  1. Folks, Appreciate if you could help me with some experiences , swing thoughts, suggestions on the transition problem I am struggling with for months now. I tend to yank my scapula too much in the back-swing, resulting in my elbows going behind the shirt seam and cutting across the line at times. The resulting down-swing transition is steep as my elbow gets stuck and then I compensate and come under the plane etc. Thanks for watching.
  2. Thought of sharing how I keep my stats and how it helps drive my practice strategy. I started really playing in November 2010 - before that I knew how to swing the club and played about once a year and scored between 95-100. I usually keep track of the majority of my scores and I think the volumes now are sufficient to be statistically significant. My home course is a Par 72, CR - 71.4, SR - 137, 6900 yards with only 2 Par 5s and 2 par 3s. So the GIRs are likely to be a little lower. Here are the three aggregate stats I keep track of. 1. Handicap Trend : 2. Year over Year Aggregate Stats : 3. Efficiency Stats : What this helps me in is setting realistic goals and practice strategy around it 1. Based on my handicap trend line and also accounting for the non-linearity as handicaps get lower I should target for around 4.0 USGA Index by the end of the year. 2. My long game sucks at my handicap level, my goal should be to hit 9 GIRs average in my home course, by the end of the year bringing it to around 50%. 3. Putting average goal should be around 30. I miss more than 50% of my putts 5 feet and below, that's where I need to put my time in. 4. Short game is not too bad - but the goal should be about 55% U&D; and 45% Sand saves, but this statistic is also likely to be better at the same effort level if my GIR or near GIRs improve. So I think my practice strategy should be 1. 65% long game 2. 20% putting 3.15% short game Appreciate comments, any other statistics that you think one needs to follow and insights.
  3. Absolutely correct. I wasted 6 months with a "PGA" certified instructor from UK who wanted to induce lag by holding the wrist angle. Lag is a derivative function of your swing mechanics falling into place, as others have noted. If somebody is trying to get a silver bullet for lag - it's not gonna happen
  4. Is there a reverse hip turn in Rory's swing at about P8 ( 00:28 in the video clip), which would lead me to believe that there is hip turn deceleration in the downswing around impact. Does that help in more efficient energy transfer in the kinematic sequence ? think Rose and Philips from TPI also talked about this some time. Quote: That's an insane shoulder turn on the backswing
  5. just ordered - how long for the international shipments to reach India ? Doesn't say anything on the site
  6. Folks, Here's the work-in-progress swing after a month on evolvr. Thanks to James and Mike for all the advice. Jan 2012 Feb 2012 Appreciate your critique and comments please.
  7. Thanks for all the encouragement and advice people, and bunkerputt Btw , ballstrikerbob, I thought it was a super looking swing
  8. Absolutely agree. Guess that's what I said initially one thing at a time. The way I like to work it is with a plan . So perhaps look at Some sort of goal on the DS and followthrough with specifics. This should translate into a reasonable achievable time frame, which in turn should work out into number of practice hours per week/day , with some checkpoints/milestones and progress measures.I know, It does not work out that way always but i think it probably is good to be metric driven I would imagine we could work the plans etc through evolvr
  9. Thanks gentlemen. Trying bunkerputt's steeper shoulder turn and keeping head still while pushing hip/pelvis forward. Its too early to see any substantial difference after probably 200 balls on the range. Still losing power early I think , but a wee bit better than before - although it feels weird. Tried cbrians rolling the forearm to open the club face a bit - but DS gets screwed up . but is this gonna take 2 months ? :( Also I am on evolvr now . mvmac, is it OK to put the analysis of my swing from the evolvr on the thread here , so maybe others can perhaps benefit ? Anyways here's todays DTL and FO - hope the camera views are right.
  10. Thanks bunkerputt. Let me try a thing at a time. I will start with the steeper shoulder turn first. Interestingly my local instructor says that the primary cause - which is inconsistent strikes - is inside takeaway . Also the swings in the video were with a TS 8 iron and the shots were going fine - 145 yards , perfect trajectory with a push draw. Wouldn't I top the TS if I were casting or OTTing ? Also some amateur analysis on the analyzr student version seems to show that in the downswing I am coming under the plane - does that mean cast ? Anyways let me work on the shoulder turn first in the range and get the videos back up after that.
  11. Folks, Appreciate if you could critique my swing. Couple of things I have been fighting with 1. Inside takeaway 2. Follow through / right forearms way under left shoulder at finish 3. Head movement and body turn after impact. 4. Too much lateral body movement after/at impact 4. Need more shaft lean at impact I am thinking of getting onto evolvr.. DL FO
  12. well about golf starts at about 45K. Also in the similar category is Full Swing http://www.fullswinggolf.com You can also look at p3proswing which is pretty good at 23K for the studio version, http://www.p3proswing.com hope that helps
  13. Any plans for a web version. That way, there would be no installs etc. By technically challenged people like me. Also, the management of the stats can be done centrally and administered across a wide section of thesandtrap community. Can make it easily accessible over the iPad, iPhone etc. Maybe charge a monthly subscription for managing, maintaining and advising subscribers based on the stats.
  14. Visuals and motion based assimilation is one of the best ways to get kids going, especially the ones with auditory handicaps. Couple of things that he has gotten to like is watching the PGA tour telecasts with Dad. The other thing is the golf games on playstation with the motion controllers. This is great with the kid avatars which he can relate too. I think the video with the v1 pro will also work great, as he can see his swing and compare with other swings. Maybe got to search you tube to see if there is anything out there.
  15. you may want to look at aboutgolf. I know it's pricey, but I think it's real cool http://www.aboutgolf.com/
  16. That's a great idea inthecup , In fact I do have the Casio FC-100 for my swing analysis, I guess that's the one you are talking about. I will get a copy of the v1 pro home and get going. I sure do understand and commiserate with you, seeing some of the frustrations my son goes through day-in, day-out without being able to express himself. I hope he loves golf and becomes a confident young child and a future great golfer. Thanks much,
  17. sure, I play the driver off the deck for low flight late fade shots with great results when it is required. One of our toughest holes is a long par 4 dog-leg right. Just at the dog leg is a huge sprawling tree, with it's branches covering half the fairway. If you are right of the fairway or on the fringe off the tee shot, you either 5W over the tree or try the driver under the tree to hit the green - about 210 yards. Have used the driver 9 out of 10 times successfully either hitting the green or around the green. I think the driver of the deck can be a great tool in some situations.
  18. My son is 6 years old and I have just started getting him into golf. Unfortunately, he is a moderately hearing impaired and so getting to communicate to him is a challenge. Put him in a kids golf clinic, but he got frustrated as he feels out of place and its difficult for him to understand. So, I usually take him out to the range and I must say when he gets into it he hits about 100 balls non-stop. I was also quite amazed to see him hit bunker shots out into the chipping green. He also played a 9 hole with me a couple of times and seems to enjoy it. Because, it's difficult to get through to him - he gets frustrated at times and gives up. Any advise people...
  19. yup pretty much hybrids from 3 thru 5 or a choked down 5W.
  20. I really started golf late at 47, before that a hacker playing once in a while. Have been playing and practicing for the since Nov. 2010 and into it for 9 months now. While I would love to be a scratch sometime, I think given the late start and the age it is highly unlikely anytime. However having said that, I think it is possible to get into low single digits in a reasonable timeframe. Handicap progression Nov 2010 21 Dec 2010 17 8th Dec 2010 Scored 79 in tournament round ( This I think was a freak case of breaking 80) Jan 2011 16.1 Feb 2011 15.3 Mar 2011 14.5 Apr 2011 13.8 May 2011 12.5 Jun 2011 11.8 Jul 2011 11.4 In terms of my game. I am not a long hitter but fairly consistent and straight 1. Drives - 250 yards average, 80% FIR 2. Approach shots - 5,6 iron game needs improvement/woods are fine - 25% GIR 3. Pars - about 9 per round 4. Short game - good, within 10 ft of pin from 60 yards in 5. Putts - 32 avg/round 90% of the time I blow-up one hole with a triple and sometimes quadruple bogey, which really gobbles up my score. In terms of the club course I usually play - it's fairly tough, CR - 72, Slope - 137. Length from white - 6900 yards. Narrow fairways with trees and water hazards on sides on almost all fairways; small greens. Playing routine - 14 hrs practice/wk - (50% short, 50% range of which 90% on mid irons and 5% on driver). 2 X 18 hole rounds a week. Coaching review once in three months. Local club tournament once in 3 months. Do you think it is possible to get under 5 handicap if I continue the same way ? If so what would you think would be a reasonable time frame ? Look forward to your comments.
  21. Thanks gents. Let me work on figuring out the swing flaws. Cast/OTT is for sure one of the problems. Let me try to post a set of videos and see what you fellas think.
  22. blackxpress , I am also consciously trying to turn the hips and let the arm pull through and resist the temptation of hitting from the top. But it is not consistent. Sometimes the hip turns too quick, blocking the swing and sometimes the tempo goes for a toss. So , I started with the half swing lag drill with a 9 iron and the swing looks fine. But again, when I go for a full swing later with the longer irons, trying the same stuff it's not consistent. I tried using a metronome and tried to set it to my swing tempo and it does help, but again when the metronome is off , the swing becomes inconsistent - so goes the struggle :(
  23. ping k-15 5 (27 deg) and 6 (31 deg) hybrids , TFC -149 graphite shaft regular. I got sick of trying with the normal taylormade RAC HT 5-6 irons of mine. I also think it's maybe a lag issue and a cast and/or OTT issue. funny it happens with the irons only - and again not so much on the range, but more so on the course. I have been trying the pump drill - looks fine on the video replays , but back to square-one while striking on the course.
  24. Usually 40-50% mishits, either fat or hook or push off the fairways for the 5-6s Ballflight off the deck is no problem with both the 5-6 hybrid irons , ballflight usually high Flight is usually high to mid-high off the faiways with the 5-6 if hit right. Driver swing speed between 90-95 Gear - Driver Titleist 907 D2, Fujikura Regular, 10.5 3W,5W - Ping i-15 TFC 149 graphite Regular 5,6 Ping K-15 hybrid irons, TFC 149 graphite Regular 7,8,9,PW Taylormade RAC HT graphite Regular GW,SW -Titleist Vockey 52 and 56, bounce 11
  25. Folks , I seriously took up the game last November with an initial goal of breaking into single digit handicap in a reasonable time-frame. Prior to that I was basically hacker with sporadic play and more interested in the 19th hole than the 18 holes. Started off at USGA index of 20 and in about 9 months gotten to 11.8, with an average score now of about 85 ( my club has a high slope rating of 137 ) Put in a a fair amount of practice , of about 14 hours/week on the range ( 50% chipping green, 50% woods and irons) along with my caddy-coach, who is a 2 handicap + two rounds every weekend. Not a big hitter, but fairly consistent . Driver - 250 yds with about 80% FIR, 3W - 200, 5 iron 155-160, PW- 105. Short game is OK. What I have been struggling with are two things 1. Approach shots with irons .Especially 5,6 and then 7. Tried changing to K-15 hybrids 5and 6 , and has helped a little but still ways to go . I really don't know what to do here and it is really frustrating. 2. Tend to cast at times and/or OTT , though it has gotten better after conscious practice - nonetheless it happens mostly with the 5 and 6s still quite often. Strangely, it rarely happpens with my woods or driver or the shorter irons ( I try to monitor this with my CASIO FC-100 video replays). Any help, advise deeply appreciated in helping me get over this hump and getting to break 80.
