  1. I'm considering getting more intense private instruction to gain swing lag. WOuld you recommend that? Or is it really all about knowing what to do and just coming upon your own personal "Feel" of it by practicing on your own?
  2. click? Is it possible to have a nice no-shock-to-the-grip *click* when casting (releasing wrists before impact)?
  3. Thanks guys. I feel encouraged now. I'm going to try these mental images out... Thanks so much!!
  4. Yup I tried that. At first, does it feel and sound like you're slamming your club into the mat/ball? It did for me, so I wasn't real encouraged by that. Is that the "beginning stages" of developing swing lag?
  5. I have tried everything, including an instructor, to conquer my swing lag problem (or lack thereof). Whenever I take a full swing, i revert to my releasing-the-wrists-before-impact old habits. How did you learn it? Slow motion swings and then gradually speeding up? I am VERY frustrated. I will not give up. But still, every time after practice, I always am sad b/c my camera always shows me not-lagging...
  6. SO yet ANOTHER weakness in my swing is that in my followthrough I do not really extend my arms well. Rather, I am concentrating so much in trying to create swing lag that my club sort of pops up and my arms bend immediately on the followthrough.. So while the arc in my backswing and up to the impact point is wide, it shortens up quickly on followthrough. Are there any drills to learn the feel and technique of straightening my arms on the followthrough?
  7. So I've been practicing with my 7-6-5 irons mostly (beginner) on the practice range turf mats and doing ok. I've decided to try out my swing on the real grass (somewhat thick, not fairway) and find out I do horrendously. I hit it fat and thin etc... and when practicing to increase my swing lag, VERY FAT.... I've played b4, and not really had problems on a course... well.. that is translating what I've practiced on the practice mat to the course.. If i have blades/muscle-backs, should I be practicing on mats or grass? I've read that mats actually deform blades...
  8. I would first look at PGA-certified instructors... That, on paper, will give you the most legitimate pool to choose from. After that, I think it's about personal comfort. I'm on my 2nd instructor. It took me a few $$$ to find out, but once you find the right one, it will be worth it.
  9. p.s.... seriously... your advice is great... and the fact that you became a 30 hdcp down to a +3... I'd take lessons from you... :) Truly inspiring...
  10. I sllliigghhttllyy disagree... Some people know the theory behind a sound golf swing, can see it well, and can relay the feeling of it with drills, etc... THe application of principles, (i.e. the execution) is where it becomes VERY personal. (Person A may relate it to a different "feeling" than Person B). I think rather than researching the INSTRUCTOR, you should be looking for the RESULTS (i.e. testimony of people that have been instructed by the instructor). Not knocking on your method. I agree totally. If I was a soldier, I'd want to be led by a sergeant that's been in the battlefield, not a newb. But, don't overlook someone purely based on his/her actual playing experience. YOu might be missing out. Cheers!
  11. So I've just started taking lessons. I've had about 3-4 lessons and have practiced about 3-4 times per week... In my lessons I always use my 7 iron. In my practice sessions (alone) I tend to do this: I hit a set of 10 balls. If I hit 5/10 relatively straight, I stay at that club. If I hit 7/10 or more straight and consistent, I move up an iron (from 7 to 6 to 5, etc.) I am finding that I am much less consistent... whenever I drop down to the 7 iron, I am always consistent. Don't even ask me about my woods... And I am seriously, for now, ready to give away my stupid driver (for now).... Does it take time to "learn" the other irons? I know this sounds newb... How did you scratch handis "learn" your other clubs?
  12. I just got a set of irons and didn't realize that steel shafts have flex ratings. They are Nike blades and are "Regular" flex. I usually swing a firm flex shaft with my graphite Driver and my previous irons were also firm-flexed-graphite... Am I ok? I figured since they were steel they would be stiffer than my graphites... Obviously I guess it's all by feel.. But am I safe with the regular flex?
  13. Which is better to practice on... Greens that are too fast or greens that are too slow? I know the best answer is BOTH... but I have a rare situation where there are not alot of practice greens around... The one that is most convenient is way too fast...
  14. Anyone know of any? Randalls Island I'm aware of.. but the practice green for putting seems really really fast... Not sure if that'll be good practice... Thanks in advance...
  15. My instructor told me my feet were too narrow too... I keep mine shoulder wide... It seems too wide... but i guess my shoulders are wide... Put a club on your shoulders... measure how wide they are.... and then put that same measurement on your foot width... It helps stability etc. and helps with your swing and various turns, etc...
