Shanshan, in front of an enormous home crowd that was rooting her on, eagled the final hole to win by one stroke over Stacy Lewis. Saturday, September 21, 2013Rolex Rankings Movers of the Year 2013 - Part 2 While we wait for the LPGA to return from a two week break, it gives us some time to step back and discuss some of the other things going on in the golf world. For some interesting news on Lydia Ko, I suggest you check out Ruthless Golf, and for a preview of this weekend's JLPGA tournament I would check out Mostly Harmless. Now that we have completed about 3/4 of the LPGA season, I would like to look at the players that have made the biggest leaps, and taken the biggest falls in the Rolex Rankings this year. The Rolex Rankings system awards points to players based on an accumulated 104-week "rolling" period, with the points awarded in the most recent 13-week period carrying a stronger value. A player is then ranked according to her average points per tournament, as determined by dividing her total number of points by the number of eligible tournaments played during the 104-week period. A minimum divisor (35) is also used. I have gone back to the first Rolex Rankings of the year and compared them to the current rankings. The LPGA is taking a 2 week break before starting its Asian swing. That part of the tour will be taking us to China, Malaysia, Korea, Taiwan, and Japan. The 2013 tour will then conclude with tournaments in Mexico and Florida. We are just a few days away from the playing of the Solheim Cup, which will be held in Parker Colorado. The U.S. team will be trying to take back the cup they lost in 2011 by a 15-13 score. Let me start by saying congratulations to Stacy Lewis for winning the 2013 Ricoh British Open, played on the Old Course at St. Andrews. Stacy birdied the final 2 holes to win by 2 strokes over Na Yeon Choi and Hee Young Park. Choi, who had a 3 stroke lead on the back nine, bogeyed 3 of the last 6 holes. Stacy's approach shot on the 17th hole, which set up her birdie, will be remembered for a very long time. After the tournament Stacy would say that it was the best shot of her life. Considering the circumstances, I couldn't agree more. My wife & I arrived in St. Andrews on the Sunday morning before the tournament. We decided to check out the golf course about 9:30 PM that night. We parked our car and walked onto the "Old Course". I was surprised to see that there was no security and that anyone could walk onto what I consider the most beautiful golf course I have ever seen. I walked behind the 18th green and looked out at the fairway. I pictured Jack Nicklaus walking up to the green to a standing ovation. I could never explain the feeling I got standing there. You would have to experience it yourself. I do know that many of the people I spoke to there, got that very same feeling. Trying to describe this incredible place, and the village that is within walking distance, would be impossible. The LPGA moves to Scotland next week for the playing of the Ricoh Women's British Open. This will be the fourth of five majors on the 2013 schedule. Inbee Park has captured the first 3 majors so far this year, and will be trying to make history by winning number four. This tournament also has added importance, as it is the last chance for those players on the bubble of making the Solheim Cup team to step up and earn their spot. Captain Meg Mallon will also announce her 2 captains' picks at the completion of play. This will be tournament #18 of 28 on the LPGA schedule this year. Just returned from Marathon Classic in Sylvania Ohio. As has been the case in just about every tournament this year, it went down to the very final shot. Beatriz Recari sank her four foot par put on the 72nd hole to come out victorious by one shot over Paula Creamer. I followed the final group, which also including Lexi Thompson, and was treated to some of the finest golf you will see on any tour.
