Potential Callaway Buyout

A proposal has been in the works for a Callaway buyout since May 20th. No word yet on the outcome.

The buyout firm Thomas H. Lee Partners and insurance mogul William Foley II submitted a $1.2 billion cash buyout proposal to Callaway’s board May 20th. According to the Los Angeles Times Callaway’s top executive team were all unanimous in their approval of the bid but there appears to dissenting views from some on the board. One faction of the board is proposing the replacement of William Baker, Callaway’s chairman and chief executive with another board member, Anthony Thornley. Baker is reportedly in favor of the bid.

CNN reports that Callaway stock is up 13 percent today upon news of the potential buyout.

UPDATE: My recently informed opinion is that going private by accepting this deal, or one just like it, would be a big step in the right direction for Callaway. The only thing holding them back at this point are board members unwilling to break from the status quo for the good of the company.

Rockin’ Chicks and a New PGATour.com

The PGA Tour gets a re-made website, and LPGA players leap onto your desktop. How can final-round action at the U.S. Open possibly hope to compare with this news!?

Paula Creamer WallpaperTwo quick tidbits today. First, thanks to BogeyLounge for pointing out these LPGA Tour desktop pictures. The LPGA Tour, as fourteen people (or fewer) know, has a new PR campaign. The catch phrase: “These Girls Rock.” Funny how far “rock” has come in its own evolution, as golf is probably the last sport to “rock,” but there you have it. Grab some desktops of your favorite LPGA Tour players in 800 x 600, 1024 x 768, and 1280 x 1024. I guess I’m out of luck (1920 x 1200).

Next, there’s a new pgatour.com out there, and the new design “will take you inside the ropes and alongside your favorite players. PGATOUR.COM’s focus on the sport of golf, players and competition will be unparalleled by any other site.” Or something like that… The new PGATour.com does feature in-depth statistics, including ShotLink statistics. More information is available here or, you know, at pgatour.com.

Father’s Day Ideas

Need some golf-related ideas for a Father’s Day gift? We put together a quick list of some bargains and other golf related products.

Father's Day is almost here! For once in my life, I’ve remembered Father’s Day (Sunday, June 19) far enough in advance that I can get my dad something nice. Normally, my dad get’s a phone call on that day, nothing more because I never actually remember it being Father’s Day. The same thing happens to my mom, so it’s not like I’m picking favorites or anything. Since my dad is a huge golfer, I decided that I’d find something golf related for him. Surely, he’ll enjoy that, he’s the one that taught me the game.

Since I like to get the most for my money, I started doing some research. Here’s some ideas I came up with for my father. If nothing more, take this as a reminder that Father’s Day is rapidly approaching.

Women’s Golf Week Comes to Town

Women’s Golf Week starts June 4 and will give women the opportunity to get into the game of golf.

Women's Golf WeekI once heard that golf was a 4-letter acronym. It stood for Gentlemen Only, Ladies Forbidden. Being a golfer myself and having worked in the industry since I was 15 I can tell you this isn’t true. However, many women who have never played before might fall prey to the idea that golf is a man’s world. Thankfully, people like Annika Sorenstam and Michelle Wie are helping to turn this stereotype around. There are not alone in their quest to prove that golf is a gender-neutral sport. Women’s Golf Week, a Play Golf America initiative, is also dedicated to getting women involved in the sport.

A Golden Finish for the Golden Bear

Jack Nicklaus will be playing his final competitive round at the British Open at St. Andrews.

Jack NicklausIt seems only fitting that Jack Nicklaus to end his competitive golfing career at the famed St. Andrews, the birthplace of golf. The Golden Bear let the media know today that he was planning on bowing out after the British Open in July. The last time he played The Open Championship was in 2000 when it was also held at the Royal and Ancient Golf Club at St. Andrews. He had hinted that he was winding down earlier this year at The Masters, when he referred to the fact he just wasn’t competitive anymore. Why did he choose St. Andrews for his final tournament? “I love St. Andrews. It’s been a great part of my career.”

Golf Cart Safety

Ever think you could get hurt driving a golf cart? Me either, but here’s a true story of how Paul fractured his foot doing just that.

Golf Cart Safety WarningThis is a Public Service Announcement to prevent injuries while riding in a golf cart. This really happened on a golf course.

(To protect the individual I’m referencing, I have substituted the name to prevent further embarassment to this individual.)

U.S. Open Qualifying

U.S. Open qualifiers take place in Japan on Memorial Day and in England on D-Day. Intentional? Nah. Funny? Sure!

ESPN proudly presents this “Did You Know…”

Did you know… that a U.S. Open qualifier will be held in Japan on Memorial Day (May 30) and in England on D-Day (June 6).

“That was not by design,” USGA Executive Director David Fay said with a laugh. Intentional? No. Somewhat amusing? You bet!

Elin is a Twin

Elin Nordegren is one of a pair of identical twins. Yes, you read that correctly.

For those who do not know, yes, Elin Nordegren-Woods, wife of the best golfer in the world (at least currently), is one of a pair of twins. I’ll wait while you think about that…

Elin and hew twin sister Josephin (or Josefin) Nordegren grew up in Waxholm (a coastal town outside Stockholm). Tiger met Elin while both were serving as nannies for Swedish golf pro Jesper Parnevik.

And yes, they’re identical twins. I’ll wait again while you think about that some more.

To further help you comprehend what we’re sure could be a mind-blowing revelation, we here at The Sand Trap have taken the time to construct a little guide.

Titleist (Acushnet) Going Strong

Titleist, FootJoy, and Cobra continue the upward climb in a downward-falling golf economy.

TitleistWhile many golf manufacturers are stuck in decline, The Acushnet Company – parent to Titleist, FootJoy, Cobra, and Pinnacle – is going strong. The company started this year with net sales of $342.6 million, an increase of $3.7 milllion from a year ago. The golf divsion reported operating income of $56.7 million, a jump of $6.7 million from last year. The numbers indicate that Acushnet is doing quite well in the slightly downturned golf economy, not only boosting its bottom line but improving its efficiency.

The company’s first quarter is exciting, particularly when the company had trouble getting new Titleist equipment (905 drivers, 904 fairway woods, new putters, new spin-milled wedges, new balls) out the door before the end of the quarter.
