What's a good light golf bag?
Cossackred replied to Cossackred's topic in Balls, Carts/Bags, Apparel, Gear, Etc.
Ok, no problem. If I'm walking I'll have my pull cart, so I guess I don't need the full shoulder strap setup, but a single shoulder strap would be nice. Not sure if smaller light bags are harder to strap in on a cart, but I'd like to go on a cart too. The kick stand things too for when I'm just at the range too. Eventually I'd like to carry 5 ,6 ,7 ,8 ,9 , PW, AW, SW, 4 Hybrid, Driver and Putter. So there's 11, and maybe 3 wood so 12 clubs. thanks! -
My bag right now is a beast! I'm looking for something that isn't huge and doesn't feel like I'm lugging around a large travel suitcase. I liked the last nike bag I had, but it went out with the clubs and now I'm looking fo a nice quality light bag. Suggestions? thanks

Something other than golf I like to do. Anyone else go fishing? Where about? what fish? I'm in the Northern Bay Area and fish the Napa River, San Pablo Bay, Bodega Bay, Lake Sonoma, etc etc...Striper, Sturgeon, Perch, and Shark mostly or Large Mouth and Trout inland. I have a 12 ft Aluminum Boat with a 2008, 9.8hp Tohatsu 4stroke. It's not much, but it's gets me off the shore. Anyone else? Maybe on the one weekend per year you aren't playing golf?

Yeah, a lot of that going on too. Behind the whining about my score not counting, there was the "lets see what your clubs can do this time" and the "come on Super Clubs" as I walked to the tee. All in good fun, but still kinda taking away from a good day of golf (for me at least). I know they are game improvement, but it's still a little bit me in there making a shot, right? It's not like they're just automatically hitting the ball in the hole. I'm just in the trees less often and it makes that 2nd or 3rd shot a lot easier. Not as much chipping back onto the fairway to get a shot at the green. Seeing the worst of 4, get 2nd in the group wasn't fun for them I guess. Not that any of us are really "good" at golf, I'm usually a few shots behind everyone by the end of the front 9, at least. If I could stop 3 putting, I might stay in second. The friend who gets first, usually is in first by a good amount. He's more serious about golf and has a lot more time to play than the rest of us.

Ok, as long as real golfers are ok with a less skilled player using these, then I can shrug off the heckling of my friends. I only know one or two people that have less than a +10 handicap. I dropped 8 shots on the last game with these guys. Now if I could stop 3-4 putting, I'd be golden. They're 30-35 years old, lol, and I'm pretty sure they all have tour type irons and whatever driver is in the window at the local golf shop. They're all a bit more well off financially than I am too. I'm just glad my irons are going straight and kinda plopping down on the greens instead of rolling off down the back of them.

So I got some SGI clubs, went out with some friends, got made fun of for having bulky ugly clubs, hit the best round of my life (only been playing golf for a few years, more off than on), and got called a cheater for having SGI clubs and getting a lower score than a couple buddies that I would say are better golfers than I am. So I'm wondering if you good golfers out there think SGI clubs are kind of cheating? I mean they take less skill to play well, and I am obviously an example of that. I understand the "ugly" part, as they're huge. I don't really care what other people say about the look, but being discredited kinda sucks. Thoughts? Opinions?
-
said to be SGI and a really high MOI, etc etc... Anyone use them? Likes? Dislikes? I know everyone has their own opinion, but everything I've read has been pos.. I'll try before buying, but just looking for other people's thoughts on the clubs. thanks
-
So for where I am, just so I know...my next steps are: Go to a club fitter and tell them "I'm not buying anything now" so they won't try and up-sell anything. see if I like Steel or Graphite better. See what flex I like/need Try a hand full of the clubs recommended here. Also thinking about trying the TM Burner Super launch irons. Get my grip size figured out. Get clubs elsewhere that I can afford with the shaft/flex I like/need. Get the grips redone with the larger grips I need Play with them (get lessons) until my swing is more consistent and then have the lie angle adjusted later for each club individually. Does this sound about right? thanks!

First off, thank you for all of the other advice too. I read it all and will definitely not rush into an iron set again. Try the irons a few times before buying etc etc... But since there aren't any "dumb" questions, I'm going to toss this one out there. What are the colored dots on the irons for? What do they mean? My Zevo's have a "purple dot" on them. Thanks! And thanks again tweaky. I'll make sure if I get clubs adjusted for lie etc, I'll have them look at each club individually. These are the types of things I wouldn't really think of as I am kinda at the point where I wouldn't know if they were doing it right or wrong.

Whats your range routine?
Cossackred replied to toddmlazarchick's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
I am not an experienced golfer, although I'm trying really hard to get better. When I go I take out my 9 iron and hit the 100 yard pin, which is my normal length on that club. Then I go down the list trying to hit my usual distances with each club. 8i 125, 7i 150, etc etc...going down the list. I end on the range with my driver. I then head over to the chipping area and finish on the putting green. I don't know if that's a good way to order things, but it's my routine. :) -
thanks man, and thanks to everyone else responding in here. So after a bunch of people said get fitted first, possibly the only thing effected by the fitting for me is shaft type. Most clubs are standard length on ebay or CL, which I was told is good for me, and I know my grip size is bigger than normal. The grips on my old clubs are soft oversized Winn grips. I don't know what types of grips are better (soft etc), but I read a few really bad reviews online about the grips I've been using. I don't know what a good grip would be/feel like. Just what's comfortable? The first guy at the shop basically said "These are $6 each and these are $3 each." Not much more than that. At least the first guy. There were two guys there. One guy tried to get me to lengthen the clubs, get $6 grips, and change the lie angle one way. Then another guy came over and said the lie angle should go the other way because I was pushing it off to the right, the clubs don't need to be lengthened, and measured my hands and fingers to see what grips I need. I took my clubs and left based on just not knowing who to trust. I'm leaning towards the second guy getting me to spend less and actually doing more tests with reasons for why I was buying things. So from what I'm hearing I should: 1: First, go to a shop and swing a few different full cavity back clubs that were recommended here to see what feels good. 2: Have someone there tell me if I should go for Graphite or Steel based on my swing speed. 3: Then check the feel of different grips and get measured up for grip size. 4: Next, leave the shop and go out and buy one of these iron sets on Ebay or Craigslist for a price I can afford. 5: After that, take them back and get new grips put on them to fit my hands. 6: Then go out and hit the range with the clubs and see how it goes. Do I ever go back and get the lie angle adjusted? How would I really know if it's needed? I hit at this last shop where I had the tape on the bottom of the club and hit on the plastic piece to make marks on the tape. I used a standard club and a club that was an inch longer. The mark on the standard club was on the very back edge of the tape only and only went to the second notch on the tape if you start from the end closest to me. On the longer club, the mark covered a larger section of the tape (not just the back edge) but was still only to the second notch from me on the tape. The thing is, I've never taken a lesson, or had someone tell me how to swing or hold a club even, so do I actually have my clubs changed if it's possibly a poor swing causing the adjustments to be needed? I am pretty sure that was your point of not having a new golfer go for the full on fitting for clubs. Still just wanted to clear up my own confusion before jumping into something again. Again, thank you and thank you to everyone who's trying to help me out here!! -Eric

I found some of the 770cfe, but I can't find the 870ti's for sale anywhere. How much do they run? From the reviews, the 870ti's sound a bit better than the 770cfe. I see you use the 770cfe's though. I was wondering if you could kinda break down how this fitting thing works. I'm supposed to go in to a golf shop, and try different clubs and get measured up and someone will tell me what clubs would be best for me? Then customize them for me? Kinda confused on what to ask for when going to a shop. I was hoping not to pay golf shop prices on clubs, but still have them customized. thanks for your help! Sorry if I sound like an idiot here, but none of me good friends or family golf so I really don't have anyone to help me out with this.

Sorry man,I'm new to golf. Not up on my golf terms. When I was at the local golf shop he said some clubs are set at a different angle than others which helped the ball go higher. Some reviews I read talked about weight distribution that helped the ball to go higher more often. Heard the same type of thing on wedge/chipper reviews. I thought the term "loft" was getting the ball up. What's that called? I'm kinda learning the terms for stuff as I go. Guy at the golf shop looked at me weird for not knowing my glove size. I don't have one, so.... lol. I'm just trying to narrow the club choice down. There's a lot out there and obviously I know very little about which clubs can help me and which shafts are better, or which how I can avoid ending up with a set like the ones I have that aren't meant for a new player like me. Any help would be appreciated! :)

ok, so I know what you guys like, but what about my questions and clubs for me? lol Forgiveness, Loft, length, shaft type, sweet spot size, etc... I appreciate your responses, but just saying "I like these" doesn't really help me unless you tell me what aspects of what I am looking for the irons cover. Again, thank you for your responses.

Well, I got some new clubs that were as my golfing buddy said "made for good players". I'll admit, I'm not that good. Been playing with Zevo Comp Equipe Oversized clubs I got for $50 off of CL. So, out with the expensive clubs and back to my Zevo's until I can get some new irons. Looking for some advice: Shaft type? My Zevo's are Graphite and the good ones I'm selling are steel. Opinions or thoughts on the difference between these? Club? Looking for something very forgiving that will still get me the a good distance. I get 100 yards with my 9i and 150 with my 7i. I'd like good loft on them too. I know very little about clubs but was told to get full cavity back clubs. I will have about $500 to get the irons and have them fitted + new grips. I've been told that even though I'm 6'2", my long arms allow me to use Standard length clubs so no lengthening. Just grips and angle possibly. I'd like 4i-pw at least. Offset or no offset? Thoughts on this in general? A guy recommended Callaway Big Bertha 2008 irons. Thoughts? thanks in advance!

I would say I was hitting a bit better on my 3rd 80 ball bucket of the day than the first. What adjustment on these clubs could they do besides lengthen them? -

Yeah, I don't even know what "getting fitted" entails. This is all new to me. Just enjoy golf and thought this would help. Next time I will make sure to do that first :) Choice a: Getting clubs that would let me stick with the comfortable swing I've been using does really sound nice. So what would they do/check to adjust the clubs besides length and getting clubs with an offset? -

Cossackred replied to Cossackred's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
Maybe "consistently" was misleading. 7i on 150 8i on 125 and 9i on 100 would be at 7 of 10 (which for me is better than I've ever been), but that's with a shank, roller, slice in the trees, or a pop up mixed in there. I'm no pro. Course is a whole different story as I have a tough time with drivers, hybrids, and low number irons. But I can say, it was easy to hit the ball straight and at a consistent distance with each of the higher number clubs at the range and course. I guess I figured the better clubs would make it even easier. Guess not. -

Cossackred replied to Cossackred's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
ok, thank you! So here's where I stand then. A local shop said I could trade them in and most likely lose some money. Then get fitted and pay more for clubs that aren't as good as these, but will be easier for beginners like me with a good offset. or I pay $4 per club and get them lengthened an inch at the same shop and I just keep practicing until I'm actually good enough to use the clubs I bought. Opinion? I'm leaning towards the second one and then possibly getting some real lessons. Those fun little trips to the "not so good players" side of the local course is going to be a bit more frustrating for a while though. -

These are forged, but are the "Split Cavity" backs. Does that make any difference towards being forgiving? -

Sounds possible. I'm not sure of the flex on the old clubs. The new clubs are stiff. I'll take them to a shop and get fitted for them asap! Thanks! I couldn't take the bad outing, so I watched some research and on offsets and it seems the offset on my old clubs was a lot more than that of the new clubs. I went back out to the range and started my swing with my hands forward a bit. It corrected it for the most part, although it's not comfortable at all and my right wrist is in a bit of pain right now. I do think there's something in the club size too. I really appreciate the reply. Thank you!
