  1. OK, I know, so don;'t even say it. They're not cool, they're limited in their application, they're a waste of a space, they're for hacks - yada, yada, yada. But I have to say - THEY WORK!!! I bought an Odyssey Marxman chipper a few yrs back, I used it for about 3 - 9 hole rounds. I took it out becuase of the stigma around it and I need the 14 clubs I have. But I have to say that I chipped it close many times, in the short time I used it during a round. I had 2 or 3 near misses and I holed out from 25ft once. I think ichipped in maybe 2 other times in my life. Now, I consider myself a good wedge player and I practice all kinds of shots in my backyard all yr round with wedghes. Moreover, I can play a similiar Chip-shot with any iron in my bag, but there is just something about these chippers, that makes it soo much easier. I don't know what it is but they are literally fool-proof1 IMO, they provide a significantly improved chance of getting it tight. Becuase of this, I really want to put it back in the bag. I don't care if people snicker, the thing works and it's a SCORING club so if it performs for you, I think it can save strokes, seriously. I know some people say - you can do the same thing with any of your clubs. Well, I don't agree with that. Yes you can chip with any iron in the bag but there is much more inconsistency, predictability, etc. On several occasions I have done a head-to-head test with the chipper vs other irons and wedges in my bag. One thing I can say for sure, is that equally lofted irons do not produce a similiar result. For example, lets say you have a 37* chipper and a 37* 8 iron, which I do and have tested head to head. The chipper seems to lift the ball quicker, higher, lands and rolls in a much more predictable pattern. The 8iron barely lifted the ball off the ground and rolled much father. I went thru my clubs to find what club (loft) would acheive a similiar trajectory and run out, with the same swing and I found it was not the eaually lofted 8 iron it was a GW @ 50*. However, like I said, the GW was more incosistent, sometimes i checked a little, sometimes not, it was much harder to hit precisely and much harder to get the same roll-out. But it was interesting that the GW provided a similiar trajectory, not an 8iron. Same stroke, same length swing etc. For some reason, the 37* 8 iron chip produced a much lower trajectory and rolls much more and was more incosistent and harder to predict the end result. My question is I am putting this club back in the bag, however, I am wondering why it comes stock with a standard cound Iron grip and why not a putter grip. Afterall, I think most people would agree that these are putting wedges and you use a putting stroke when using them,. they are not full, half, quarter swing clubs, even though I heard that some people do use them that way, but do you think I should put a putting grip on it. Do you think that would be a good idea or reduce some of the versatility of the club? Personally, I have never used the chipper with anyother stroke other than a typical putting stroke. Any thoughts about my experience in genral or getting mine re-gripped with a putter grip? Also, I see Oddyssey has since come out with a higher lofted 46* chipper. I am curious if anyone has hit both and what your thoughts are.
  2. I don't think he needs to work on GIRs, He hit 7 & 5 greens, and 7 & 6 Fairways - that's pretty good. I don't know what his goals are, but hitting any more 7GIRS could statistically give him a shot @ high 70s. Based on his stats, which is all we have, I think it shows ball striking was good, putting was bad and could have had better course mgmt to avoid the penalties.
  3. Your game seems a lot like mine, only better. 2 quick Observations, though. 1) You have a too many Penalties or blow up holes. 2) Putting needs to improve. Check this article out, http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_m0HFI/is_5_57/ai_n26827727/ Half way down it gives you an avg score per how many GIRs & Putts you hit. It's hard to read but you'll get it. I know It might not seem that technical but I have been using this chart for several yrs and I think its spot on! The chart says that if you hit 5GIRs you should shoot 85 and 7GIRs=81. It also says that 36 putts puts you around a 92 and 35 puts you at an 83 So putting it together, Round 1 = 7GIRs=81, 36P=92, 3Penalties. You shot 88. Clearly, you hit the ball well, it's just that you either had a few disaster holes and you may have 3 putted too much or just missed the short ones. had you putted better and had less penalties you should have been in the Mid to low 80s Round 2 = 5GIRs=85, 35P=88, 2Penalites. Again, putts and penalties are where you strokes are going. Your GIRs are very good, you're just not sinking the putts and the penalties are compounding the problem. I think this chart also shows your potential, If you hit 7GIRs and putt better, you'd be close to breaking 80! Keep at it! Hope the chart helps, I use it all the time!
  4. I am suprised Option C is the leader, I would have figuered Option B. Even though I love the strong 3, I figuere a standard 3 would be very similiar and would give me better chance to hit off the turf. As for the 5W - I am leaning towards the Adams XTD Hybrid-Fairway, this seems to be a nice balance of a hybrid and a fairway wood. Might be a nice transition from the 4H to the 3W. To me that 5W/3H/3I area is very tricky to fill. Does anyone have any experience with the Adams XTD Hybrid-Fairway (5 @18*)
  5. I was kind of leaning towards Option B or C. I just don't know which would be preferred the 3H or the 5W. What are the pros and cons of each?
  6. I need some help with finishing my bag. Below is what I have so far. 1. Putter 2. LW @ 60* = 50y 3. SW @ 55* = 70y 4. GW @ 50* = 90y 5. PW @ 45* = 110y 6. 9i @ 41* = 120y 7. 8i @ 37* = 130y 8. 7i @ 33* = 140y 9. 6i @ 29* = 150y 10. 5i @ 25*= 160y 11. 4H @ 22* = 170y 12. 13. 14. Driver = 10.5* = 230y As you can see, I have 2 slots open that I need to fill. My longest iron is a 5iron @ 25* which I hit 160-165. Then I have a hybrid @ 22* which I hit about 170-175. The way I see it I have 3 options. I would GREATLY appreciate any input and advice you guys and gals have. I need to figuere this out and I just cannot seem to make a decision. I really need some feedback. So here are my 3 options, unless you have other suggestions. Option A . Strong 3W @ 13* & 4W @ 16.5*. The reason for this is that I struggle with the driver (Yes I am taking lesson and working on it and making progress, but nevertheless, that strong 3W I can hit almost as long as my driver off the tee. It's really comforting having a backup driver. I also like it for Par 5s and shorter Par 4s. Driving has been my biggest bane so it's nice t0 have. However, Since the strong 3 is not very good from the fairway, in fact not good at all - the 4W would be used for shots 185-195. The 4W wood goes about 190ish and this would create a gap between my 4H and the 4W. If I go this route, here is what it would look like... 11. 4H @ 22* = 170y 12. 4W @16.5* = 190y 13. 3=W @ 13* = 210 (tee only) 14. Driver = 10.5* = 230y Option B . Standard 3W @ 15* & 5W @ 18*. I forget the strong 3W and I go with a standard 3W @ 15* Which would be a compromise for a better fairway wood while still having a backup driver, This would sacrafice a tiny bit of distance as compared to the strong 3, but it might give me a more versatile club in the regular 3W. Then I go with a 5W which I could use @ 185yards. Here's what it would look like. This option might give me the best coverage in yardage gaps and best overall compromise, However, I am just not sure what role the 5W would play. 11. 4H @ 22* = 170y 12. 5W @ 18* = 185y 13. 3W @ 13* = 200 (tee & fwy) 14. Driver = 10.5* = 230 Option C . Same as Option B, but I replace the 5W with a 3Hybrid. So I have the Standard 3W @ 15* & 3Hybrid @ 19* This is the same scenario as above. I Just don't know which club, the 5W or the 3H would be more versatile. My woods have a tendency to fade a little so maybe I should go with the 3H, however, then I don't really have a FW wood. With this route, I will have 2H and a 3W. 1. 4H @ 22* = 170y 12. 3H @19* = 180y 13. 3W @ 15* = 200 (tee & fwy) 14. Driver = 10.5* = 225 So that's it - Which do you think I should go with and why?? Any help would be appreciated!! I thank you in advance for any input or advice you can offer. THANKS!!!!
