  1. Currently on ebay there is a Lady Cobra iron set for $80. Callaway Big Bertha and Steelhead driver/woods are $30 each(originally $200-$300 new). Just be sure to buy the same model for driver/wood. But you still need a bag and putter. Perhaps you have a friend or a local First Tee program with an old unused bag? Good advice from all. Absolutely nothing wrong with getting that Aspire set the other guys are mentioning because it includes everything you need. Actually my wife did start that way; but we ended up spending more money to upgrade; thus my advice as it is. My daughter got her old starter set. If your girlfriend is young and a natural athlete; she will learn fast and her competitive spirit will want to improve. If she is just average; a starter set should be just fine. In my limited experience; beginners will find their comfort zone in only 3 or 4 clubs. For my wife and daughter it was the driver, 5 wood, 7 and 9 irons. One last suggestion. Spend $45 for one lesson with a teaching pro. That is enough to get her started on the right track with grip and swing fundamentals before bad habits develop. It also helps remove you from the competitive bossy boyfriend/husband thing.
  2. Generally speaking; most ladies aren't the sporting nuts that guys are. Don't let her lose interest with inferior equipment. You are indeed a lucky man that she is interested in the sport. Ebay is a great source. This inexpensive method got my wife hooked: 1. Used brand name Taylormade/Callaway driver. 5-8 yrs old is fine. 2. Used brand name Taylormade/Callaway 5 wood. 3. New cloned/generic set of Taylormade/Callaway irons(5-PW) If budget comes into play; wait on the driver for a little while. A 5 wood is much easier in getting the ball airborne than a 3 wood. This setup will keep her going for a long time and she will appreciate the brand recognition at a budget cost. Callaway Preowned's website will tell you the year model for a Callaway club you find on ebay. Good Luck,
  3. Thanks for the comments and suggestion. Six years ago I had a monitored swing speed of 110mph. But I had a shoulder problem and rehab.....so no doubt that plus the fact that I just turned 50 has probably slowed me down. What tricked me was playing the trial round with the 6.0 rifled demo 6 iron. I was hitting it 165-170 yards....which is about right for me. But I guess playing a whole round with the whole set is perhaps tiring me out a little. I settled down a bit and shot 4 over on the back nine but it was an extremely short course. I am capable of making solid contact.
  4. I bought a training aid that has completely changed my putting scores. It is about $70. It is called the putting arc. (hopefully this doesn't break forum rules). I loaned it to a friend and it also dramatically improved his putting. I used it at home on a carpeted floor for about 10 minutes/day for a week. When my putting starts heading south I just pull it out of the closet to get the form back. You won't regret buying it. But to directly answer your question..... I currently use a Voodoo putter and fell in love with it at the golf shop. Even on artificial turf in a store I believe you will recognize a good "feel" when you find it. Good luck, Mike
  5. Looking for a little better accuracy so I bought a used set of Callaway X-20 Tours with 6.0 rifled shafts. I had used a demo 6 iron and played fine with it. On a side note...I have Callaway hybrids and an X-Tour 3 wood with Uniflex shafts. I hit those quite well. Can hit the irons straight...but sometimes hitting a fade. I am guessing this may be coming from the less offset. So I am thinking I can probably improve my swing enough to deal with the fade. Please correct me if I am wrong. My main issue is a major loss of distance. I hit my old Tour Exotic stiff 8 iron 150 yards with a decent swing. With the X-20 Tour; I can barely hit it 135-140 yards. I am guessing the heavier shaft is affecting me. I am considering these 3 options: 1. Change to a uniflex shaft which is about 10-15 grams lighter because I hit the hybrids good with the uniflex. 2. Change to a 5 or 5.5 rifled shaft. 3. Change to a plain X-20 iron with a lighter shaft. Which one? Any help is appreciated, Mike
  6. Use to play the Callaway HX Hot for good distance. Now I prefer the Pro-V1 for a little back spin on the green. You can get Pro-V1's relatively cheap at used golf ball outlets on the internet.
  7. www.hsvpoa.com . This is a retirement community in Arkansas. Some nice courses.....check it out if you are in the area.
  8. I'm a pharmacist. Would rather play golf full time.
