  1. Ive had this discussion with golf buds alot. I spent a few hundred bucks on a set of clubs 2yrs ago when I picked the game back up, but was using an old putter I had from years ago. Since then Ive bought a new driver, cost me about $150. Spent about $100 on a couple of hybrid clubs. Just a few weeks ago I bought a new set of TM Burner irons, cost me about $340. Bought a new golf bag for $100 this year. But Im still using that putter I bought at Play It Again Sports back in the mid-90s for $10. Its a Dunlop, made of pewter (I believe), no insert, about as basic as you can get. I dont think any putter in the world, no matter what it cost, is going to make me putt better than I do with that one. Im not saying Im a great putter by any means, but sticking a $200 putter in my hand isnt going to make me instantly better. Almost everyone I play with uses Odyssey and I dont think I putt any better or worse (ok sometimes worse) than they do during any given round.
  2. Still working on a box of Top Flite Eagles I bought last year and a box of Top Flite D2s I bought last year. Have a cpl sleeves each of those. I actually stopped at Target today to see if I could find another box of Eagles but alas all gone. They were on clearance a few weeks about for about $8/box of 24. I should have bought several boxes but I passed. Once I run out will probably pick up a box of Nike Mojo even though I dont especially like the way they feel coming off my putter. Yes, I play cheap balls. That way I dont feel so bad losing them.
  3. Id long given up on my standard 4 iron with my old set and had gone to a 4 hyrid which I hit decent when I catch it flush. I was crushing the ball with the burner 4 iron, completely surprised how pure I was hitting it. 5, 6, 8 in a row with that 4 iron, just pure bombs dead straight. Man do I wish I could do that even half the time on a consistent basis :)
  4. Hit these for the first time on the range the other day and wow, was I AMAZED at what I saw and how they felt. A massive improvement over the budget Adams irons Ive used the last 2yrs. I was absolutely striping the ball for about 30min. Didnt hit 1 singular bad shot. After that, however, like Im prone to do, I lose my form, my swing begins to feel weird, nothing feels right, and I suddenly cant hit the ball at all. But that first 30min showed me what I can do with these clubs when I finally get some consistency. Completely happy with my purchase.
  5. Max power said exactly what I would have said, although he probably knows a heckuva lot more than me :) I use a $10 putter I bought 20yrs ago. I realize they have made alot of technical advances in materials and so forth, but I do not think a $200+ putter is going to make me putt any better. And from what Ive seen with the guys I play with, I dont putt any better or worse than they do. And nearly 100% of the guys I play with use Oddyssy. Save the $ on a putter, get something fairly inexpensive that feels decent, primarily the shaft length. As far as a driver goes, get an older model as Max suggested. 2yrs ago I bought a Burner Draw 2007 model for about $100. The same could probably be had for $75 now. I have no intention of upgrading any time soon as I very happy with the performance and result. I dont feel like something newer would benefit me in any way. Hybrids are just long iron replacements. I have a 3 and 4 Adams hybrid that I hit alot. Usually I use the 3 in place of my 3w because I just cannot hit the 3w from the fairway. And I get nearly the same distance, granted Im a crappy player so take that with a grain of salt. Adams practically (or literally??) invented the hybrid and they are very respected for their clubs. I got mine for about $50 each from rockbottom. Good luck
  6. ay caramba! Never fails. I ordered yesterday, now Rockbottomgolf has these for $299!!!!! So if Id bought from there Id have saved about $90 total. Thats 2 rounds of golf!!!! Paulballs is sad
  7. 1-3, depending on what my driver is doing on any given day. If Im driving the ball really good 1. If I start to lose my drive, which generally is a large push to the right I can lose a few off the tee box. I play cheapo Top Flite Eagles on Nike Mojo so I dont worry too much about it. I wont spend more than a couple minutes looking before I take a drop.
  8. I ended up going with the regular flex over the uni or stiff. I doubt my swing speed is anything to write home about, Im just your average weekend warrior that does well to break 100 consistently. I got the 4-AW set from Hurricane for $339. I saw many sets on Ebay for considerably less, but almost all were only 4-PW. Then to add an AW separately would have added another $40 or so, so the net savings was only about $60. Yes, $60 is $60, but then the bag I also bought wouldnt have been shipped free, so throw in another $12 for shipping on that and now Im around only a $50 savings total. So I opted going with a dealer instead of individual on Ebay.
  9. So Ive settled on getting these irons but am a bit confused about the shafts. One site has regular and stiff available while another has only uniflex. I was at Golfsmith the other day and demoed a set and they were the uniflex. The guy there said uniflex is in between regular and stiff. I felt like I was swinging that club and striking the ball very good, so I suppose I prefer to stick with the uniflex. But is regular that much different? The site that only has regular/stiff is the one Id prefer to order from, because they also have a bag I want and if I buy the clubs and bag at same time it eliminates the shipping cost. Lastly, does Golfsmith ever price match online prices? The BP irons at Golfsmith are "on sale" for 399, plus another 35 for tax here in TX. I can get them shipped to me for 340 online. Thanks edit - also, without actually getting on a computer diagnosis of your swing, how would you know if you need stiff shafts? I know its all about swing speed, yada yada, but just for joe average hacker would it ever be advisable for go with a stiff shaft? My driver is stiff and I hit it fairly well. Previous to that I had a driver with a regular shaft and I couldnt hit that to save my life. But I presume a graphite shaft on a driver is somewhat different than steel shafts on an iron? So in a nutshell, stiff shafts on these irons, pros vs cons?
