  1. Look up "hogan proper grip" on google images. The first picture shows the proper placement of the club in your left hand. Sorry, I would post the picture but I'm on mobile'
  2. Update I'm still undecided on how to hit my driver. Playing yesterday morning, all morning I was hitting my driver like I hit my irons, and I was getting decent results. Not very long, my best might have been 250, but even my slices didn't get me into too much trouble. On 18, I decided to try and really get after it, and of course I annihilate it. I hit it right down the middle with a slight draw, and rolled out to just over 300. I'll definitely keep hitting my 3 wood like I hit irons, but I'm going to be experimenting and working on my driver a lot. Also figured out last week that I let my backswing get way too long for my iron shots. I was getting more and more inconsistent until I realized that. Now I've been focusing on hitting what feels like about 80% for a full swing. I'm making solid contact on almost every shot again.
  3. I'm looking into getting a push cart so that I can start walking on a more regular basis. I like walking the course, but my right foot can't take the extra weight from the bag for 4 hours. I had turf toe when I was younger that I didn't let heal, and I get some hardcore arthritis in my right big toe when I walk 18. So with that said, what is everyone's feelings on push carts? Is spending $200 on a Clicgear 3.0 worth it versus spending 65 on something serviceable? I imagine the Clicgear or something comparable is going to stand up to a lot more rounds that the cheaper cart. Also, what are everyone's recommendations for carts? What are good features to look for in one that make it more convenient/useful (like easy wheel locking, etc.)? Everyone's input is appreciated guys!
  4. I don't understand why you don't read Hogan's book, even after reading your explanation. As an engineer, I can relate to the joy of finding out something yourself, but I don't believe I would have ever learned thermodynamics by watching an air compressor. Why don't you ignore what he wrote about feel, and just use the pictures and diagrams as instructions? Had you read his book, you wouldn't be asking yourself a lot of these simple questions that you're stuck on. This is the proper foot position as shown by Hogan. I haven't gone through this entire thread, but I don't believe you're putting as much into your grip as you should. I'm sure someone has told you this already, but Hogan basically says that your grip will make or break you, and says that without a proper grip, it is impossible to execute a proper swing. Even if you don't read Hogan's entire book, you need to read the section on the proper grip.
  5. Nothing wrong with being a picker. Look at Tom Watson. Plus, you don't have to clean your clubs off quite as often, :D. At the range today, I discovered something. I've always hit my driver/3 wood trying to kill the ball, and subsequently, having to stand a ways back from the ball. Today, I decided to approach these two clubs like I approach my irons. I've never hit my 3 wood so well, and my driver was going much straighter than usual. My misses weren't huge arcing slices, but moderate fades. So from this point forward, I'm working on using the same swing for my woods as my irons.
  6. So as long as someone is consistent in how they align themselves, it doesn't really matter what their stance is? If that's the case, then I can certainly learn to aim well with how I hit instead of trying to change it.
  7. Ever since I took up golf, I've had trouble aiming the ball with any sort of consistency. Until this year, I never really paid attention to where I was aiming while on the range because I was focused on improving my ballstriking ability. Now that I'm comfortable with that, I'm trying to become much more accurate. I realized on the range this past week that I have a fairly open stance at address. My feet might be pointed down the fairway, but my shoulders and swingpath are pointed slightly to the right. I've always had to close my clubface a little to avoid a push and it seems like I might have pinpointed the problem finally. Can anyone suggest some drills or some way to begin improving my stance at address?
  8. My account isn't new but I've never really said much on these forums, so I thought I'd say hello. I made my account last year to ask what kind of clubs I should be looking at. I got a lot of great suggestions, and I ended up getting a set of Wilson Staff Ci9's, which I absolutely love. My background in golf goes back five or six years. I hacked my way around the course until last summer when I decided to get a little more serious. I spent 3-4 days a week last summer at the range working on my ballstriking and it made an enormous difference. I'm at the point in my game right now where If i could get a grasp on the mental aspect, I could pretty easily get to around 10 hdcp. My problem is 2-3 holes a round. For example, last weekend, I shot 89. For 15 of those holes, I was +7. For the other three, I was +9. Again, today, I shot 92. I ended up with a +5 on the first hole, a triple bogey on the back nine, and a couple of doubles. It's pretty frustrating playing well for most of the day but ending up with a score like that. The season has just started though so I'm hoping to break 80 a couple of times this summer. Anyways, I'll be around, just wanted to introduce myself before getting into the boards.
  9. Hah, I'm not seeing it at address! My setup isn't THAT bad, :). I'm just not a fan of the looks of them. They also seem a little heaver to me and they just don't quite feel right in my hands. I'll try out the Pings, Clevelands and Wilsons. I was also looking at the Mizuno MX-200 & 300's, would you suggest them?
  10. What Pings and Clevelands should I try specifically?
  11. Hey guys, I'm new to the forums here and I'm looking for some advice on club selection. I've been playing for a few years now and I'm ready to get out of my starter set. I'm using a set of Founder's Club irons I was given as a gift from my parents. I am looking for a set that's strictly irons. I have a 3 and 4 hybrid right now, and I hit them fine, but I'd prefer a regular 3 and 4 iron to hybrids. I have no trouble getting my clubs in the air, and my distances is fine, so it's not unusual for me to hit the hybrids as high as a PW should be. I feel like I would be a little more confident with an iron in my hand than a hybrid as well. All that being said, I have tried out Taylormade Burner 1.0's, Burner Pluses, and Callaway X-20 NG's. The Burner Pluses were a definite no-go for me. The huge sole on the lower clubs did not exactly inspire confidence when looking at them, and I didn't feel like I ever hit them solid. The Burner 1.0's were more pleasing to look at at address and I felt like I hit them alright. Those were originally the two sets I was trying to decide between after researching GIC online. I decided to give the X-20's a try though and I have to say, I really liked how they felt. They're good looking and easy to hit for me. The X-20's will be the club to beat for me as I look at more sets, but I'm wanting recommendations on what else I should try. I'm not looking to be able to shape my shots or anything, I'm definitely not there yet. I'm looking for something to give me a little forgiveness when I hit off the toe or the heel, but not something that's going to alter the trajectory of my shots. Any suggestions are welcome guys, and thanks in advance.
