  1. That's real nice. You started this with a personal attack and now your feelings are hurt. If "Jodash" was offended by anything I said he can tell me that himself...nobody made you a board mod. But I don't think it's fair to say I have nothing to add to a conversation. And I never once speculated as to what your bag costs. If you think my new sig refers to you specifically, get over yourself. I'm not going to add anything else to this thread, because I don't want to participate in a name-calling session, which is what this is rapidly devolving to become. I'll just say this: I would like for Iacas or one of the other moderators to review this thread and tell me if in their opinion I've said anything out of line. I started out by trying to give Jodash a healthy perspective as to whether he should buy a new set of golf clubs, and I tried to use a little humor in doing it. You jump down my throat for that, and now you're taking everything I say as a personal affront. I'm done here.
  2. However, I don't think you're going to get much feedback about components on this forum. Judging from everyone's signatures, they're all pretty much disciples of the Big Three... Not that there's anything wrong with that, and I'm not looking to start a flame war or anything. But for me club building is a newly discovered hobby and I truly believe most mid-to-high handicap players (such as myself) carry more club than they have game and would be better served by a good quality set of components. As to the better players, you guys can tailor a set to your own exact specs for half what you'd pay for "pro-line" stuff and get just as good quality. Besides which it's a lot of fun to do something yourself and have it work right. Anyway, good luck making your pick. The great thing is, you can order, say, a 5 or 7 iron from each of those sets, put some clubs together and compare them for yourself for not all that much in cash.
  3. cold: I'm not really in the market for a forged blade (or 'semi-blade') iron, but I do love the do-it-yourself thing. Have you checked these out? http://www.golfworks.com/product.asp_Q_pn_E_1005 They look like they have a really nice blade-style topline with the advantages of a cavityback.
  4. Sole: I've walked the Earth for quite awhile, and I wouldn't assume that about ANYBODY. I didn't mean to insult the guy, but his question was NOT "what clubs would you recommend me to buy?". He was asking whether he should buy or not. I think I addressed the question that he actually asked of us, whereas you're basically hawking Taylor Mades.
  5. Oh, yeah...let me add some more wisdom to this discussion. While I truly believe that a guy who practices a lot and swings a set of rusty 20-year-old Tommy Armours will beat a guy who never practices but sports the latest/greatest ultra game improvement gear with engraved portraits of Tiger Woods on diamond-studded platinum weight inserts, it is also true that if you buy yourself those shiny new toys the next thing you'll want to do is go out and play with them. So you might actually find yourself playing and practicing more with a new set of sticks, which are both good things.
  6. jodash: First of all, welcome on board. My wisdom on this subject can be distilled to a single point: what percentage of your current disposable income is represented by the purchase of a new set of golf sticks? If you're kicking through loose piles of cash to get to your bedroom, sure...go get yourself custom fitted for a set of Pings. I would. If, on the other hand, you have it carefully worked out for your wife to eat on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays and you to take Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, then, no, the Pings aren't worth it ( everyone eats on Sundays...) (Ditto if you're planning to buy them on credit, by the way. None of my business, really, but you did ask for opinions) I think if you want a new toy and can afford it, treat yourself. But how much of a difference will new clubs make to your game? Based upon my observations of pretty much all the guys at my local club...none whatsoever. The sad truth is, we get better through practice and taking lessons. That is, through EFFORT. If we could buy the game we want we'd all be playing the PGA Tour.
  7. He's over 40...and being pressed by a bunch of guys half his age. He's a good player and a hard worker, but NOBODY can keep it going forever.
  8. I'm with you, Everardo (you decide whether that's a good thing or not). People are apparently willing to overlook infantile behaviors that I wouldn't tolerate in my three year old grandson as long as the guy wins ballgames. He should have been banned from his sport years ago. I should clarify my remark before iacas reads this: I wasn't able to see the clip because I'm behind a firewall at work; my distaste for Mr. Knight has to do with his on-court 'antics'.
  9. Dude...50 PUTTS??? Uhhh...we're not laughing at you, we're laughing with you? I'm probably the worst putter I personally know, but dang.
  10. I must have missed something...has Ashley been fired?
  11. Raf: I do understand market realities; I just don't like them. I realize the sponsors are simply giving the mob what it wants. I don't actually hate Michelle Wie at all: I hate the mob. If there wasn't fan interest she'd be playing (and winning) the Hawaiian Womens' Amateur, which is where she belongs. And as to her "cuteness" or lack thereof, don't you think she has some sort of weird hairlip kind of thing going on? That detracts a bit from her appeal, at least in my book.
  12. Jeff: The Snake Eyes "Quick Strike II" hybrid heads are 36 bucks at Golfsmith. You can get a decent shaft for around 30-35 bucks, a 2 dollar grip and some epoxy, and have yourself a sweet new hybrid for 75 or 80 dollars total. PLUS the satisfaction of having done it yourself. It's fun...and trust me on this: if I can do it, ANYONE can do it.

    Putt Them Out

Iacas: Sorry about the confusion there...I used to write more concisely and clearly than that, but yeah, only the first sentence was intended to be addressed to you. The rest was in response to 'Wood's' original question.
  14. Raf: No offense taken...I know I'm not going to be playing the Asian Tour alongside golf luminaries like Jeev Milkha and Lee Seung-ho. The thing is, I'm tired enough of the whole Michelle Wie "story" to get downright cranky at people who keep bringing it up. She has virtually no personality or charisma, she hasn't paid her dues (unlike Annika Sorenstam) and therefore does not deserve a sponsor's exemption to play in ANY events. I hate the fact that the decisions to award these exemptions are market driven, which means that IT'S YOUR FAULT that I can't watch golf on T.V. without seeing her freakishly distended torso swinging a club. You sure you want to keep this thread going?
  15. After chopping it around the course today then salvaging a couple of decent holes near the end, I arrived at the last tee box (a 460 yard par 5 with o.b. right and a pond in front of the green) needing par to post up my seventh consecutive sub-90 round (my goals are modest). Pulled my drive down the left side of the fairway about 260, then elected to lay up around the 100 yard mark because of the water short left of the green. I felt cheesy as all getout laying up from 200 yards with a gap wedge, but I was playing by myself and nobody was watching. Hit a really fine 2nd wedge up to the green from just inside the 100 yard disk, leaving around a 12 footer for birdie. It was a pretty tough sidehill putt, so all I wanted to do was lag it up within a 12 inch circle, make my par and post my 89. I hit a very nice, soft putt up to the hole that curled off just at the last second, leaving me right around a foot, slightly uphill and with a right-to-left break, for my par and all the glory that comes with breaking 90. Uhhh...there's always tomorrow. Those of you who think you can't miss a one footer: the reason you think that is because you and your buddies are picking them all up.
