Tiger Woods announced today on tigerwoods.com that early on June 18, his wife Elin gave birth to the couple’s first child. They’ve named the girl Sam Alexis Woods and Elin and the baby are resting comfortably.
Tiger has said previously he may not play in the British Open as the due date was reportedly around July 10. If accurate, Sam arrived three weeks early. We hope all is well, and on a selfish note, we hope Tiger will play at Carnoustie in a month.
Alright, let’s analyze — it’s a given that Elin would have been watching the final round. Thus,
* Did Tiger’s final round play cause her to go into labor?
* Did they induce on purpose given that Tiger is in a lull period between majors?
* Was it simply mother nature taking it’s course?
* And finally, was she in labor on Sunday, and did Tiger know that as he played the last 18?
The answers to your questions based on what I know: maybe, unlikely but possible, perhaps – three weeks isn’t that early, and no, she wasn’t.

Well he should at the positives of missing all those opportunities on sunday..if he had tied with Cabrera, he would have had to play the playoff while Elin was having Sam…
First time moms usually have fairly long labors, sometimes with the whole process beginning more than a day before actual delivery. I wonder if she was starting before he finished the open?
I assume she stayed in Florida and had the baby down there?
Tiger stuck around Oakmont until 8:15 or so, then didn’t leave the Pittsburgh area (on his plane) until 10:30. If she had been in labor, he’d have booked it out of there.
The real question is whether they induced or not so that Tiger could play the British easily. I don’t believe he’d have done so, but three weeks early isn’t too bad.
Inducing labor for no reason other than convenience would be a very foolish thing to do, particularly before term, even fairly close to term. I cannot imagine an ethical gyn doing this. Induction by nature is elective, but there are usually some medical reasons for doing it, boiling down to some degree of risk posed to mom or baby by waiting.
They say Faldo did this. Perhaps, but I’m sure there must have been some sort of medical justification. Maybe the timing of the induction was decided with an eye toward his golf schedule, but the decision to do it reqhad to have been medically based.
As Erik implied, 37 weeks is not unusual for a spontaneous delivery.
