After three boys I am scheduled for a vasectomy this friday. With my new found obsession with golf and not playing great I was curious if anyone out there had any tips as to when to get back to swinging. I would think putting and light chipping would come pretty soon but maybe im wrong.? If you have had a vasectomy how long did you wait to play a round??

I wish I had something useful to say but I wish my swing looked like that!

difference between iron and driver
blaylock6502 replied to blaylock6502's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
Im in the same boat! I think what I will concentrate on for now is pulling through with my left hand (this somehow also seems to encourage starting with my hips) with a driver and concentrate on contacting the ball with a flat left wrist with my irons. That seems to work for now at least! Thanks again! -
difference between iron and driver

Thanks alot guys! Trying to figure these things out has been the most enjoyable thing I have ever done (as far as hobbies and sports go). I know the best round ive played as far as irons go the only thing that ever went through my mind was making solid contact and let the rest of the chips fall where they may and maybe ill go back to that! I think the more I try to correct things the tighter things get and the worse the results! The statement about great results at first could not be more true! I have fixed the slice with my driver four or five times only to have it return in a few days. And everytime something different seems to fix it! Maybe its just the favt I am concentrating on one thing and let the others happen naturally! Thanks again guys! -
I have been working on my driver swing a lot lately and have ran into some issues. My iron swing although not technically perfect was repeatable and straight but I had a slice with my driver. The driver is starting to come around since I have made a few changes. I relaxed my grip and wrists slightly and tried to concentrate on starting with the hips and pulling the club more with my left hand vs pushing with my right. The problem is I picked up my lob wedge after a couple of days and now I am hitting everything way right and topping badly! Any ideas? Should I tighten my grip back up and stiffen my wrists more with an iron? Thanks in advance for any input!!!

Adding lag- good or bad for s beginner?
blaylock6502 replied to blaylock6502's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
Distance is the farthest thing from my mind this point. If I could hit the ball straight 150 yards every time I would be happy. I am more concerned about building a sound and repeatable swing! -

Also guilty of that! :) That is one of the things I have been working on-letting the first move out of the top of my swing be a gravity move and pulling through with my left hand rather than push with the right. This seems to be helping more than anything else. -

So it starts in the hips and let everything else follow in an upward sequence? Everything should be in line with the target at impact right? -

Would this be enough for you to consider a different coach? Maybe he is used to working with people with more experience but it seems like I should be working on more fundamentals and let the other things come with time. I just feel like we may be putting the cart before the horse a little -

I am definitely guilty of that!!! Sorry for all of the beginner questions but you keep your spine angled back so is the weight tranfer more of an increase to the front foot? -

And then ball position changes hitting down (iron) and hitting up (driver) correct? -
I have only been playing a few montgs and I have been working on changes in my swing. One of the suggestions he made was to create lag by not releasing the club until my left hand was in my left pocket. I tried this with very little success as it was hard for me to release it consistantly. I did some research on creating lag and some of it warned of the dangers of doing so especially for beginners. What do you think?
-
Update!: I feel like things are starting to come around and starting to feel more natural. My concern at this point is that the coach I have dealt with wants me to build an insane amount of lag and it has been very difficult and very inconsistent when I concentrate on the lag. I looked up some videos on creating lag and it warned on the dangers of doing so especially for a beginner. What is your take on this? Thanks in advance.

Advice on rebuilding swing
blaylock6502 replied to blaylock6502's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
Hahaha! I didnt add my avatar either and was wondering if that had ever happened to anyone else! Sorry I wasnt very clear but he didnt say to slow my swing down completely but to practice I guess so I could concentrate on the changes. Im sure my best bet would be to lay off the foam balls because when km not trying to hit something I can slow it down and concentrate but without someone watching the ball is the only feedback I have. -
I have only been playing a few months and after a little time working with a coach I have plenty of things to work on! I basically need to rebuild my swing but am not really sure to go about it. He gave me several aspects of my swing to work on but it is too much to think about at once. Is it effective to break swing into parts and practice the parts individually? Ie backswing, sarting the downswing, bottom of swing? If so how would you divide them? I have been practicing with foam balls and with a ball in front of me I find it really dificult to slow my swing down and concentrate on mechanics and it gets discouraging because sometimes when concentrating I make poor and sometimes no contact! Does anyone have a practice routine they recommend or go by?

I got a lot of good pointers from my coach like start with weight transfer once you feel the transer bring right elbow into your side and keep end of club pointed at ball and maintain wrist flex until very last but im really having trouble slowing my swing down and being able to concentrate on all of these things at once.? Would it be advisable to break swing into parts and work on one aspect at a time? If so how would you break it up? Thanks!

Cant we all just get along? :) I appreciate everyones input it just seems to make more sense now that I can relate it to something I somewhat understand as my gold iq is very low! Thanks again to everyone

I was talking to the coach I work woth today and he took a look at the videos and started to explain basically to me what you all had said. After I stared at him for a couple of minutes with a lost look on my face he said "swing the darn thing like a baseball bat" (I canged the wording a little). He said slow your swing down and pay attention to your weight transfer, when your wrists unhinge, when your wrists roll over etc and try to swing a bat like that! My neighbors probably already thought I was crazy but now they are sure of it. I tried to swing it like a bat keeping most of my weight on my back foot with my firsy move to be unhinging my wrists and not rolling them over until the end and everything you guys had said started to make sense. So I really started to look at the physics of swinging a bat (start with weight transfer to frony foot drive right elbow into the side lead with the hands and unginge and roll wrists at the same time ) and you realy understand where the power of the swing comes from as well as repeatability. Has anyone ever heard it explained this way? Maybe im just getting further off course but it really seems to make sense.?

I would say a push slice would be more accurate I guess what I was trying to say is that my drives end up short due to the push slice.
-
Thank you all very much for the input! Sometimes I feel like I am trying way too hard to crush the ball and bad things come from it and I would be well served to take things slow and easy but I have a hard time telling myself that with a driver in my hands!
