excised the demons of the final hole of the 2006 U.S. Open?

This week we have a recap of the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am, Wie’s bad break, and death of the Stableford scoring system on the PGA Tour.

Volume Eighty-Four

Sharon Stone will want to cross her legs for this week’s Hittin’ the Links.

Football season is officially over until next fall (or until training camps start in, what, April? Oh, and the draft… and college recruiting, and…) and now we can put our full attention to the world of golf.

This week we have a recap of the FBR Open, Sharon Stone’s golf game, and proof that Tiger is human after all.

Training Aids

You may be tempted to pick up the latest hot training aid to work on your golf game over the winter months however sometimes the best idea is sound advice and equipment you already have.

As I continue with building my off-season plan, I have been looking at various training aids that I can use during the winter months to help me build a more consistent, repeatable swing. I also figure I’ll be able to get off to a fast start once the snow melts.

As with the rest of the golf equipment industry, training aids have exploded over the last few years and it was a bit maddening to sift through all the various kinds and styles. It seems as if everyone has an idea that will help you correct your slice, find the “slot,” or help you gain twenty yards. After spending a few months looking over the multitude of options, I think I found a few that will help me accomplish my goals.
