  1. What a treat to watch the ABC replay of Greatest Rounds, from the 1974 US Open! This reminds me of "why" the GC was created in the first place. I felt the most remarkable aspect is the advancement in the modern day optics. The Pros today would cry about that length of rough because they could'nt just get up and whack it. Forrest "Fuzzy" Fezzler, poster boy for the Reverse "C"! Bert Yancey and the "Death Stare" at every hole. He must have had a heckler following him. Although I don't hand them out on a regular basis, Kudos to the GC for actually showing something related to golf. The vomitous Big Break, another Tiger Woods Press Conference, the 2008 US Open were no where to be seen. Instead the viewer was treated to Henry Longhurst, Bill Fleming, Chris Schenkel and a young Jim McKay. This may have been the first Tournament in a while I actually has the sound UP, not in Mute. GC, show more Classics, so that todays golfer can get an appreciation for how difficult the game WAS, as opposed to 460 cc heads and balls that gooooo forever! It is good to gain perspective from time to time.
  2. Congrats to the Aussie for the achievement. Over the years the rankings have been a bit confusing to the public as it concerns the value of certain events and longevity. The networks still attempt to turn every Major or significant World Golf event into a 2 man race, even when the other isn't playing, for fear of losing the fan base of golf. Spoiler alert to NBC and the GC, the golfing public is wiser than you give us credit for and we have moved on, and so should they. "Good on ya Mate'", for your assent to the Top of the heap and may you stay there long enough to enjoy the view!
  3. I had the pleasure of hitting these at a recent club day and what a treat! Wilson is advertising these at $999. If anyone learns of a site where these are being offered at a price alittle more reasonable, please post it here. I started playing with Mac 67 VIP's, so the Wilsons' with the KBS shaft felt like a trip down memory lane. Thanks!
  4. Having taught this difficult game for years at a Resort and Privately, I can say that two of the biggest items that a beginner should learn before he/she walks on a course is: a) Etiquette and b) Distance control. Etiquette, like a good personality can make for an enjoyable round of golf with strangers who have played more, or other beginners' as well. Anyone who doesn't think that golfers pick up habits from other golfers has never taught the game. LOL All of us at one time wanted to putt like Nicklaus, or chip like Watson, spit like Woods. Whatever... Irritating things like walking in someones' lline or taking a swipe at the green after a bad putt only to dislodge a beaver tail of sod, come to mind as lack of etiquette. Distance control comes with hitting range balls and understanding the relationship of loft and distance. Lessons at a beginners stage can be mostly productive, as long as the instruction isn't mind numbing. Good golfers have by practice and repitition learned to eliminate alot of the unnecessary thoughts that creep into a golfer's mind. Any beginner in my humble opinion should spend 1/3 range and 2/3 chipping/putting to better learn the "feel" aspect of golf and not this ridiculous notion of hitting it 350 yds. Any wonder why 90% of the golfing public still can't break 100 even with todays equipment?
  5. TJ, no one would blame you if you have'nt been watching enough golf on t.v. For several years now, the GC and the Networks have filled the telecasts with conjecture, prognostication and second guessing. Graphics are useful, especially when you have MUTE on for an entire broadcast while Jim "Funeral Director" Nantz is blathering on and on about some useless stat. Funny on Saturday when Faldo was aksed what would have happened if he had made the cut? To which Faldo replied; " You'd find a way to weasle your way through the telecast". Ha ha an appropriate response! Personally, I think given the technology and High Def cameras, the golf should tell it's own story. Self serving yappers like Ian Baker Finch, "Rog" Maltbie, Foltz can't get enough of themselves talking right up to the moment of the shot. I don't think anyone cares which way the putt breaks, let's all just watch like the player does to see if he/she guessed right. Duh! Oh the heady days of Chris Schenkel, Jay Randolph and other respectful announcers who revelled at a great shot, versus feeling all good about telling us before it happened. Ok, I'm done. Ha Ha
  6. Agreed! It's not like anyone can go on the internet and find the golfers who are playing in the tournament and who's trending(Tihlmans Fav phrase). I think the GC should reinvent itself with all of the talking heads dressed as gypsies in front of a crystal ball, all with bad teeth and a slight stutter.....just as during the broadcasts with all the second guessing of the way players go about their shot selection and how foolish the players look when they miss a putt. "Well Rog, I don't know why he did that, I mean he should have..." or "Boy Mark, no question he misread that putt, I've been here for 4 hours and he should have figured that out". Thank heavens' the Masters is underway! Now let's go to over to Number # 17 and Gary Bender with the call !
  7. For cryin' out loud GC, what will we do? Boo Hoo, the grounds at Augusta will be drier from the lack of spit, mind you. Would'nt it be refreshing if the GC would just show one of the other 30 some years instead of listening to Kelly Teleprompter whine about how the tournament suffers without Tiger showing up. Who cares? "Live From" and "Morning Drive" have just beat this subject to death. I am sure that Funeral Director Nantz and his "friends" intro will include a 5 minute apology to the world that the Masters will happen, but it's just not the same when CBS can't fill 56 minutes of every hour with Woods spraying it all over the course. Time moves on, the crop of players now are playing consistent and often, not ceremonially. It is also unfortunate that the telecast will be in mute more than not, but until Woods just goes ahead and quits, the hangers-on will ride the train. Hopefully, CBS will report on what they see, not some imaginary result "if only" Woods were there. Most golfers have short memories if they want to play well, too bad the networks can't follow suit. Just sayin'
  8. I think Nobilo put it best during the Bay Hill event. After yet another one of Lerners' mind bending diatribes...."Nobs" explained the graphic by saying; " When you tire of listening to us, you can mute the sound and see the highlighted number and you'll know where the player stands". I think the additional graphic is great, but STOP telling what the graphic reads, just like the other mindless stats that are spat out of the NBC/GC truck. Did you know that Zach Johnson makes par everytime a seagull flies by the lighthouse at Sea Island? Amazing! I dislike the Unprofessional candor tossed amongst the myriad of people that golf producers feel are needed for a broadcast, i.e. "Hey Rog...Gee, I dunno Gare...What hole are we on NO-taah? Remove the on course announcers who second guess and provide nothing but an argumentive opinion. Mute is an option, but should nt be needed.
  9. David in Fla, I appreciate the Welcome! My browser was on the fritz during that first day and the grammar was horrific on my end. I definitely needed a "drop" on that one. Thanks again and I look forward to chiming in!
  10. I just signed up to join the fray and after spending some time at the Valspar Championship last week, I have to say that it is nice to see the other players cutting kevin na a break. They and they alone should be the only ones whose opinion really coounts. What is disturbing is the heckling and drunk fest that some PGA event stops have propagated. The Owls' Nest at the right side of 17 at Innisbrook was much more calm versus last year and the latest incident with Na and bay Hill should shine some light on the abnormalties that come with public attended Tournaments. the PGA Tour should be alittle more concerned with the etiquette of the patrons. Bubba Watson may embrace the chaos, but he is one of one who does so. I met Kevin Na at the Valspar and he came across very cordial and chatty. There are many other golfers out there who get a free pass about their pace of play. K. Bradley comes to mind.
