  1. I've been to Myrtle a couple of times with the family on holiday. I think it's a terrific golfing break - there are so many quality courses to choose from. BNlongdriver, have they increased the green fees at Myrtle recently? it's 4-5 years since I've been, but we used to average $35 using coupons from hotel lobbies. don't they use this system anymore? I'm trying to talk my non-golfing (but very knowledgeable wife) in to going to Myrtle in September. However, she's very keen to visit Italy this time, so I may have to wait until next year. I'll take you up on your offer - what are the 'must plays' in the Grand Strand (or anywhere in Myrtle really).?
  2. As a result of attempting to achieve a one plane swing this season, my handicap has tumbled from 19 to 13. Being pretty small in stature (5' 6") my local pro always advised my to "stand as tall as possible" over the ball. It wasn't until I got a video camera for my birthday that I realized just how pronounced my two plane swing was. Since then I've been working away on my own, with a good hip bend being key to my 'new and improved' set-up. Consistency and accuracy are two words which were never associated with my game in the past, but things are changing. Now, if only I could chip... and putt...
  3. Thanks for that Eric. There are times when I feel 36 wouldn't be enough, but I play off 13. (I've just figured out how to alter my profile)
  4. I'll drink to that! A pal of mine is a member at Dalmahoy, near Edinburgh, where they have recently upped the yardage to 7475 For us mere mortals, that's one heck of a slog!!
  5. I have recently decided to retire my old set of John Letters T2's. (don't ask...) So far I've tried out the Wilson Staff Pi5's which I liked, and the outgoing Callaway X16's which I didn't like. The new 735's look to be pretty much what I'm looking for, and I'm not too fussed whether it's satin or chrome finish. I'm assuming the 735's will give me a lower, more penetrating ball flight with lots of feel.
  6. I was discussing this topic today with my regular fourball (after we'd sorted the rest of the World's ails) and we've come to the conclusion that Tournament Directors should place far greater emphasis on accuracy. Narrower fairways, strategic bunkering and punishing rough would probably be at least as effective as having a softer compound ball. I played a course today where I had to use the 15th club (the head) quite a lot more than usual - it wasn't simply a case of reaching for the driver at every hole. And you know what? I really enjoyed it :)
  7. I caught the tail-end of a radio coversation in which Tom watson was espousing the benefits of producing a 'Pro's-only' softer compound ball which would reduce distances by 20%. The rationale is that sooner or later (probably sooner), most courses will run out of Real Estate. Take The Open at St. Andrews this year as an example - they tried to make the course 'Tiger Proof', but of course, it didn't make the slightest bit of difference, either to Tiger, or the rest of the field. Even on an amateur level, modern equipment allows players to burst through the natural defenses of golf courses. Recently I played some courses that I hadn't played for many years, and I was amazed at how my increased hitting power had altered the characteristics of the courses. Do you think this plan is the way forward, or do you think that like motor racing's F1, engineers will soon have the Pro's hitting the ball as far as ever?
  8. I'm a member at East Kilbride golf Club in Scotland. The green fees are around £600 (approx $1100) per year. The 'Joining fee' is 3x the annual subs. This represents a lot of golf for the money. It's a pretty good course with a reasonably well appointed club-house. We have excellent practice facilities, and the course is rarely closed - even in winter. There are plenty of Municipals within a 25 mile radius which are all really busy. It's really cool to be able to drive up to the club, confident that you'll get a tee-off time almost immediately.
  9. Couldn't agree more about Tiger - he's the consumate professional. I was kinda hoping that old Monty might have done the Biz on Sunday, but I was pleased to see Tiger making inroads on Jacks record 18 majors. It was also nice to see Freddie Couples getting in amongst the Big Boys again.
  10. How're you doin' Brett? Although originally from Edinburgh, I live in a wee town about 15 miles south east of Glasgow. We've had a fabulous summer so far, and all the courses are in tip-top condition. I play in a number of 'Seniors Open' club competitions, which means we get to play some pretty good courses for very little money.
  11. Hi. sorry if this is an old turnip of a topic - I'm not much good at navigating my way round forums. I just notice that some very tasty drivers - such as the Cobra SZ440 are being offered now at very cheap prices (£99 from American Golf Discount). How do I find out what drivers will be banned by the PGA (and when). Will any of these clubs still be legal at club competition level? I was at The Open this week, and should have been able to find out there, but it's difficult to form a sentence when your tongue is hanging out gawping at all the luvverly new equipment on show
  12. Hello to everyone - glad to be part of the forum. I'm a mid handicapper who after years (well, decades actually) of playing this great game, I am finally putting some decent rounds together. When not golfing, it's all the usual family stuff - I have three girls, two grand-children and a 3rd on the way. Any time left to me is spent playing and rehearsing with my long time pals in a Rock group. There's none of have much talent (or hair ) so if we're going to Rock the World, we'd better get a move on. Kind regards to all Pete.
