RedCallaway,
Right now there are several good previous year model sets out there at great prices. I purchased a set of Callaway X-20 irons 4-PW,SW for well under $300 for my son at my local GolfUSA store for this past Xmas, and I knew he would be standard length so they stated they would adjust the lie if needed for free. Alot of the big online places like TGW.com, golfgalaxy, edwinwatts and golfsmith have good discounts on those irons and other previous year model irons. If possible, you should go to a demo days and hit several different brands and then get fit for the ones that you like the most and that fall within your budget. If there isnt a demo days in your area your local dealer will typically let you demo different brands so you can get a feel for what you like. I think you should easily be able to get a set of good quality brand new irons for under $300 and a good putter for around $100 - $150. My best advice would be try before you buy, if possible.
