Cheers was a fantastic series and the spin-off, Frasier, was pure genius. Home-grown high-quality material in the comedy genre is much thinner on the ground here in the UK, unfortunately, although there have been some high spots.
Here's a TV-related subject : great shows that get canned too early. My example here would be "Carnivale" which I believe only made it to a second series before the plug was pulled, ruining what was planned to be a 6-season story. I realise a show has to be profitable, but I do sometimes wonder whether ratings kill off an idea that could mature into something amazing.
