  1. Hi, Yea I have been filming my swings. I posted one in the member swings section. It looks as though I am not performing that motion in the swing. I have tried it before and it seems to work, so I will keep at it. I am thinking it is more a feeling rather than what is actually happening. Seems a bit tougher to execute, but hey, that's golf. Good to know that it is a common technique. Thanks for the advice.
  2. I took a golf lesson a few months ago and was told to flatten out my downswing to get it on plane, I had to make a looping motion like an upside down J to get a flatter plane. I have never heard of this in any instruction before, is this common? It seemed to work, but now the last two times I went out to the range to hit balls, I either shanked them or hit them extremely short. Before the shanking occurred, I was hitting almost every ball fine, even though my downswing was a bit steep. Could this new motion be causing my shanks?
  3. I have been playing golf for quite a while, but it was only sporadic and with friends. Lately, I decided to get serious about the game and took a couple of lessons to work on the problem areas of my swing. I think there is something wrong with the downswing, but not quite sure what it is for the life of me. Would really appreciate some great feedback! I've been Playing Golf for: On and off for the past 5 years, but seriously in the past 3 months My current handicap index or average score is: 20+ My typical ball flight is: Inconsistent The shot I hate or the "miss" I'm trying to reduce/eliminate is: Seems like an over the top swing, not sure how to flatten it out. 4. I agree.. I have been concentrating on those things and gotten them into muscle memory over the past months. I know it's best to learn it in bites. I just won't see him for while so I thought I'd ask this point.
  5. The first two bits I worked on my swing with my instructor were using the lead arm and not thinking about the trailing arm, also getting my weight to pivot to the left foot. I then learned about the lateral hip movement to the left, keeping the head in position, and rotating my hips so buckle points at target on impact. My question is what should I be thinking about what my hands and arms are doing on the downswing ? Do I even think of pulling the butt end of the club with my hands? That's what I have been doing at this point and my results are not always consistent. Or should I just let the movement of my lower body passively swing my arms and do I actively try to get that right elbow tucked?
  6. Cool. Thanks. Is it more of a feel of keeping the body connected rather than consciously getting the right elbow in the groove? If the bump and turn are executed correctly, the right elbow should fall into place at the right moment. I think that is correct, but I just wanted to make sure.
  7. Find the one that works for you. However, it's best to use a consistent grip and keep that variable static for each swing. It is easy to get the consistently grip right in the swing, so find one that works and try best not to change it. The grip is so critical. The hard parts all synching the correct body movements once you actually swing the club! The major takeaway of the grip is to keep your hands balanced throughout the swing to avoid one overtaking the other. Here, the neutral grip is preferred, in my opinion, but a pro should help you if you need to change something based on your physical attributes. The vast majority of beginning golfers are right hand dominant and it feels instinctual but INCORRECT for most to get that right hand on on bottom cause its strong and pound at the ball with the arms only. That's wrong because you will only be hitting with your arms, instead of your core, for loss of club head speed - not only that, you can't use centripetal acceleration to square the club face, leading to pulls and hooks.
  8. Mats are fine, except I like to see the divots. If you are an experienced golfer, no doubt about it, you can still FEEL and SEE it if you hit it fat or thin. Sounds like you need to work on the weight transfer if you are hitting it like that with the hips first! That clears up errant shots.
  9. I am not exactly new to the game of golf but I recently started taking instruction to promote good form. My posture, grip and setup are fine, and I focus on keeping the lead arm in motion, while keeping the trailing arm inert. I have little trouble making contact with the ball but I tend to use too much upper body, resulting in frequent pull shots. I use a little hip bump on the left side and turn with the hips to promote an in-to-in swing path on plane, but I have a tendency to still hit pull shots. Is there any cue people use to make sure this doesn't happen? How about trying to match the right shoulder and right hip on impact to form that K shape at impact? That works for me sometimes but I am wondering if there is a better way to think about it, or if it's mainly a "feel" thing that cannot be explained until you hit enough balls to get it right. Thanks!
