  1. Thanks for the guidance. I just figured that being able to adjust the loft would make the club more versatile. I like irons more than hybrids so this would be taking the spot of a 5 wood if that helps. I don't want to have to buy 2-3 different hybrids knowing I'll only have one in my bag at any given time. Is that a legitimate concern or would a fixed loft 19* solve my needs?
  2. I used to really struggle with long irons but the 3i and 4i from my Mizuno MP H4 is crazy easy to hit! Even for a higher handicap.
  3. I used to be pretty good at golf when I was younger but after a 15 year break im getting back into it. Last season I went from a 22 to a 15 handicap and I do expect to go lower this season too. But, I admit, I'm not ready to hit those tour level clubs again just yet. I scored a good deal on a Mizuno mph4 3-pw iron set and now I need a hybrid to finish the set. I've been looking at Nike VR-S Covert 2.0 Tour Hybrid but understand its for a lower handicap, like a 5-6 handicap. I love the idea of adjustable lofts so I can use it in multiple situations, but I don't want loft adjustment to necessitate club face change (open or closed) because I've got my natural fade under control lately. Anyone know of a club similar to the Nike VR-S Covert 2.0 Tour Hybrid that would better suit my game? Is this club really that hard to hit considering it's a cavity? The closest golf shop is about 45min so I'm hoping to get a bit of guidance before I walk in and start demoing clubs. Thanks guys.
  4. No I did not get those clubs, and to be honest I wasn't ready to pull the trigger on them, they just seemed to exhibit the amount of wear that most used clubs I've looked at do, so I thought it would be a good example to ask about. I hit the Mizuno MP64's and absolutely loved them. I know they don't "match up" with my handicap, but I did not have a problem hitting them at all. Sure I would get the occasional mishit but usually when I mishit it's so bad that even a cavity couldn't help it. :) But as I hit the range more and more, the mishits are becoming less and less common. Thank you for all the help you guys have given me and I will keep up the search for some nice forged clubs. Maybe if I stick with my no-name irons for another year the MP64's will become more reasonably priced.
  5. Just to make sure I'm understanding correctly, the grooves affect the amount of spin put on the ball, correct? Are there any other areas that "wear out" to the point where the club becomes inefficient, or are the grooves and the sole of the club the main areas that you want to look at?
  6. Here is a quick link to an ebay auction I saw with some Mizuno MP63's. The title describes them as "nice" but they certainly don't look new by any means. I'm just wondering if this wear is reasonable and whether they still have plenty of life left in them. I know forged clubs are softer and wear out quicker so I don't want something that is only going to be good for a year. Would the clubs in this auction be considered good, fair, or poor for used condition? Thanks guys, here is the auction: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Nice-Mizuno-Mp-63-Forged-Irons-Set-4-PW-Dynamic-Gold-S-300-Stiff/371132850751?_trksid=p2050601.c100269.m3464&_trkparms=aid%3D111001%26algo%3DREC.SEED%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D20140813133143%26meid%3D4fbe39f41bd44f46aff67a27548c2099%26pid%3D100269%26prg%3D20140813133143%26rk%3D3%26rkt%3D4%26sd%3D251631664489%26clkid%3D292284856898609349&_qi=RTM1562571
  7. I actually got to hit a set of Titleist AP2 714's at the range as well, I really liked them and didn't really notice any difference between the two except the MP64's seemed a bit heavier. I see a set of AP2 710's for a good price and I've been researching the differences, but are there any major things I should know about the difference between the two?
  8. I used to play a lot but haven't for about a decade. I played quite a bit this year and my handicap is dropping again, but as it stands I'm around an 18. I hit a used set of MP64s at the range the other day and I loved them. I had some bad hits, but even slight misses didn't seem to be penalized too badly. The only problem is the price. I've seen some say the MP60s are close, but the design of the back looks quite different. Are there other muscle back designs that aren't brand new?
  9. About a month and a half ago I had an intercoastal tear which hurt so bad I couldn't even think about swinging a club. My short irons and wedges are fine now and I can take full swings with them with no injury. However, long irons still cause a great deal of problems for me. I know that I tend to hit long irons on the toe of the club, and a 5 iron is what I was swinging when I got the tear and what I was swinging when it hurt me again the other day. Is there someone wrong with my swing to be causing this or have I just not healed up enough? Could stiff shafts be contributing to the problem? I just want to make sure I don't go out there and put myself out of commissionfor another 2 months because iI've barely gotten to play this season as it is. :( Anyone who can help me figure out how this injury occurs would be greatly appreciated.
  10. I didn't mean to sound arrogant if that's how I came off. What I meant is, I would like to have forgiveness but I also want to be able to work the ball in the future and I don't want to have to buy new clubs to do that. I've tried hitting a 4 hybrid but I just cannot ever get a good hit with it, that's why I was leaning more towards a fairway wood because I can hit 3 woods pretty consistently. I'm not sure why I can hit a wood but not a hybrid, but that seems to be the case. My first experience with a hybrid was this season, though. I was looking at the MP60's because they are significantly cheaper than the MP64's, but from what I read the 64's have more forgiveness which is what made me lean towards those despite the higher price.
  11. I started golfing when I was around 6 and played very well for several years but ended up losing interest for whatever reason. 20 years later I'm getting back into it and I'm beginning the process of buying some nice clubs. I already bought a Callaway Razr Fit Xtreme driver (10.5*) and an Odyssey White Hot Pro V-Line putter. My handicap now is around 20 but I've been improving with every game as I get my groove back so I'm looking to get some clubs that I can "grow into" so to speak. I definitely do not want a pure GI iron that will hold me back once I get my swing adjusted again. I have been looking at Mizuno MP64's and when I hit them the other day they felt amazing and not a single mis-hit with them. I've also been looking at Callaway Apex and X-Forged but I haven't had the chance to hit them yet. I've read some people say that the X-Forged and MP64 are almost identical clubs with only negligible differences, but then I see some say that the X-Forged have quite a bit more forgiveness but still allow you to work the ball a decent amount. Are the MP64's really not very forgiving irons? This seems odd to me because I usually mishit about 1 out of every 10 balls at the driving range but when I was hitting the MP64 the worst shot I had was 180yds with a 5 iron, but it still got nice loft, so I figured that they were pretty forgiving irons because it doesn't seem likely that I'm out-performing myself with a completely new and foreign set of clubs. In the mean time I wouldn't mind acquiring a 3 wood and some wedges, though. I know I will have to get them separately anyway, and I don't really know where to start. I'm looking for minimal spin in my wedges, I'd definitely like a higher loft to drop the ball right on target with as little movement after impact as possible. I tried a few Cleveland wedges and really liked them (don't remember the models), but are there some tips you could provide in picking out a fairway wood and wedges? Sorry to ask so many questions at once, I hope it's not overwhelming.
