  1. I simply use a groove brush after every shot to free the dirt/grass/ball covering from the grooves, wipe them off with a bag towel after and that's it. I see them as tools that will dirty/worn and am not to anal about cleaning every speck of dirt or stain off the clubs. Besides they are not a $1,000 + set, regardless I don't think I would go overboard with cleaning them. Sure if I was about to sell them or knew I was a golfer who changed clubs every year I would be more deligent in my cleaning regime.

    Driving Distance

What do you mean playing off 18? Consider chipping requires more than a good stroke.. I have a poor feeling for swing height and associated distance w/ pitches / chips. What this equates to is flying the green or coming up short. From these locations I get the ball up to the green but often just to fringe because I'm not running it well or able to stop the ball. This leave 2-3 puts to hole out. It is extrememly frustrating but understand most of my range time was spent w/ driver, wood & long irons. What I want to do now is slow down on the range time and spend more time on and around the practice greens at my course. Short game takes a great deal of knowledge and understanding of course managment. Getting familiar with green speeds and associated shots around various contoured greens is taking time to develop, uphill lies, downhill lies, elevated greens. All of these factors add to the complexity of the game, unfortunately it isn't as easy as having a std. chipping stroke. I feel fairly comfortable with distances for sand wedge to 7 iron. The two stroke comment around the green was WASTED shots. So add those to the required shots to hole out. I'm not looking for accolades or pats on the back here, simply suggestions for focusing my game to consistently break 100 on 18, 50 on 9. My goals for this season are modest but reasonable and achievable.

    Driving Distance

So far what I have learned after making this post is that YES its time to focus on other facets of my game, what many of the responders missed when criticizing my drive distance vs. handicap was the point that I give up 1-2 strokes per hole for horrible chipping/putting. At two strokes per hole goofing easy up/and downs I would already establish a 36 handicap!!!! Generally what I was looking for is to find that yes my driving is acceptable and apparently above average. In the early days of my golf career (all years prior to 2008) my swing was way to hard and out of rhythm. I will try and get some swing videos up so you can see the nice relaxed tempo I now employ. Prior to league last year I played 15 times in '08 and probably 4-5 times per year prior to that, these events were typicaly focused on drinking / goofing off. I played a league last year for first time ever and all driving was snap hook after snap hook, I've addressed this by keeping my left arm straight and actually coiling. As a hockey and softball player my elbow was always out of place and I wouldn't coil the core. Especially as a hockey player I liked to try and SMASH the ball. These concepts have been applied to my iron game and driving game, which is fairly free of bad duffs and huge hooks/slices. I often hit the ball straight now but off target and my distance control is shakey. There are a lot of factors involved for a new golfer to overcome. I.E.. what club to hit and at what swing height for varying wind conditions, green conditions, pin locations etc. etc. I am a firm believer that distance doesn't count for squat if you can't consistently put the ball in play. My focus for the coming weeks of golf league is to establish a good tempo for my pitch/chips and continue to practice putting, a lot of strokes are lost on and around the greens. Escpecailly for me who is w/ in lob wedge distance or chip distance on the par 5's I play after two strokes. Is it so hard to believe I can drive and hit irons well while being putrid as short game. Granted I will now focus on keeping record of the drive distances (W/ Roll), all of your comments have been appreciated even the ones that may see beligerent. I have learned to provide more specifics for such a detial oreinted group. As a new member of the forum and golf community I look foward to comming along and learning the ways.

    Driving Distance

I'm curious to see how my drive distance stacks up with others on the site.. I feel like I am not hitting the ball longer and straighter than ever with less "effort" I will not drive the ball with a slight Push-Fade between 250-280 yrds. I feel like for an amateur of 2+ yrs. experience w/ high handicap of 35 I can not start focusing on my short game. I loose 1-2 strokes a hole for poor chipping. Yikes!!
  6. 248 second shot.. its getting old
  7. I've yet to play with a hybrid in my bag, my irons do just fine but I've been contemplating buying one for those trouble shots in the rough w/ 200+ yards to carry. The few times I've used them (pulling from a friends bag) I've hit them well. The modified head shape really seems to carry velocity through the thick stuff. I'm thinking of buying a fairly cheap (Slazenger) Raw distance 3i. But seeing winters on the horizon I will keep my eyes peeled for a good deal on E-Bay for a Taylor Made or other reputable brand. I will say my Slazenger 3w and 5w are very well build and solid striking clubs.
  8. I've been reading tour tempo, once I'm done w/ that I will have to pick this book up and go through it. Any instruction is better than no instruction

    Age

25 Been playing since I was 16 but only couple times a year.. never really learning actually how to play golf. Actually playing regularly for 2 years and this is the first year I'm really focusing on improving my game. dropped my score from always around 60 on nine to 50 or below just this year. Looking foward to playing more golf next year and trying to get my scores in the mid 40's.
  10. Thanks for all the informative reply's, I have felt the difference off the tee with balls like top flight XL 2000's vs. some of the callaway and nike balls. The top flight's feel very hard. And from what I've been reading ball deflection is very important in imparting spin and creating more distance. I think you guys are right and I will have to select a ball that is priced right and plays well. Again I have never really put much though into it but if the ball released from the putter differently from ball to ball how am I suposed to judge putting distance and power properly. The more I put it together I realize my putting is much more consistent days that I'm not loosing balls and switching em up.. I now feel due to the using different hardness balls my putting distance will always vary even w/ the same swing. One site I've been directed towards is www.lostgolfballs.com , they have great deals on used balls. 100 AAAA ProV1's for $1.50 a ball.. not too bad. Danattherock: It does stink loosing 5+ months of golf due winter.. I played this past sunday.. 65 degrees in the first week of november it was a blessing. Actually shot the best round of golf in my life (46). Tough to put the clubs away after a nice 9 like that.
  11. Currently I use whatever ball I can get my hands on.. I have a big bucket of balls I pick up on the course and before heading out for a round will try and pick the "best" balls I have (titleist's, callaway, nike) they are never the same style however.... I always here a guy I play with say (totally Illegal BTW) well I drive w/ such and such ball but have to put with a pro V1. He likes the feel of the pro V1 on the putting surface. Does playing with the same ball all the time have any benefits or is it just hype??
  12. Thanks Kennay that was a great article, I will definatly be saving that one for future reference.
  13. I don't see why adding tape would be of any benifit. Aren't you just changing the engineered weight distribution of the club. This is the first time I've heard of lead tape on golf clubs (granted I'm fairly new to the game) but this sounds fundementally wrong to me... Is it intended to help fix some sort of flaw in your swing by making the head heavier...
  14. Just bought 2 new TM Rac Chrome wedges 3 weeks ago 52 degree and 56 degree.. I agree there is no magical wedge out there. Find some clubs that you feel comfortable with and like the looks of at approach. Going from my ping zing knock of sand wedge to these was a dream... I think mainly my confidence with the new club went up the the low MOI and great feel help immensly.

    Golf Fix

I certainly agree that he does go super fast through the show. I guess I haven't found it problematic because I'm watching it on DVR so after he gives a little tip I can pause the show grab my broom w/ the golf shaft and grip and practice the swing technique. It is no replacement for actual teaching and swing correction from a PGA pro or teaching pro but he does offer some valid tips.. and little things to look at in your game. It may be more valuable for a high handicapper as myself who needs to be reminded / taught about things that may seem menial to seasoned golfers. Besides my buddies on the course & this forum.. he is my only other source of teaching.

    Golf Fix

I've found a great show that packs in loads of tips during a 1/2 hr show. The name of the show is the golf fix and it is on the golf channel mondays @ 7pm EST. Does anyone else watch this show? I've only seen it once and love it. It was the best of tips episode and had great drills for putting/chipping. Using these drills for one day they helped me shoot my lowest score ever (44). I'm usually scoring low 50's.... What are your thoughts on this show.. are there any others out there that you guys watch? best Joe
  17. Par 5 475 yards hit my driver poorly!!! probably only 225 yards. Approached my ball and decided to go for green protected by rear bunker and front right bunker. Water on right from 100 yards in to about 20 yards in. Pulled my 5 wood to get a little more loft to try and stick it. Fortunately hit the shot like I wish I could every time (usually duff the woods). Stuck the ball 20 feet from flag and 2 putted for birdie. No complaints there just wish I could hit those woods consistently
  18. played at moody gardens in Galveston TX with my little brother last Oct 23rd and shot a 103. Almost broke 100 for the first time in my golf career. At 25 I'm a little behind the playing field but hoping to learn good swing fundamentals and tempo to help bring my score down. Goal for 2010 golf season is to consistently break 100.
  19. I'm a project engineer/sales engineer. I work in R&D; and product development for the largest commercial fused fiber optic manufacturer in the world. Looking forward to being part of the community
