  1. Posting worked fine for me!
  2. I did a lot of reasearch and found a good deal on a set of Wilson Pi5 irons (ebay). This is my third set of Wilson irons. The other two where bought at thrift shops missing critical irons... The last, oversized perimeter weighted non-pro, non-staff Wilson irons came with a much needed 3 and 5 wood, but to my horror the 4 and 7 irons where missing($15, what can you do). I love these clubs and have shot some good rounds, and they encouraged me to stay with Wilson to fill in my set. Without actually having tried them, I found out that the Pi5's are set up a little longer (and a different lie angle) than optimal for me. I am going to have them customized/fit for me. If you play them, please tell me what you think: What, if any modifications have you made to the clubs? What grips/shafts did they come with? Do you find the 3 iron useful (Have you replaced it with a Hybrid?)? Do you think your game has improved with these clubs? What is your handicap? How long have you been playing? What did you have before? How much did you pay for them?
  3. Don't forget craigslist for looking for used clubs. If you live in a major metro area there will be lots of stuff. Be patient, check every day, new listings all the time. Craigslist usually has clubs in several categories: 1. Garagesale fodder... really old, really beat clubs that have been kicking around in somebody's garage forever... usually mismatched grab-bag... usually with 1 club worth MAYBE keeping :) Then again, a complete yet beat up set for $20 might be able to help you get started... then again, beat equipment is it's own punishment ;) I started three seasons ago with some ancient (50's or 60's) power built clubs rescued from a dumpster... 2. Clubs that somebody bought and then never really played with... usually a good deal, especially if they just want them gone... this can be really a deal, but not if they are trying to recover 100% of what they paid. Ask them if they will wheel and deal. 3. Cast off clubs from somebody upgrading. lots of wear, but good clubs, usually pretty close to retail value, but maybe negotiable. 4. High end clubs from people like are on this website... usually not much cheeper than used retail. I've seen brand new clubs that someone won in a contest for 1/2 the list price. There are some consignment shops that specialize in used golf stuff. ALSO For the diving range, or playing a par-3... you usually don't need a complete set! For a Par-3 usually you can get by with a Putter, a wedge, and a 9 or 7 iron. My first two sets I got from Junk shops ($10 and $15) missing important clubs. They also usually sell loose drivers, but I have never found one worth keeping, I bought a messed up Viper, just to practice driving, I didn't fee bad beating it on the practice mats, and dirt like I do, my Nike SQ! If you have never played a par-3 or gone to a driving range, grab a couple $5 thrift store beat clubs and go to town. Or rent them at the par-3. Even if the equipment does you wrong, you will find out if you like it or not... Everybody is going to jump on me about developing bad habits compensating for bad equipment, and they are probably right... Here is an example set of clubs... burnsville minnesota, local to me: http://minneapolis.craigslist.org/spo/606570492.html
  4. ebay does have it's disadvantages... in a shop the grips and the extra long clubs would have make me keep looking. I think I am going to have them customized! They have to adjust the lie angle as well as the length right? Tell me more about re-gripping? Can you point me to some tutorials/background on-line? Is there a trick to lining up the little alignment hash with the clubhead? EDIT... I found the re-gripping thread :)! My Woods and Wedges (minus the PW) are good to go... but having the grips all match would be... um... neat. Carpet knife and some elmers glue?
  5. I do want to spend the money on getting the clubs set-up... $120+ Shipping + $100 in adjustments... just seems silly, and I stupidly didn't budget for it, or ask the seller about it... my two sets of Junk shop irons came sized for someone a lot closer. Every on-line club fitting I have done, based on my height and arm length has recommended "Standard" club lengths... so I am a little put off that they came "New" as extra-long clubs... unless they where purchased by a tall person... which seems likely. On the other hand, I have purchased about 3 brand new guitars, all of which required some tweaking and set-up out of the factory box. The questions, can I build a set of irons (I still want to get a replacement 3 Hybrid)... and pay much less than $250? Better than what I have in Wilson Staff Pi5s? I just want to reassure myself that I am not throwing good money after the bad. I like the clubs, but if the extra
  6. The club tech was being nice (realizing I don't have a lot of money to spend), and trying to accommodate my wife who was looking over my shoulder, and who doesn't quite think I should spend any more money on anything golf related ;) Part's aside, can anyone give a generalization how much it costs to get a club assembled? Head, shaft, grip?
  7. I paid $120 for the 3-PW set. Is it fair to say most stock shop club sets are set-up a little long? I understand peoples average hights has been going up... along with the shaft length of clubs. Being the end of wintertime, I went to an indoor "golf dome" and did one session with the clubs. Impossible for me to tell the ball flight in that situation beyond say... the pitching wedge. The lie is set-up for the length of the club... so the ends are pointed up a little bit when I grip them normally. I have an old Wilson Two iron (70's I think ) that's actually looks like the same loft as the 4 iron... and it's shorter!! I think maybe I'm gonna wait for the real ranges to open up and see if the clubs are worth keeping... so far I like them a lot, based on about 100 practice balls over 45 minutes (damn was I sore the next day). It sucks that I'm not going to be able to really measure what the clubs would be like if they where properly set up.
  8. Part B of this question: I have been looking on-line at Golfworks type catalogs of clubheads, shafts, grips... Is there any money to be saved by having some nice Malbey type clubheads TrueTemper shafts, and nice Golf Pride grips assembled. What isn't clear in these catalogs is how much a golf club maker is going to charge per club for putting it together. If it can/does save money on decent clubs... what are the best brands of loose iron heads, and hybrids... I also can't seem to find a good Anser clone blade putter head... preferably with the Scotty Cameron style sound hole.
  9. I just got a new set of Wilson Staff Pi5 irons. I got them off ebay, got a good deal, they are very lightly used, like they where demos, or someone took them to the range a couple of times. I realize these are not forgiving clubs, and they are probably a little beyond my skill (I started two seasons ago). I feel like I am rapidly improving and learning, and I feel like the extra challenge of hitting them square will help me in the long run. I've had them at the range once, and when I did hit them well, they felt really great, and went strait as an arrow. What the clubs are not... set up for someone who is 5' 6" Going through the clubs each one is about 1/2" longer than it should be, some 3/4" Should I put the clubs back on ebay, and get another set that does fit. Or spent $8-10 a club (which I don't have), on getting them cut down and regripped. (I hate the stock grips anyway) I talked to a club-fitter and he said I could choke up... but it might make me really inconsistent? What do you think?
  10. If you post a couple of times, your status gets bumpted to the point you can add a signature! Now I just need to add the icons
  11. I'm a webmaster. Setting up, designing, and custom building CMS systems for web newbies. It beats working! But I need to ramp up the business and billable hours in order to afford those pesky green fees.
  12. Hi and Welcome too! I'm so new, I can't even ask my question yet... it's killing me! It has started to Thaw here in Minneapolis, MN... and it is going to be a long wait for the greens to open! I just got some new equipment... finally with 14 potential clubs in my bag! Nike SQatch Lucky 13 driver (yep, I'm a newbie and got a great deal on it used) Wilson 3 and 5 woods... from a junk shop, pretty beat but not bad, they came with my recently retired Wilson Junk Shop Irons (heavy used, oversized perimeter weighted) The 4 and 8 irons where missing, making the set less useful. Brand New lightly Used Wilson Staff Pi5 Irons 3-PW (very happy after one trip to the golfdome) (3iron is going to get replaced with a Hybrid fast) Adams Sand Wedge Wilson Syncronized Lob Wedge Landlords forgotten Lost&Found; in Basement Jack Nicklaus Putter... I want to replace it with an Anser clone of some sort. You will learn more about my equipment when I can start a thread... I got some serious questions for you all!
  13. Well, replying to this thread a bunch of times should work then! Thanks for the info! that makes sense.
  14. Nope, it's not there. I just registered and confirmed my account... maybe I have to clear my Cache or something. I remember seeing something about it while I was setting up... but I wasn't ready to enter anything. Maybe it was in the Welcome email... which I deleted...
  15. I must be doing something wrong... Signature is missing from my User CP... I remember seeing it at some point, but now I can't find my way back
