I don't know why RandallT thinks my post is `audacious'. It doesn't matter how long things have been as they are, there is a reason for them being that way and since I have not been able to find the answer, I posted the question. I am new to SandTrap and I didn't expect to get an abusive reply to my first post. Good enough reason for me to withdraw.

Why are the numbers on the sole of woods read facing the heel and the numbers on irons facing the toe? I guess historically, the irons hang in the bag with the toe down but woods are put in with the heads away from the irons to avoid damage. Any thoughts?
