Do putter inserts "go bad"?

I'm in the market for a new putter, and having never had a putter with an insert, I'm wondering how they hold up over time. Any of you kind folks who have put an insert putter through its paces and then some, your feedback would be appreciated. Thanks!

I have used an Odyssey WH #1 for several years and I doubt the properties changed at all or will so anytime soon.

I've ditched inserts after a few years of farting around...went back to a milled, Anser-style putter. If it was good enough for ages 5-28, it should be good enough for me at age 30. My putting stats are way up, which is making up for the fact that I've hit it terribly this year. :-)
