Personally it depends. I have noticed lately that to get alot of check/backspin you can do this by waiting til the top to then let the wrists kind of flop at the last second while then starting the downswing, this kind of compresses the wrist angle and whips the club through... But make sure your grip is also looser than normal.

Tips to help me get hips more involved in downswing
Joehuggy replied to Blitz28179's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
I would say also besides tucking your right elbow from the top, ensure your arms are positioned tightly into the chest and keep this feeling for the left arm the whole time. This helps make the arms and body one unit. Then use that double pendulum/wrist to really whip at the bottom. But try a few ideas, your bound to browse over things and miss what they actually mean because these are words and we are looking for an experience, trial and error and patience, you can do it if you really put your mind to it. Good Luck -
Tips to help me get hips more involved in downswing

Hi Chris Can you recommend any books/reading material of this sort which deals with everything you have mentioned here, i am very interested in what you have mentioned here -
From 250yard carry to a 275 yard carry with one change
Joehuggy replied to Joehuggy's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
Yes but what really gives you the power is the way you actually get more behind the ball with this tucking/syncing of the right elbow with the body. It's almost asif you are now using muscles which are much more powerful and haven't been used before. So this tucking makes your legs move forward but your top half comes backwards creating this angle of attack which is also guna give you less spin Watch Lee Westwood for a good idea of this move, but they all do this, look at how Rory tucks his right elbow in on his drives -
From 250yard carry to a 275 yard carry with one change
Joehuggy replied to Joehuggy's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
I actually this explains why I was loosing power towards the longer clubs, because with short irons this tucking happens naturally. So anyone who hit's their 9 iron 150 but there driver only 240-250... this could be your issue -
Hi all I have been posting on here whining on about how I can't find that extra distance, well, after another disappointing round last night I came home and did my usual search on the internet for ideas to try and found a video explaining how you can gain 30-40 yards by just tucking your right elbow into your body on the downswing and kind of syncing it with your body. This seems to give the control needed to enable the body to really fire through at MAX. So I have just been up to the local course on a flat par 4 to try this out, and when I kept my arms and hands soft and did this tucking, then fired the body through I caught one measured on google earth at 276yards... On a cold day and I can guarantee that with how the ground is so wet that that ball didn't roll more than 5-6 yards. So thought I'd share with you my success, I don't think I can believe it myself yet haha The hang time on that baby was AWESOME... I was starring at it thinking, shit, this things not coming down.

I've noticed from watching pros that rather than being a definate strike at the ball, the rhythm finds a small pause or slowdown, almost as if we have a rhythm going of 1 .. 2 .. 3 .. 4 1 being the start of the swing, 3 the top and 4 the strike, but Pro rhythm being more like 1 .. 2 .. 3 .. 4 . 4.5 4.5, being the contact with the ball or the release of the trailing clubhead.

You mention having something else wrong, I think my swing is sound, BUT I have a real problem with distance, I know that I am slightly below Pro average for swing speed (90mph 6-iron tested at American Golf) and this is ok, but it's got to the point where I just need to get more distance, OR deal with the reasons why I let this bother me so much... But when I am in this state of mind where I just hate myself for feeling like I can't get that 270 carry and hence I go into a kind of self destruct mode where my swing goes to shit because I am trying to kill it, it feels like to just swing easy is risking failure, because I know what I need to do, but seeing no improvement when I do get my head straight and fire all my body in sync then gets me pissed again... I think it is a combination of impatience wanting immediate results and not being fully in control of my ego...
-
So as thought I must be coming out of sync whenever I try and really go at the ball with the driver... So if I want to get from a 250 carry to a 270 carry, I should maybe? first get my rhythm sorted with the driver with the hip firing at the right moment, and also getting a more consistent contact? Then once this is good and proper, try other things to add distance while keeping this rhythm solid? It's hard to get the instinct of really hitting hard out of your mind, maybe some meditative techniques could help this lol

I think I'm starting to 'get' Lag ???
Joehuggy replied to Joehuggy's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
made some more progress working on weight shift, when I get the shift right the lag kicks in, aslong as my arms, grip and wrists are loose.. The first move from the top of the backswing needs to be this weight shift, which then automatically transforms into hip turn, and the arms are just along for the ride :) just need to do some trial and error and hopefully I will start getting a few more yards off the tee, still only using a sandwedge at this stage. -
the ego reacts to it, you're not your ego... but maybe this is the wrong forum for this type of talk

I think I'm starting to 'get' Lag ???
Joehuggy replied to Joehuggy's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
I don't seem to be getting more distance yet with my driver, it seems wrong that I can hit my 9 iron 150, 5 iron 200 but my driver only 250... -
I think I'm starting to 'get' Lag ???
Joehuggy replied to Joehuggy's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
awesome tip I'm guna try this today at the range, I like the idea of the pressure building on the downswing... I think I also am doing the same in regards to reaching top speed before impact because it has a real feel of loss of power, it's a hopeless feeling, but when I got a few shots going with the lag I could hit it just as far as my best shots but feeling like I had a whole lot more gas left in the tank. Thanks -
I think I'm starting to 'get' Lag ???
Joehuggy replied to Joehuggy's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
I just found 2 really good videos which explains it perfectly, wish I had of found these a few months ago -
Hey just got back from the range, it's ironic that I make most breakthroughs with my sand wedge on the range in terms of getting more swing speed but I think my body suddenly started to understand lag. I first tried to feel like my left arm was totally inert, like it was just attached to my shoulder and that my wrist was just a loose hinge then at the top of my back spin my arm started to reach the peak, then drop down with the weight of the sandwedge, this creating a rhymic lag/whipping swing, when I got this right, the balls were carrying about 15 yards further. So I tried it with my driver but I couldn't replicate entirely the same feeling, I think I did somewhat, but the fact that the driver is light means it doesn't drop so easily at the top... Does this sound like lag to you guys? Is anyone else familiar with what progress I seem to be making... I'm really buzzed because maybe now I am on the right track towards getting some more distance off the tee Would love to hear any similar stories that you guys have experienced in the evolution of your golf swings.

I am 27 years old, decent swing, the only thing wrong I believe is I could do with more lag/wrist action. I hit a few great shots when I was focusing on keeping my left arm straight and letting my wrist go loose at the top and I really caught them nicely... I usualy hit my 9-iron about 150yards. But the practice range is only 180 yards diagonal so I can not hit my driver on there and when I get on the course I struggle to replecate the correct swing to enable me to hit these really laggy shots... I was only able to catch them right a couple of times on the practice like I said. should I keep practicing this on the practice ground with my 9-iron/wedges and then maybe try hit a few of the tee on some of the flat par 4's for practice.. I have been so pissed with not being able to break 250-260 with my driver for years, I mean it feels like I crush it when I get these distances on the course... But surely if I can replicate the swing that hit my 9-iron 165 with that same lag feeling/ relaxed wrist thing, surely I will be hitting it closer to 280?? any advice on practice techniques here? I seem to get really bored fast on the practice, I loose concentration and I will start hitting shanks... I play off about 5 handicap but this shot creeps its way in when I loose focus on the range. I have been having a little bit of success by constantly changing swing thoughts every couple of balls... for instance I will hit a couple thinking keep my left arm straight, then the next few thinking keep my head straight, then onwards... Then hopefully all these things will become engrained more. I guess I need to find a way to practice that suits me, anyone else know what I mean about this? thanks for reading

So I think what I should do is establish this technique, practice until I can hit it every time... I was hitting the 9-iron 145-150 with a very easy relaxed swing.. So I need to increase speed within the constraints of this nice rhythm, everything needs to be the same apart from a faster rhythm, this should also, as I increase steadily, give me extra lag. I think working on lag is not the way to go, just keep your shoulders and arms and wrists and grip light, and relaxed throughout the entire swing, let your body drive the swing and the lag will lag naturally. This using the body more rather than arms is strange at first, it takes patience and willingness to hit bad shots without getting too down on yourself, just be patient and work at it, work at the practice, swing in the mirror at home, look at videos of pro swings. I think I am starting to get it, it's all sinking in !!!

Just been to the practice and went through a spell of striking the ball very well. I was concentrating on keeping my left wrist straight at the top and relaxing my arms and shoulders more, and keeping them this way throughout the swing seems to work best, just relaxing them at the start is not good enough. I was only hitting a 9-iron but I get the feeling now that this is the direction I should be heading. Like I said, I couldn't hit every shot like this but when I did, it felt good..
