Myrtle Beach Course Recommendations
CybrSlicr replied to CybrSlicr's topic in Destinations and Travel
I was unable to get to Caledonia - we were not able to leave when we wanted to - I did get to play MB National West - it was OK. I liked the layout - pace was very slow - greens were not consistent at all... -

Thanks MB. Here is what I think I am looking for: One day a premiere course - around $100 or so - I have heard True Blue is a great course One day I will be playing with family who are very high handicappers - so $50 max - suggested so far Myrtlewood Pinehills or MB National South Creek Last day could be anything I would prefer not drive more than 30 min - I would prefer to keep the greens fees around $50. I am also not sure what time I should be looking to play - I am used to getting up and playing at 7:00a but I hear that could be hot down there in late July. Am I better off playing 18 in the evening? Can we walk or will carts be required? I am new to Myrtle Beach golf so I am open to any suggestions... -
I am heading to Myrtle Beach for the last week of July for a softball tournament for my daughter and I will have Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday to play golf. I am looking for course recommendations for a bogey golfer - I love well landscaped courses that are challenging without being punishing. Of course, if there are any "must play" courses, I am open to those too. Thanks in advance.

Taking the range to the course
CybrSlicr replied to bigbear43's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
I always finish the last 15-20 minutes of my driving range session playing a "round" on the range. Start with a tee shot, imagine the result and then take the next shot - play your home course on the range if you will - switching clubs each swing. Each swing is treated like it would be on the course - get behind ball in the "Think Box" and prepare for the shot, then step into the "Play" box and take the swing. In this way, you are practicing the way you play - which should translate to the course. IIRC - this book is where I got the "Think Box" and "Play Box" concepts - very valuable read.... -
I am just getting back into playing after 3-4 years off - very much not in golf shape upon my return :) I have seen some people mention Joey D and his golf specific workout and I work with someone that is a firm believer in the P90 system. How do they compare? Will I get the same golf benefits out of the P90 system that i would get out of Joey D? Any thoughts would be most appreciated...

What's the difference with overrun golf balls vs stock golf balls? I see Golfsmith selling Callaway Tour i(s) overruns for $14.99 a dozen - it seems like a great deal but I am not sure the difference in an overrun. Is it simply cosmetic?

Problem Combining Cavity Back and Blade Wedges
CybrSlicr replied to calibnoodle's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
Well stated. I have Maltby KE4 Cavity back irons and Maltby blade wedges and I am happy with both. They do feel a little different but I have gotten very comfortable with them all - so the difference doesn't bother me at all. I'm willing to bet that a few sessions at the range with the blade wedges and you would begin to feel comfortable also - but that's certainly a personal decision. -
Ladies Clubs Recommendations
CybrSlicr replied to CybrSlicr's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
She swung the Bafflers and the Adams and really likes the Adams a12 os set. Dicks only had the set on the wall so discounted it 10% - $360 for the Adams a12 os set - irons/hybrids all set - now for a lesson or two for her -

5' 3" - I would not call her athletic but not really non-athletic either - very much in the middle - not a very fast swing speed either. She already has Maltby LTech woods I had made for her - 3W, 5W, 7W and 9W that she likes, but crappy irons We are going to Dick's tonight to swing the baffler XL and Adams a12 os sets - they seem to be well regarded as game improvement irons... -
I need some advice for clubs for my wife - she has been playing a couple of times a week with me and I would like to upgrade her cheap Wilson irons. She is not a strong swinger so game improvement irons would be ideal. I also believe she would definitely benefit from hybrids for the 4,5 and 6. I have found a couple of good alternatives but I am not sure which way I want to go: RockBottomGolf has Cleveland 588 MT Ladies 4-PW for $319 - if I get these I need to get a couple of hybrids also Dicks has the Cobra Baffler Hybrids/Irons - 4-6H, 7-PW for $499 Dicks has the Adams A12 os set for $399 Anyone familiar with these sets? Any advice - I would like to stay under $500...

Upgrading from complete beginner clubs
CybrSlicr replied to Shane Cummins's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
Having done exactly what you are doing now (only a few years ago) I will tell you what I did to get down to 90... - Break 100 Now: From Hacker to Golfer in Just 90 Days by Mike Adams - this book was awesome in understanding how to approach the game on the course, club selection, really gave me a lot to think about when I first started working on improving - Lots of practice - get to the driving range twice a week - but this must include chipping work and putting - I usually put in 90 minutes - 30 hitting off the range, 30 chipping and 30 putting - short game is huge to improve scoring - for irons, I would look at an older set of game improvement irons that are on sale now: for example TaylorMade Mens RocketBladez HL Irons are on sale now for $299 for 4-PW at www.tgw.com - you can get a decent set of game improvement cavity backed irons cheap if you are ok with technology that is better than your starter set but a couple of years old - for woods, look for older fairway metals that are discounted - for example Callaway X Hot N14 Fairway Woods are on sale for $80 each for a 3 wood and a 5 wood on www.golfsmith.com (I actually got the X2 Hot Fairway woods for $80 each last week) - I wouldn't worry about a driver right now - 3W off the tee is more controllable and will help your scoring - better off with 250 in the fairway (3W) than 275 in the woods (Driver). - spend money on driving range tokens and lessons - best way to get better The clubs I listed above would get you a decent set of "older" clubs (couple of years old :) ) for under $500 which would still be much better than the starter set you have. As you improve, you can add wedges and a driver, possibly a hybrid or two. But I would start there... Good luck - I enjoyed the process of going from 120 to 90 myself... -
When I first started playing my first 3W was a Callaway Steelhead knockoff - it was perfect for what it was (I still have it today - with a training grip on it) - I did end up buying an actual Steelhead 3W shortly after. The person I played with had knock offs also. I owned TaylorMade irons for a while, and now I really like the Maltby set that I have built for me at Golf Galaxy (not knockoffs but not OEM's). And I will continue to use a pull cart - I have no need to show how much of a man I am by carrying my clubs. Hell - the pros use caddies - they don't carry either. While I am a shill when it comes to marketing (with my Callaway bag, Callaway shirts and Callaway visors), I have absolutely no sympathy for the OEM's when it comes to knockoffs because these companies are certainly not suffering when it comes to club sales, ball sales, marketing, etc. - knock offs exist and people will buy them - they are not hurting Callaway's bottom line... The great thing about golf is you can go out and simply play against the course - no need to be competitive with anyone but yourself - if I am having a good time with good friends and they shoot 73 to my 90, I don't care. If they do it using a TaylorMade, knock off, hockey stick or garden rake I couldn't care less. They can have a caddy carry their bags for them, matters little to me.

So I finally wised up and took a lesson this past weekend. After a frustrating hour I was finally able to hit my Callaway x460 - three solid drives 250 and straight - we will find out this week if I can continue that :) Two simple changes - slowed my tempo down alot - and adjusted my stance - opened my feet up a little and narrowed my stance width and viola - I was able to hit must clubs decently again. before that I had been blocking all woods and hybrids. Seems the 40+ pounds I put on have made me less flexible - so instead of a new driver it is time to walk more and eat better :)

Beginner in need help picking out a set of clubs
CybrSlicr replied to Loons's topic in Balls, Carts/Bags, Apparel, Gear, Etc.
Good question with no easy answer - what is your budget for clubs? Depending on your budget you have a few options... Any complete set you buy for $200-$300 (Woods, irons and putters) is not going to be something you grow off of - it will be a good inexpensive way to start - but realistically, if you find you enjoy the game, you will find yourself replacing all of those pieces quickly enough. Something like this would be more than sufficient for a first set - http://www.tgw.com/customer/category/product.jsp/SUBCATEGORY_ID/59160/refScid/1114 If you do look used - you can find some great deals on clubs that will stay with you for a while - but you are going to get closer to $500 by the time you add in irons, wedges, woods and a putter (plus a bag). You also have the option of having clubs built for you - Golf Galaxy sells Maltby heads and they can build you a custom set of clubs cheaper than buying off the shelf. The nice thing about custom clubs is they are fit for you, and you can only buy the clubs you need to get started - 3W, 3H or 4H, 6-PW, one additional wedge and a putter. This option would allow you to grow your set if you improve as you can add the clubs you need if you decide you enjoy playing. Maltby makes very good club heads so you could have those for a while (I have a set of Maltby irons and I really like mine). With whatever you decide to do, I would focus on just getting the clubs you need - 3W (as a beginner no need for a driver yet), one hybrid (3H or 4H), 6-PW, one additional wedge (54/56 degree or a SW) and a putter - a stand bag, and then invest in lessons. Right now your best investment of cash will be in lessons. Until your swing is in good shape, the clubs themselves won't matter all that much. Not sure if that helped or was actually more confusing :) -
My wife gave me a gift certificate a few Christmases ago and I have played Shenandoah once - it was a beautiful course...

Syracuse area - which means I can walk a decent course on a Sunday morning for less that $30 :)

I currently have a Callaway x460 driver - I am finding I just do not like the club - I am not a fan of the 460cc heads on today's drivers (or at least the height of those driver heads). Are there any decent drivers available with less than a 460cc or shorter profile head? I saw the Callaway X2 Hot is 440cc. I guess I am looking for options like that to replace my x460... Thanks!!!!

Played my first round of golf in the last 2 or so years yesterday morning with a group of guys I used to play with every Sunday (family commitments has made it tough the last few years to play). Trip to the driving range told me my grip after all these years off is way too strong (duck hooking all woods and hybrids) but I still wanted to play so I decided to simply tee off on the 4's and 5's with a 5 iron. Adjusted stance a little for the strong wrist and managed to shoot a 45 on the front using nothing longer than a 5 iron (5 iron got away from me on the back but was still happy with the front :) ) Hole that stood out to me was #7 - 420yd par 4 straight with no trouble - partner who shot 42 on the front used driver and then 5H leaving himself 25 yds off the front - he got up and down for 4. I used 5I and then 5I and was 15yds off the front and chipped up to 4 ft - and of course missed the 4 footer for par :( . It stood out to me because it was a very clear illustration that there are many different ways to play a course. On the phone now making a lesson so I can correct my grip and I can use my driver again :)
