Thanks a lot for this. It's so strange to watch my swing back on the video and see just how far I continue to rotate with the club (especially when you compare it to my previously posted swing video, that stopped at a far more sensible spot!). If you look at my face-on swing video, you can see that my shoulder makes contact with my chin at about the 4 second mark, but at this point the swing isn't actually excessively long! The chin contact continues for another second (at which point you can see the rubbing that causes skin discomfort!). So my question is: If this shoulder-chin contact is occurring during what is essentially a half-swing, is some other factor not at play here, and not just a consequence of lifting the club too far back?

Whilst I take your point, it feels like a bit of a silly thing to say. Of course most of my posts are in this thread - I make a point of thanking and following up with everyone that has taken the time to reply and try to help me. At the same time, I clearly struggle enough with my own golf swing, so how am I remotely qualified to offer criticism of other peoples' swings? I think you (and @Janine05) are right - I clearly just have to take it back to basics and start playing with a half swing until I get it more under control. I'm not sure I understand what you mean by "body pivot" (nor what else you're suggesting is missing from my overall body movement). Please don't take the above as if I don't appreciate your time, by the way.

Any thoughts please guys? I'm really struggling. Should I return to the drill in the video? How should I deal with my ridiculous shoulder movement?
-
Sorry guys. Took a while for me to have another filming opportunity, but here we go: I only included the hinge drill DTL for completeness, as that's what my pro has had me doing to try to address the ridiculous over the top swing and lifting of my arms (although watching that back, it doesn't appear to be changing much!). The face-on vid is the one that really concerns me. I'm horrified by how much my head is moving! You can also see in that vid why I frequently leave the driving range with a raw chin...! 😫

Hi again guys. I've hit another wall with my swing and hoped for some more insight. I've thankfully overcome the shanking issues I'd had previously, but I'm currently battling pull hooks AND high slices. I've had a number of lessons and focused on several things over the past couple of years, including a grip change, more stable feet and TRYING to stop my arms from lifting too much (although I'm aware that's still very much a problem!). When I strike it well, I can carry a 7i about 185 (in cold, UK climate), so speed isn't a concern. Last year I was regularly shooting in the low 80s, but last weekend I shot 107... 😞 Thoughts? Thanks! Nick

Interesting, but I'm struggling to picture how... If I shift more towards the target, then surely my arms will follow, effectively shifting that upper pivot point slightly towards the target too... At that point, surely I'd be coming into the ball even steeper?
-
Thanks for this Boogie, just watched it but I don't feel like my swing suffers from either of the 2 issues that Erik demos at the start of the video. I'll attempt the drills anyway though. Do you have any additional criticisms of my swing?
-
This appears to have now been done, so thanks to whoever changed it on my behalf. I'm not really sure what you mean by "flow". I know that my swing is already very steep, so wouldn't shifting my weight forward more only exaggerate that? I also don't know what you mean by "back a little early in the backswing"... My own criticisms from those videos are the bingo wing left arm during the follow through, an apparently lack of a full hip turn (despite being unable to physically turn more, at least not without a change to my legs - maybe), and perhaps the worst issue - my spine angle seems slightly bent towards the target at address (hence the link to the leg length discrepancy article above). ...I'm happy to be told otherwise though!

Hi again. Sorry for the delay, but here are the slow-mo versions:
-
Fair enough, I'll attempt to get some more, but my golf buddy is away (on a golf holiday) so it might be a couple of weeks.
-
Forgot to mention, assuming I don't shank(!) then my usual shot shape is a pull. I've also recently discovered this excellent blog post about leg length discrepancy on the golf swing, and wondered if it could be the reason I'm seemingly unable to turn my hips...? One leg longer than the other! – neal granville golf Neal Granville PGA golf coach I am always curious about how we can make this game easier for ourselves...

I mean in the viewer's settings - just set the playback speed to 0.25 (I tried to do this in the recording settings but couldn't see it).
-
Hi Boogie. I think you should be able to set the playback speed in YouTube.

Hi guys, I'm back and needing some more swing advice. A couple of months ago I received my new irons (Jpx 921 pro) and I'm wanting to take my golf more seriously this season. I've played about 10 rounds and typically scoring 90-98, which I'm thoroughly disappointed with. I've just started seeing a new pro and he is trying to get me to have a much stronger left hand grip, but looking at my swing, that feels like the least of my problems. My swing has always been really steep, so I'm currently working on getting my hands more round my back on the backswing. As you can see in my previous videos, my shoulders also tend to be fairly far forward, causing my upper back to arch, so I'm trying to really focus on correcting this in these new swing videos. Yesterday I hit 5 shanks in a single round, but also crushed some 200+ long irons, so basically really inconsistent. Any input would be highly appreciated!

First Custom Fit, but Not Sure I Agree With it!

This is a good point - I've just checked my current 7i (jpx 800) and it's 32 degrees, which will obviously account for some loss of apex height in my new irons/shafts. -

Sadly they didn't have the details from my original fitting saved, and this time obviously wasn't a full, official fitting session. I was really aching from overdoing it in the gym, so was swinging noticeably slower this time, at around 83-84mph. Smash factor was around 1.35. I didn't see the landing angle for the new club/shaft, but my original clubs (regular flex) was around 45*. -

I have a [hopefully positive] update! I went back today and was re-fitted by a seemingly much more senior person. He actually measured my wrist to floor (I'm actually more or less standard, apparently) and took multiple lie board readings. I was hitting a 1* upright club at the time and it was repeatedly still 1-2 degrees towards the toe, so we settled on a 2* upright fit. As far as shaft was concerned, he suggested a Project X IO 6.0 (110g). The launch was still lower than my current clubs (DG R300), at about 70ft peak, on average. Spin was still low though, peaking at 4.5k. Interestingly, the upright lie didn't exaggerate the draw/hooks, so I'm much happier now. Thanks for everyone's input. If there are no further opinions on this new shaft then I guess I'll stop complaining and wait for it to be delivered! -

Understood (I think!). Thanks. I'll also add an avatar. -

Oh, then I've clearly misunderstood the principle; I'd assumed that the steeper the swing, the lower the effective angle of attack, resulting in less spin...? I'll definitely ask about the report tonight, but I suspect I know the answer! -

Thanks Bucki. I'd heard that Mizuno are often stronger lofts, but surely it's insanity for them to produce non-neutral lie angles in their clubs?! Annoyingly, I didn't have the chance to try the blackouts, but given my steep angle of attack and the resultant low spin, I'm guessing they wouldn't really work for me anyway. I've since been in touch with the fitter and expressed my concern about not being measured for both club length and lie angle, as well as my frustration about only bring presented with 2 shaft choices (from the ~12 stiff shafts which are currently available from Mizuno). I'm heading back there tonight as they've magically found 2 further shafts for me to test 🙄 -

Thanks Bill. It's interesting that you consider the DG to be a low trajectory shaft. It makes me think that the fitter really didn't care enough to try to increase my apex to attempt to accommodate my low spin rate. He didn't take any measurement for club length either, so I'm apparently standard everything, but stiffer shaft to accommodate my swing speed. To be fair, the fitter did say exactly that - they will adjust the lie angle if it doesn't work for me, but like I said in another reply, how would I ever know if it is not working for me if I don't have a basis for comparison with other lie angles? I also have fairly short legs, yet bizarrely a 35.5" wrist to floor measurement - which puts me at 2 degrees upright, according to Ping... Hence my concern that I'm just "standard" everything. -

I really appreciate this post, thanks a lot. Maybe standard everything will turn out to be the best for me after all, it's obviously just a bit frustrating to hear after going for my first custom fitting! I'm definitely happy with the heads though, and I'm pleased to hear your opinion on the s300, so hopefully the lie angle confusion will work itself out. The only question is - how will I ever know if it's resulting in dodgy shots, or if it's simply a bad swing (as I have no basis for comparison)!? -

I wasn't aware of DG being a higher spinning shaft - I'd just assumed that because it was a very common shaft it was pretty average spin. That's definitely good to know though. I did hit the forged but found I lost quite a bit of distance. Clearly I'm not good enough for them at this point. I agree, but if there's a particular technology that helps increase spin, why would I not go for it? I believe my swing speed is quite a bit faster than "average", but I'm fully aware that the low spin is a result of my rubbish swing. I wasn't suggesting it wasn't the right shaft, I was simply looking for another opinion. The above definitely makes me feel better about the DG now anyway! -

No, I haven't had documentation 🤷♂️ I'd agree with you, but I've already paid for the new set. They are also the most reputable fitters in my area, apparently! -

I don't recall seeing a landing angle, but the peak height was 81ft (on the one shot I can remember, anyway!). The lack of spin is obviously a failing of my swing, but I figured I could somewhat compensate (in terms of increasing my chances to hold a green, etc) by encouraging a higher ball flight (hence the shaft dilemma!)...? He gave me no feedback on shot height, so I've no idea if that's considered good or bad!
