    Which Irons?

I am after some advice for some new irons (new or second hand). I would say I have a slowish swing speed and handicap is 17. I have lost distance and confidence with my pings. Any thoughts please.
  2. Bearing in mind the cost etc, who prefers an old school driver like a Callaway greatest big Bertha over something more modern with the choice being endless?
  3. A friend of mine playing in an autumn Saturday bottle competition thought it was a stableford competition. He got into a little trouble on the first hole so thought as it's stableford he would pick up and move on. Only when he had put the ball in his pocket did his playing partners say it's a medal competition. So was he right to disqualify himself or could he have replaced the ball as it was a genuine and innocent mistake?

    Less Is More

Appreciating the minimalist approach to golf and having had my better performances carrying fewer clubs is there any opinion to a club manufacturer actually producing an iron set of eg Long, Medium, Short, Wedge. Would this help clear the clutter of decision making and simplify the game for us mid to high handicappers? Any thoughts or advice on this? Manx995
  5. Moving to winter golf now, need lightweight to lug around. So played the winter set up D, 3H, 4,6,8,50° P. Played really well with these fewer clubs today. Drive for show- get it on the green- and put for £$. Enjoy whatever you play.
  6. Good luck with the fitness side of your golf.
  7. I reckon whatever your preference of clubs is it is more the fact that less is probably more. Mine is D 3H 4 6 7 8 9 irons SW and Putter which is plenty to get round most courses.

  9. I can't see why these manufacturers don't use a degree marking system instead of numbers. They use degrees on wedge sets. Maybe it's all about convincing the user they need new clubs more often, a marketing plan??
  10. Old school names now there's a thought. Maybe some manufacturer might resurrect the idea. Its agreed the loft of say a TaylorMade is different to say that of Callaway etc so why not a name instead of a number. Irons I reckon you need a long, a medium, a short and a wedge for chipping. How nice and simple would that make the choices, then add in a driver and fairway wood or hybrid. How uncomplicated is that.
  11. It's not necessarily the number of the club that's important it's more the loft of the club. I'm content for the next month or two to stick with. 10.5° driver, 19° 3 hybrid, 4 6 7 8 irons, 50° wedge, sand wedge. These seem to allow me to get round our course ok.
  12. Let me know how you get on over your next few rounds with your scores. I reckon forget trying to bomb the exact yardage and just enjoy the moment. Regards Paul
  13. 4 6 8 are the irons 5 7 9 are the other irons. Then the various wedges. I played on Wednesday with just 8 clubs and was one under par, so tomorrow I get to see if I can prove my theory. Thanks for reading my thread.
  14. I am of the view that 14 clubs is too many for the average to high handicapper. Fewer choices in clubs helps with shot creation and also you learn to hit those which you carry better. All this thought you can hit a club a certain yardage is not reality. There is usually three clubs between the front and back of a green for the average golfer, so as long as it's in play relax and enjoy the game and not stress out that you've not hit that six iron exactly 150 yards. Driver, fairway wood or hybrid, any a few iron you like to hit 468 or 579 wedge and putter and you don't need 100 balls in your bag either. Relax and have some fun with your mates and you will score lower.
  15. Just played Freshwater Golf Club on the Isle of Wight today whilst on holiday. Never played this course before and also forgot my Garmin watch (grrr). Point is only had 8 clubs and putter, D 3h 4 6 7 8 9 SW P. To be honest it was plenty of equipment 14 is too many. Played to handicap.
  16. I'm really warming to the half set and especially the Miura colour coding of iron loft 25 32 40 49 or very similar. I can't quite decide on 4 6 8 W or 5 7 9 SW. Any thoughts?
  17. Not sure if folks think this is a bit weird but I'm quite looking forward to some winter golf. Now I do like the lazy hazy days of summer but there's something really nice with the challenge of the winter course and a bit of frost. This year it's a pencil bag with driver, 3 hybrid, 5,7,9,SW, putter.
  18. I've been struggling with club selection of late, especially fairway woods, ie to carry a 5 wood or 7, 3 wood or hybrid, one or two wedges. Too many choices with too many clubs. So I've decided to scrap the 14 club idea and have this set up. Driver, 3 wood, 3 hybrid, 5,6,7,8,9, sand wedge, vokey 50° and a putter. Summer. In winter I would drop the 50°, 6,8, and 3 wood. Any thoughts on my 11 club set up?
  19. What is the shortest usable 3 wood shaft length and is accuracy more important than distance?
