Volume Forty-Six

Maybe this week’s column will get me a spot in next year’s Pebble Beach Pro-Am.

Hittin' the LinksThe Pebble Beach Pro-Am is one of my favorite golf tournaments to watch. I really like seeing how good the celebrities are. There were a few I thought looked quite good. Thomas Gibson could smoke it and Justin Timberlake and Carson Daly both looked like they knew what they were doing.

Anyway, on to the links.

F2 Wedge Review

Can a club really help you you hit the ball to within 10 feet of the pin twice as often, from 100 yards in.

Face Forward TechnologyAccording to Face Forward Technology there has not been a major innovation in wedges in the past 50 years. Taking a look at all the wedges in golf shops today and you’ll surely agree that although there are subtle differences that none really stand out.

Enter the F2 Wedge and its radical design. In fact, the first time I had these out on the range a few passers-by even paused to take a look at this odd looking club. According to the company “both human testing and robotic testing proves that the F2 gets you into the Scoring Zone more often than any other wedge tested.” We’ll see about that…

Pebble Beach Pro-Am Preview

Phil Mickelson has a chance to defend another title this week but must fight off many top player and rising rookies to do so.

AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-AmIt’s time again for the stars to shine this week at the 2006 AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am in beautiful Monterrey, California. The event dates back to 1937 with Bing Crosby hosting the “Crosby Clambake” and brings top pros from the PGA Tour and A-list celebrities together. Over the years the tournament has become wildly popular with fans as the tournament is a much of a show as it is a tournament with stars like George Lopez, Samuel L. Jackson, Ray Romano, Bill Murray and even The Donald. The tournament also allows the long ball hitters to shine and history tells us so since six of the last eight winners have been big hitters. After J.B. Holmes earned his first win at the FBR Open last week, fellow big hitters Bubba Watson and Camilo Villegas are chomping at this bit for their big break.

Volume Forty-Five

Grab some coffee and a chair and tuck in to this week’s edition of Hittin’ the Links.

Hittin' the LinksI loved watching J.B. Holmes win this weekend. It’s great for the game to see some young guns play well on the Tour. He and Bubba Watson have created what seems to be the beginning of a change in the game and it couldn’t be better in timing. Just think about how Tiger is 2-for-2 and these guys are starting to gain confidence and experience. This could get interesting.

Now, on to the links.

FBR Open Preview

Can Phil Mickelson become the first back-to-back winner of the FBR Open since Johnny Miller did it back in 1974-75?

FBR OpenSo the 2006 FBR Open is starting in my town this week and I am glad that I’m out of town for it too. I love my home town and I love this event since it’s start as the Phoenix Open however I’m not one for crowds and boy oh boy does this event draw a crowd. Dubbed “The Greatest Show on Grass” people come to the event to have a good time and the PGA Tour players know this well.

From Player to Hacker, is There a Real Collector?

A word to you heathens of the links, use your money for lessons before investing in expensive weaponry, armaments in which you have no idea on how to wield.

Thrash TalkMy final year at Kent State University, home of professional tour pros like the 2003 British Open Winner Ben Curtis, PGA Tour rookie John Mills, Nationwide Tour veteran David Moreland IV, and second-place finisher at this past weekend’s Movistar Panama Championship Kevin Gessino-Kraft, I had the opportunity to student teach at a middle school for an entire semester in order to receive that all empowering piece of paper, a diploma. I found the experience quite rewarding, teaching you see is my profession, but I digress.

It was while I was under the tutelage of a highly esteemed educator during my student teaching program when he had told me he collected PING putters. I knew about hickory shafted clubs, mashies, spoons, and the like – those are antiques and highly praised amongst collectors. However, I was not aware of the collect-ability of PING putters.

Volume Forty-Four

This week we’ve got Jack Abramoff, golf pyramid schemes, and a Hunter S. Thompson article in the links.

Hittin' the LinksSo, the PGA Merchandise Show has come to an end. Anyone have the biggest winners or losers of the show? I would be like a kid in a candy store if I was able to attend this. All the gear!? Can you imagine?!

While I scour the web for all the coverage my little heart can take, I’ll leave you with the links.

Pressel: Great Game, No Nickname

If there is any one LPGA golfer ready to take center stage it is none other than Morgan Pressel. But why hasn’t anyone come up with a more appropriate term of endearment for such a talented golfer?

Morgan Pressel UpsetNow that Morgan Pressel has been granted her request to become a full-fledged member of the LPGA it’s time to give her a nickname.

Paula Creamer is the “Pink Panther,” Michelle Wie is “The Big Wiesy,” Greg Norman was “The Shark” and some guy named Eldrick has cornered the market on “Tiger.” A popular golfer with such a big presence should have her own identifier.

New nicknames are turning up when talking about Morgan like “Pretzel” but these are unimaginative to say the least. I believe that by the end of this article either myself or one of our readers may just come up with something that really epitomizes the spunkiness and individuality of this impressive teenager.

SwingJuice Energy Drink

We all know hydration on the golf course is important. Let’s see if SwingJuice, a golf-focused energy drink, can find its way into the drink holders on our golf carts.

SwingJuiceThere’s been a change in the way players play and prepare for a round of golf. It used to be that players would eat a couple hot dogs and wash those down with a few cans of beer. There was no real thought to how nutrition might affect the player’s score. As many of us are aware, proper hydration can help a player offset fatigue and finish a round strong.

For me, a couple bottles of water throughout a round can get quite boring. Normally, I’m grabbing any type of sports drink I can to supplement the water intake. Prior to the 2005 Newport Cup, I was introduced to a new product, SwingJuice.
