1. Had a bit of a breakthrough keeping the head steady although I'm still a bit messed up. Here's a few vids to show progress. Still not getting away from a high leaky shot, even when I feel I have made a nice swing. Getting some really strange strikes- high and off the heel being the most common. Very rarely finding middle of club.
2. @nicefellow Thanks man, digging is exactly what I'm doing right now! The swings I was making felt like half swings and didn't really feel right to me. When I was swinging my best I felt like my arms and club were one big pendulum and I could feel when to apply force to the swing to get more power (like pushing a baby on a swing). This felt nothing like that and doesnt feel sustainable to me. I've been chasing that old rhythm for a while so completely understand where you are coming from. I reckon a few flaws have crept in since then though and I'm not setting myself up in good enough positions to deliver the club very well. This is the swing I'm talking about, haha: I appreciate that posture is awful but I haven't hit the ball this well since winter.
3. @mvmac My latest effort. This game has been driving me insane for a few weeks so I took a week off and filmed this. Head seems a lot better but strike is horrendous... Hitting it all over the face, lots of shots high on the face too, which is weird. Don't feel comfortable over any shot and really not enjoying playing at the min. It's a bit of a lottery every time I step up to the ball haha! On this shot I think I picked the ball off the turf on the up, pulled it. Hitting lots of pushes and push fades too with this. 4. @mvmac thanks man, this feels very much like an arm swing to me but I'm not complaining! Went to the range earlier but forgot my damn camera! Ball striking is back for the most part, but my swing feels very soft and slow... Not losing much difference though tbh. Ball flight has actually become noticibly more penetrating already. Direction not the best but I realise there are other flaws which contribute to this. Vid below of my swing at the min (no ball, sorry). I'm very keen to get to single figures by the end of the season and got a lot of time to practice.
5. At his best he would make some crazy swings to get himself around the course, no wonder he got injured. I think this whole meltdown of his could be mostly to do with his loss of flexibility. Still class around the green, but who needs to be flexible to hit a good pitch?
6. I'd prefer to watch golf than pinball :-D
7. I'm all over this as from tomorrow. I practice quite a lot but don't take my time like I know I should. I have shot some of my lowest scores (consecutively) over the past couple of weeks and then out of nowhere everything disappears and after a week or so I then find myself struggling even to make half decent contact with the ball. Because my practice isn't, sorry, WASNT taken with too much thought, would it be likely that I end up just falling back into old habits again? I know a good swing is in there, I just can't seem to get it out for longer than a week!
8. @mvmac is this looking any better? Sorry for bugging you so much ha. I think if I can get this bit sorted I can work my way nicely around it and get my ball striking back. Also just a note: On this pic I don't feel much coil in lower body Thanks for your help.
9. @mvmac does this look any better? Feels horrific! I've had my pro check my grip and seems ok but still struggling with wrist hinge. I think is why it seems such an effort to get the club to the top and look all stretched out. Cheers.
10. @mvmac cool thanks man. Am i right in thinking that this will feel very much like a reverse pivot and very steep compared to where I get to at the minute?
11. I've had a bit of trouble keeping the head still - especially in the backswing, and after watching this vid I noticed that my wrists barely hinge at all until very late in the swing. Could this lead me to over stretch the arms to get to the top, and take the head out of position? I've been shooting some good scores recently though (+7, +8 on my past 2 social rounds) and have had another 2 shots off my handicap so now playing off 12. Still struggling with a bit of a push - was wondering what you lot had to say. edit: better vid of swing: Cheers.
12. I was a bit rushed for time, so I appreciate I hit those balls a bit too quickly!
13. Yeah, sorry haha. Thanks for clearing that up, the mechanics of the golf swing interest me a lot so the more I understand the better for me! I have just been down the range and got some swings. I have tried to get the DTL as good as possible for you although very hard without a cameraman. Still swinging left, although not so many shanks today and contact was good on the most part (I have calmed the head movement down a lot although not perfect yet). My mind has been blown as to how a few weeks ago I was swinging way too much from the inside to now the complete opposite direction! Appreciate the help!
14. Didn't manage to get one today but will hopefully get one tomorrow (uk). Out of interest, what will keeping the head steady Improve in a swing? Not questioning, just interested as I have heard conflicting views on this.
15. Sorry man, should be sorted now.
16. Been practicing hard on my swing this weekend and have managed to find the club face on a few occasions. Had a match earlier and thanks to some good putting and chipping i actually came in on some holes. Not fun with the shanks tho. Everything is a slice/hard pull now. I've worked on keeping head steady which I think has helped strike although I'm getting in a mess somewhere and glancing the ball with every club. heres my swing from range today:
17. OK, mate thanks. Feel in a bit of a mess at the min so will head to range and give this a go.
18. Hi all I seem to have come down with a bout of the SHANKS and no idea what to do... I've had a pretty good start to the season and until a couple of weeks ago I had been hitting the ball much better and my bad shot was a push/hook - I'd tend to get stuck on the downswing. To make things worse I have ordered myself a set of new irons that will be arriving tomorrow and I won't be able to hit them! Here's my swing at the min... although not hitting a ball, I realise I am coming over the top and probably have a little bit of sway. I think this is down to tinkering way too much over the past week though. I had been working on really feeling the club head throughout the swing and had a major lightbulb moment about where the power actually comes from in the swing. Any help would be greatly appreciated as I am on the verge of quitting... :/ Thanks! DTL: Face on:
19. Been doing a lot of work on posture and my release (chronic chicken wing sufferer) and here is my latest effort. I'm using an old rusty bladed 3 iron in this vid and I was ripping the pants off it haha. Any pointers very much welcomed. Thanks. http://www.ubersense.com/video/view/lUlDSpEn?e=1781349#
20. No worries mate, I hope you get sorted soon. I used to get caught up in the whole "start from the ground up" spiel, and it confused the hell out of me. When I changed my perception of the golf swing to one of literally swinging the golf club whilst the ball got in the way I had a major light bulb moment and the change was dramatic and I saw progress extremely quickly. Another thing that may help is to take your golf posture (take a look here: http://thesandtrap.com/t/56069/good-golf-posture-how-to-address-the-golf-ball) and without a golf club, simply let your arms hang straight down in a relaxed position. From here, without thinking about moving your arms, get them swinging backwards and forwards in an arc around your body. Do this for a few mins per day and really feel what part of your body is helping to move the arms. Be sure to keep your arms as relaxed as possible without forcing any kind of movement from them. When you do this you will feel the natural deceleration of the arms towards the top of the swing and the elusive 'drop' that helps you to swing through on a better plane on the downswing. When you feel comfortable with this motion, take a golf club and really feel the weight of it. Now, swing the club with the same feelings of the above drill letting the club get taken by centrifugal force - if you can do this in a mirror you can check the different checkpoints of the swing. You'll probably notice that at waist height, your arms, club and body are perfect, you're on plane at the top and all of a sudden you're in a great position to swing through (again, using the same motion as the above drill) Don't get caught up too much about the sequence of all the different parts of the body moves in the downswing- let the swing happen and FEEL how your body is moving to achieve the results you want. Hope that makes sense. I used to swing similar to you, which is why I think this may help you! Good luck! edit: just to put this into perspective - my 6i club head speed increased by 6mph and driver speed 9+ mph, with what felt very little effort.
21. Just my 2 cents here... I used to be a chronic over-the-topper and could never get the idea of passive arms etc. This video changed the way I looked at the golf swing and has helped me no end. I now have a powerful draw that flies off the club face with what seems like such little effort. I broke 80 for the first time yesterday with this. Take from it what you will, I don't want to step on anyone's toes here as I know theres some great advice on this forum!
22. Thanks man, I'll take a look!
23. Hi all I've had a very productive winter grooving a nice draw and generally feeling very happy with the way I'm swinging the club. I hit 2 of my best ever rounds over the winter - the best being 78 (par 70) that I hit yesterday. My handicap has been cut from 17 to 15 in the annual review so pretty happy with how things are looking. The recurring problem at the moment is off the tee - my backswing looks good and my downswing approaches the ball nicely on an inside path, however at impact the club face on 3 wood and driver is ridiculously open. I've had a look in detail and it looks as if I need to allow the arms to catch up with the body a bit more on the downswing. I'm struggling to do this without adding tension to my arms (something I've tried very hard to get rid of), which creates a horrible strike and no release. Without getting the ball in to play, I am definitely on a bogey train all day, which i'm not a great fan of! Here's a DTL view of my swing with a 3 wood: Any help/tips would be much appreciated! Cheers
24. Now then, just been to the range and seem to be getting some good results shifting my weight - the whole feel of my swing is much smoother, which is a high turning point for me, I was stuck in a rut of trying to smash the ball as hard as I could. Anyway, here's another swing. Shot shape was a lovely little push draw on this swing, however getting a lot of push-fades/slices. Any idea why that might be? I know i have a small chicken wing on the way through and really struggling to shake it off so any help on that would be much appreciated. Push draw 6i - Cheers
25. I'm working on actually swinging the club. I've never been able to get out of the mind set of 'grip it and rip it' no matter how hard I have tried in the past haha. Recently after playing 9 holes with a friend of mine who is a very good golfer I realised how effortless he gets power in his swing. The feeling of throwing the club up and effortlessly swinging it back to the ball has been providing some amazing results, I've never hit a ball so well in my life. Such a powerful piercing ball flight regardless of shape whilst also gaining some serious distance. I've always had an upper body swing and all swing thoughts have been in my arms, my swing thoughts are now only based upon using my body to do the work (aside from keeping backswing on plane) - the club seems to drop into the 'slot' so effortlessly and I now understand how the body actually stores energy to create momentum to the club head. I'm looking forward to drilling this in over the winter and play some good golf next summer (for a change!).
