  1. Okay. So I returned the Ping i20 driver, 3 and 5 wood. In exchange I purchased a Taylormade R1. I tested R and S flex in the simulator. Hit 70 balls and consistently swinging 88 - 93 MPH and maybe 10 times clocked 94 - 96 MPH with both shafts. Distance in air was about 188 - 195. Roll out netting 205 -210, again with both shafts. A few duds netted 180 either mishiits with the stiff or flaming slices with the regular. Cracked one with stiff that was 215 / 225 total. I have played a 905R with made for Titleist fujikura speeder stiff for 6 years Could pop it out there 250 on average with a real ball and never felt the stiff (albeit a made for Titleist stiff) was too much. The Pro said I should go with the R flex. That at 54 my swing isn't going to get any faster and being on the low end of stiff and mid to high end of regular it was the better choice. Added that after 15 holes or on chilly days I'd get more out of the regular and be over swinging to get the stiff to work. Bought the R flex and don't plan to play for a week or so. Would appreciate input on whether the R is the right choice based on my swing speed or I should have gone with the S flex. Want to be certian I have made the correct choice. I have always been willing to give up a little distance to have a tighter dispersion. Always easier hitting a green from at 170 from the fairway than from the rough at 155. Both flexes felt good. Do like the crispness of a stiff, but I was ready to go either way based on consistent speeds and distances. I wish I'd taken my own balls to get a real feel and can still do that if I still have question marks about the R slex. Its not like I boast or brag about flex. Its just a big change and want it to be the right one. Perhaps the time is right. Its more about always being a stiff and worrying regular may cost accuracy. As for irons, play Titleist ZB cavity/muscle mix irons with project x 5.3 shafts. 7 iron distance is 150. Comments and advice from R1 players or those with input on flex in general appreciated.
  2. Couldn't edit original... I have been attempting to replace my Titleist 905R and 906 fairways for a while now. I've tried several offerings. Really wanted the black R1 and TP R11s. Woods to be the answer or possibly the Titelist 913s. Tried a used 909 and G20 but soured on them. After several trips to the local Golf Town I came upon the Ping I20 series on clearance. How I missed them is a mystery. Grabbed Driver, 3, 5 woods and 17 and 20 degree hybrids. All stock TFC stiff shafts and into the simulator I went. I have not found a shaft/head combo that worked this well for me. Kind of with the 3 and 5 had bigger heads, but all-in-all I made solid contact and the flight and distance seemed perfect. As for the driver, it is a 10.5 and flight and distance for me was better than the R11s, R1, 913, G25, X-Hot, you name it, I tried it. Maybe its the classic shape or the black finish, but they all just felt comfotable and matched my swing perfectly. I'm a 12 handicap and my swing isn't the issue, my putting is lol. Anyway, the choices are endless and as much as I wanted more of a forgiving driver and wood set I think these will be in my bag for a while. As for the 5 wood. While I know they seem to be falling out of favor, I have tried every hybrid out there hoping to supplement my 3 iron or bridge the gap between 3 wood and 3 iron, but can't find one that works for me. I tried the 17 and 20 degree I20 hybrids, but same result - high and short. So, the 5 wood stays for now. If I can find a hybrid that works will exchange it. Any other players have comments on the I20s or suggestions on a hybrid that worked for them after many attempts to find the right one?

  4. I've played for 30 years. Probably hit 3,000 buckets. Self taught other than Hogan's 5 fundamentals and Knudson's the natural swing. Couldn't really hit driver til the invention of the Big Bertha. Have since graduated through most Titleist offerings - 10.5 loft since '97. Switched to an I20 this spring and added 3 and 5 woods. Long irons never an issue, but cannot hit a hybrid to save my life. Would love to but will perpetually be a 3-PW guy. Tried Ping, Adams, TM, Titleist, Cobra, Callaway. All high and short. I'll go 5 wood or 7 iron depending on rough conditions and take my medicine for a poor drive. Kudos to all who hit them well. I'm happy with what's in my bag (irons are Titleist ZB cavity/muscleback combo). Step up and hit it with whatever works. Maintain a positive approach and swing with authority. Trust it and bust it!
