Solheim Cup a “Humbling” Experience

The LPGA and LET team captains consider their final selections for the exciting biennial Solheim Cup held next month in the U.S.A.

Since there is no LPGA Tour event this week U.S.A. Team Captain Nancy Lopez took hopefuls out for a practice round in Indiana where the U.S.A. will compete against Europe for the Solheim Cup. This biennial matchplay event is the LPGA’s answer to the PGA’s Ryder Cup and is considered to be one of the most prestigious events in women’s world golf.

It’s the U.S.A. versus the rest of the world. Will America dominate?

Volume Twenty-One

This week’s links are sure to put a smile on your face! Enjoy.

Hittin' the LinksSo the PGA Championship starts on Thursday, and I couldn’t be more excited. I like this major because there is always a no-namer that can contend and even win (see: Rich Beem, Shaun Micheel). This year, my pick is Tiger because I think he’s the hottest player in golf. My long-shot pick is Ian Poulter. I like his game and he’s played well in the majors and on U.S. turf.

Leave your picks in the comments. Now, on to the links.

Morgan Pressel Victorious at 105th U.S. Women’s Amateur

Morgan Pressel wins her first U.S. Women’s Amateur title. Annika Sorenstam claims victory at a self-sponsored tournament in her native Sweden.

morgan_pressel_amateur.jpgMorgan Pressel played two grueling rounds of golf today to win her first U.S. Women’s Amateur title. The first round was played under gloomy skies and over soggy fairways. The afternoon was even worse as storms threatened and rain soaked the golfers. It didn’t even faze Morgan Pressel.

Completely dominating the other 155 golfers during the Amateur, Morgan showed that she was second best to no one this time and was considered to be the favorite at this event. In June, Pressel came in runner-up at the U.S. Women’s Open after being tied for the lead when Birdie Kim sunk an unbelievable bunker shot. Probably a more hurtful defeat occured at the U.S. Girls’ Junior Amateur last month when her opponent chipped in to win from about 40 feet.

Back-Nine Lytes Review

Can an electrolyte pill really help improve your golf game? We tested out Back-Nine Lytes to see if it would help us get through this summer heat.

Back Nine LytesIt seems that whenever I play a round of golf in the summer, I can’t keep my energy level up. I tend to lose my focus and become fatigued around the 14th hole. This is typically caused by dehydration. Most people try to combat that by drinking water. I’ve tried drinking water at every water station on the course and keeping a water bottle with me, but I end up feeling completely bloated and spend most of my time watering trees. Sometimes I’ll turn to a sports drink, but those are a little too syrupy for my tastes, plus I feel like the sugar only provides temporary energy.

John Daly Takes a Full Swing at “Thug” Remarks

PGA Tour Pro John Daly has instituted a lawsuit against the Florida Times-Union newspaper for defamation of character.

john_daly_intimidating.jpgBig John Daly has had enough! After a character assassination by a sports reporter at the Jacksonville-based Florida Times-Union left Daly stunned, Mr. “Grip-It-And-Rip-It” just had to speak up.

The brouhaha began after an editorial written in March 2005 during the Player’s Championship put down fun-loving Daly and playing partner David Duval who has been stumbing around the golf course for over a year.

Accusing Big John of having “Thug Life qualifications” wasn’t enough to tick off Daly. The final straw that broke the ‘Lion’s’ back was the accusation of “smacking his wife around”. At the Buick Open this past week reporters who questioned Daly got a mouthful. “Accusing me of being a wife beater? I had to do something!”

USGA Sued by Glove Maker

H&B, makers of the Bionic Glove line and Louisville Slugger sports equipment, has filed a lawsuit against the United States Golf Association after the company’s Bionic Golf Glove was rejected and deemed non-conforming by the Association’s Equipment Standards Committee.

The Bionic Golf GloveIf the glove doesn’t fit the guidelines, then you must deem it non-conforming. Sure, that may not be as catchy as Johnny Cochran’s famous slogan, but that’s what the USGA has been preaching to Louisville Slugger. Hillerich and Bradsby Co., manufacturer of the Bionic Glove line and Louisville Slugger baseball equipment, has filed a lawsuit in the U.S. District Court against the United States Golf Association involving the Association’s approval of the Bionic Golf Glove.

The Bionic Golf Glove was designed by Louisville hand surgeon Jim Kleinert and advertised as an aid to golfers with arthritis due to it’s ergonomical design. The glove has neoprene between the fingers and on the flexpoints of the hand as well as padding placed throughout the palm and fingers. The glove’s padding is the culprit when it comes to seeking the USGA’s approval. Rules state that the glove be “plain” and meet 12 of the USGA Equipment Standards Committee’s guidelines such as “[the glove] shall not have features such as any other contrivance or device that might assist the golfer in making a stroke.”

Volume Twenty

Forget your morning paper! Grab some coffee and tune into this week’s links.

Hittin' the LinksWhen I saw on my calendar that today is the first day of August, I remembered that I have a golf trip scheduled for the end of this month where my friends and I are playing 36-36-18 in 3 straight days in the heat and humidity of August. My first thought was “Shoot, I’m not going to make it.” When I scheduled this thing, I didn’t really think much past the friends, the gambling (poker at night), and the beer. Now, I’m worried that I’ll not be able to finish.

Does anyone have any suggestions for how to survive this golf trip? Also, any good gambling games are welcomed as well. Please leave comments after this week’s links.

Jeong Jang Claims Wire-to-Wire Win at Women’s British Open

Jeong Jang wins the Weetabix Women’s British Open at Birkdale.

jeong_jang_british_open.jpgPlaying alongside of the number-one female golfer in the world would intimidate most professional tour players but not 25-year old Jeong Jang. Looking cool as a cucumber Jang charged to a four-stroke lead to defeat Annika Sorenstam and all contenders for the crystal trophy posting a 16-under 272.

Jang is not only a first-time winner on the LPGA Tour after a six-year winless streak but like fellow South Korean Birdie Kim (U.S. Women’s Open) has made her first career victory a major championship.

After sinking her birdie putt at the eighteenth Jang could only stand on the green at Royal Birkdale laughing while a flood of well-wishers poured bottles of champagne over her head. When asked how she felt after taking home the shimmering trophy and a first-place check of over $280,000 Jang responded, “Just great. How can I say more than that? I’m still nervous right now…more nervous than before!”
