  1. Sounds like the guy at the store doesn't know what he is talking about. Being that you are new, getting something YOU feel confident with is half the battle. I'm a single digit handicap (9) and I have the x-20s. I used to be a 3 but I haven't played for 10 years. I got the 735 titleists last year, but I couldn't hit them consistenly. The x-20s are a huge improvement. I don't like to shape the ball anyway, so for me and a natural 'straight' ball flight, these are perfect and I can't see switching them even if I get back to a 3 or 4. The are very forgiving, you will hit them longer then the other clubs you mentioned. Go buy them somewhere else and get fitted... having the proper shafts and lie angles are just as important as the club heads attached to them.
  2. First of all, if you are using a set that old, you should really do some more homework and get fitted. There have been insane amounts of innovation in clubs in the last 5 years, let alone the last 25. There is a reason most companies are dropping long irons... they are going to become like dinosaurs... extinct. If you get properly fitted for irons, it almost won't matter which specific irons you get. Getting the right shaft is almost as important as the club attached to it, but you won't know what is the 'right' shaft unless you are fitted by a pro. Same thing with lie angles... one degree off is not great, 2 degrees can be terrible for you. If you are more then a 15 handicap, and your swing speed isn't super fast, you almost certainly have no business carrying a 3 iron, and possibly a 4 iron too. Even if you think you hit these clubs well, it is almost inconceivable you won't hit a hybrid much better. A fitting is really worth it. If you try it, I can promise you'll agree.
  3. I just got the x-20s and I've played 5 rounds with them. I LOVE them!!! I used to be a 4 handicap, but I'm returning to golf after 10 years away. I'm now around a 9 or 10. I got the Titleist 735s last year, but they were too hard to hit well consistently. I played the x-20s while on vacation as rental clubs and I love them. I have a pretty high swing speed so I have 6.5 stiff steel shafts. My 9 iron carry distance is about 143 yards. The sweet spot is so large on this club, I don't find that I often hit the 'jumper' shot that is 10+ yards longers when you really get it on the screws.... rather when you really toe or heel one, you can't feel it as much, but your ball flight is much better then a gross mishead with a perimeter weighted club.
