Larger sweet spot is easier to hit. But why does the iron head have to be larger in order to get technology? The irons you have are your typically players CB. Very little technology in those compared to the R7s. The only thing your irons have is perimeter weighting on the CB irons. The R7s have a thin and hotter face which helps increase the perimeter weighting and therefore the sweet spot. If larger sweet spot was the only concern, then why don't we all just hit 460cc clubs with different lofts from tee to green? (Exaggeration obviously). I want a club like the R7 packed into the head of a players CB. I don't simply want a larger sweet spot. I want the largest amount of the club head to be the sweet spot.

Oh and some of my motivation for posting this thread is due to this little training club. I hit this club at the golf show. And even though I was nervous about it I actually wound up striking it quite well. Granted it was just into a net. But it felt like I was hitting good shots. And the author of this article found it easier to hit than his game irons. My point is...if the only part of the iron face is the sweet spot the it would be easier to find as long as you don't shank it or whiff completely. I think large iron heads make it harder to find the sweet spot.

Yeah I am not necessarily good at this game and I hack with any iron I pick up on some days and other days I can hit any blade or SGI iron so this forum is only for my own interest. Although I am interested in this topic for myself I see this as a common thought on many forums and golf websites so I sort of just wanted to bring up the idea of blade sized clubs with the advantages of GI/SGI clubs such as hot faces, high launch, and good forgiveness on heel and toe strikes. It seems like a lot of people want the looks of a players club but definitely wouldn't complain if the club hit the ball straight every time and 10 yards farther than their current players clubs. (Although I know some would not want inconsistent distances that some say exist with hot faces.) And what that article is saying is what I am thinking. But clubs still seem to be stopping at larger club head sizes. For instance...the rocketbladez irons are still larger than a players iron. Why can't they take that same design and just smash it into a bit smaller head. Just food for thought.

Thanks for the suggestions. I have tried the MP-53s which were pretty good but I think manufacturers should be able to pack a little more into a small head. Is there anything major in the 54s that is different than the 53s? As for the I series irons from ping...I'm not a big fan. I do not like that the sole of the club is quite large still. I do not like looking at the sole behind the club at address. But these have the right idea....just wish they could put some heavier metal in the sole rather than making it longer/deeper.

Are there any small (player sized) clubs that offer the advantages of GI clubs? I am thinking such as the AP2, JPX 825 Pro, JPX EZ forged.I am looking for forgiveness mostly but wouldn't mind some extra distance either. Personally I think it is more/at least as difficult to hit the sweet spot with big shovels as it is with blade sized irons. Basically I am looking for the largest sweet spot:club head ratio. Is there anyway to determine which clubs have the highest sweet spot:club head ratio? Open to suggestions.

Did I buy the wrong irons for me?
dwade247 replied to Cheap trip's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
I am not all that knowledgeable about how you can adjust clubs but if the weaker lofts are making you hit the ball too high, why don't you have the lofts strengthened? The PGA store will adjust the loft/lie of 8 clubs for 20 bucks. I'm cheap but I would spend $20 to make my new set of irons work better for me. (All this being said, I am not sure how much loft adjustments you can do to your clubs, but it would be looking into I would think). Plus a lot of people struggle with new clubs when they first get them (ie. Rory McIlroy) and he had all the help and fitting aids at his side. (granted there were likely other factors that affected his play) -
I don't know if you are checking this thread still, but I would say get whatever you like. Whether you like a SGI club cause it is "supposed" to help you play better or you like a Titleist blade cause they are cool or whatever. This game is hard no matter what club you use so I think you may as well feel like a bada** while you are hacking away. I find that when I'm hitting good I can hit any iron and when I'm hitting bad I can't hit anything. I also think shopping for used clubs is fun and I have liked a lot of used iron sets for

mvmac, Appreciate the pics. That's what most of the used forged irons look like that I see. Good to know it's not likely a big deal.
-
Thanks. I have seen a couple people say this. Just wanted to try and gather as much input as I could. Don't want to be wasting money!
-
I agree with all this. I guess I should have posted a more direct question. If I want my irons to last 10+ years, will forged clubs make it that long? And should I be wary about buying used forged clubs that may show some face wear?
-
Just wondering about the affect and time of onset of face wear. I spend a lot of time looking at used clubs and have noticed most of the forged clubs have face wear on the sweet spot. Does the affect the performance of the club? While most of the used cast clubs don't show the face wear. Do cast clubs ever get this wear? Does 431 stainless steal wear faster/slower than 17-4? Anyone have experience with this or any comments?

Thank you very much luciuswooding. I truly appreciate your input. I doubt I would have ever noticed the elbow thing. thanks a lot!

Oh yeah...and thanks for the videos. Have been watching them. And saved to my favs

Thanks for the thoughts. Now that you pointed it out I definitely see it and agree. My whole body looks stiff and stuck together. It all just spins, no transferring of momentum from my body to the club head. Probably has a big effect on my slow club head speed

Here is a video of some swings I took tonight. These are actually some of my best shots of the night. First 3 are with my GI clubs and last two are with some titleist MBs. I've been Playing Golf for: about 3 years on a consistent basis My current handicap index or average score is: about 100 My typical ball flight is: medium height The shot I hate or the "miss" I'm trying to reduce/eliminate is: shanks to the right Videos:

TourEdge Tour Zone wedges or Callaway
dwade247 replied to dwade247's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
Took a snapshot of the TourZone wedges I was talking about. Nowhere on the wedge does it say TourEdge but the sign for the price says TourEdge.Oh and there is no furrel on these wedges. -

I cannot find anything online about them either. If I stop by the PGA store today, I'll snap a pic just to show everyone for curiosity's sake. -
Club set upgrade thoughts for 2014
dwade247 replied to treebound's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
I have been making changes to my clubs this offseason too. I suggest going with used clubs. I have found a couple of steals since I started looking and therefore have saved a ton of money. Since it seems like you wouldn't mind using clubs a few models old I think used clubs would work great for you. Plus shopping for used clubs is kind of fun! Nothing better than finding a gem for 1/4 or less of the original or current model's price tag. It's a lot more fun finding a hidden gem than just opening your wallet up to the big OEMs. At least for me it is! -
Thanks for all the info guys. I was worried about the bounce because many courses I play on are pretty hard. But I went to the pga store today and ask them for some advice. They bent them from +1 upright to standard and said that the bounce was good for me since I didn't have trouble hitting off their mat and lie board which are some of the tightest lies i'll ever encounter. By the way I don't know the loft of my PW but I would guess between 46-48 since it is a box set GI iron set from about 8-10 years ago. I have decided to leave the wedge at 54-15 and see how I play with it this coming season. And I just have to tell you all cause I am so pumped...I picked up a mint odyssey white ice xg #1 putter for $15!

TourEdge Tour Zone wedges or Callaway
dwade247 replied to dwade247's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
Thanks. I think I will stick with the callaways after doing some research of my own. They are c-grind so I should be able to decrease the bounce when opening the face...correct? -
I have a set of Callaway c-grind wedges in 54*-15 and 58*-10. I picked them up used for a great price and that is why I have them. I have no idea what kind of wedges I should have. In the past I have used a PW and a 60*. Obviously I had a huge gap between them (about 50 yards). I got rid of the 60*. I kind of want to bend my 54* to 52* to make my gap better between my PW and 58*. Is this a good or bad idea. Is my 54* designed for the sand, or will my 58* work for the sand? Would 13* of bounce be too much for hitting from fairly tight fairway lies, rendering my 54/52* wedge useless. Would appreciate some advice.
-
So I was looking around the PGA superstore and they had some TourEdge "Tour Zone" wedges for only $20. Obviously a super great price for someone with a small budget (me). Problem is that I can't find out any info about these wedges, like bounce. The PGA superstore website doesn't even have them. Neither does TourEdge's website. Does anyone know where to find info about these? I was looking at them because a couple of weeks ago I picked up a 54*-15 and a 58*-10 callaway vintage forged wedges but I usually play on courses with hard sand and tight lies. Therefore I think the bounce of these wedges may be a bit high. Oh and I think I will miss having a 60* like I used to and used to hit pretty well and have already gotten rid of. What do you guys think. Stick with the callaways or look for something with less bounce and probably a 60* cause I think I will miss it? Do you think the Tour Zone wedges would be any good?
-
Thanks for the advice. I was originally excited by the fact that I finally had some brand name clubs and that they were blades (make me look pro) Ha. But after hitting them today I realize my scores would sky rocket using them. Idk if I am really in the market for new irons right now. I only tried the titleists cause I found them for 2 bucks a piece. I will however start collecting gift cards for my new irons, that I hope to purchase in a year or two. I did hit a callaway xhot (last years model) demo today also. I felt like I couldn't screw up a shot with that thing. Will definitely be on my radar when I have the funds for a new iron set purchase.

Alright guys. Thanks for the replies earlier but I have an update on my iron situation. I went to the PGA superstore by me today to test my Titleist Lite 100 irons vs my GI irons. Let's just say I only hit about 2 or 3 descent shots with the Titleist irons. While on the other hand I hit many more good to descent shots with my GI irons. I'm kind of thinking I should stick with my GI irons. I mean I have always played descent with them as my iron game was the best part of my game. What do you guys think given the new info? Should I work with the blades till I learn to hit them or just learn to get better with my GI irons?
